Chapter 210: Chapter 208
The sky was clear and bright today, and everything looked as if it had been reborn. Yesterday's heavy rain brought new life to the world.
"Splash, splash..."
The water of the Whispering River continuously slapped against the dock.
Ryan, dressed in the leather armor of the Deputy Chief of the Patrol guard, with a sword strapped to his waist, stood in front of three parked carriages. His eyes anxiously looked downstream along the Whispering River. Today was the day his fiancée, Liza, was supposed to arrive.
"Why haven't they arrived yet? They should have been here by now, right? Could it be that Baron Omar isn't willing to let Liza and her family leave?" Ryan paced back and forth anxiously, wishing he could see Liza and her family immediately.
"Sir Ryan, no boats have arrived at the dock today. Please don't worry too much." Andrew said softly. He had been pulled out of bed by Ryan as early as seven this morning to accompany him.
Andrew held the rank of squad leader in the Patrol guard bureau. Due to his outstanding performance, Ryan had appointed him to that position.
Ryan had spent all of last night reviewing the documents given to him by Lucas, including the test papers of twenty-five individuals. After reading them, Ryan understood the type of people Lucas was looking for, which aligned with his own views. As a result, the top scorers were appointed as squad leaders.
The twenty-five individuals were divided into five squads, with five people per squad and one leader for each. Their daily task was to patrol Sedona City and maintain public order.
As for guarding the city gates, that was still the responsibility of the army, as the Patrol guard Bureau was still understaffed.
"Really?" Ryan sighed. It had been over twenty days since he last saw his family, and his beloved Liza. No wonder he was so anxious.
After staying in Sedona City for a few days, and upon Bryan's persuasion, Ryan had written a letter home, inviting both families to relocate to Sedona City. He had already made up his mind—if things didn't work out, he would find a job as a teacher at the local school, which was still better than being a clerk in Lockwood City.
In truth, he was uncertain whether his family and Liza's family would heed his suggestion and move to Sedona City. Having never experienced the wonders of this place, they might simply dismiss his words as exaggerations or attempts to deceive them.
"The boat's here, Sir Ryan. It's coming." Andrew, with his sharp eyes, spotted a vague silhouette of a ship downstream along the Whispering River.
"Really?" Ryan craned his neck, eyes lighting up with joy as he watched the boats slowly come into focus on the river. His heart raced, wondering if his family was on one of those boats.
Twenty minutes later, the boats docked at the pier. A total of twelve ships had arrived, and Ryan scanned the crowd anxiously, searching for familiar faces among the passengers.
"Ryan, you idiot, what are you looking at?"
A choked voice suddenly rang out beside him, causing Ryan to freeze. Slowly turning his head, he saw his fiancée standing quietly not far away.
"I..." Ryan was at a loss for words. Everything he had planned to say was now stuck in his throat, and not a single word could come out.
"You what? Gone from home for over twenty days, and now we have to come find you." Liza shouted, glaring at him. Gone was her usual gentleness. Her slightly chubby face was full of frustration, and it was clear she was angry. After all, which bridegroom misses his own wedding without getting a good 'cut' with a blade for it?
"I..." Ryan lowered his head in shame. He really had failed this time. Not only had Baron Omar schemed against him, but he had also been so caught up with Sedona City that he stayed behind.
"Pfft."
Suddenly, a... uh, pleasantly figure leapt into Ryan's arms. Liza's soft voice followed, "Do you know how worried everyone was about you?"
Ryan held his fiancée, her embrace full of warmth, and looked over to see his family and Liza's family unloading their belongings in the distance. They had all come.
"Honestly, I'm sorry." Ryan's lips curled into a slight smile, his eyes moistening. His family's trust stirred deep emotions within him, bringing him close to tears.
"Idiot, you're the pride of Lockwood City." Liza said softly, shaking her head slightly. "And besides, we're curious about this Sedona City you mentioned in your letters."
"You all believe me?" Ryan asked, a bit stunned.
"My son, what nonsense are you talking about? If we can't even trust our own family, then what kind of fake world are we living in?" Ryan's old father was lugging a large wooden chest, followed by several servants, all carrying boxes behind him.
"Exactly. If I'm willing to give you my daughter, do you really think we wouldn't believe you?" Liza's father said with a smile. However, the next moment, his expression darkened as he shouted, "We'll settle the score later. You made Liza cry for twenty days, and you still owe her a wedding."
"Yes. I will make it up to her." Ryan, holding Liza's hand—nearly as big as his own—replied solemnly, "In a few days, I'll hold the wedding ceremony again."
"Hahaha... excellent." Liza's father burst out laughing, letting go of all past complaints.
"Come on, everyone, follow me home." Ryan shouted, his face beaming with joy. This was likely the happiest day he had experienced in the past two years.
"Home?" Liza paused for a moment, recalling that in the letter Ryan had sent her, he mentioned that he was renting a place.
"Yes, I bought a house," Ryan boasted, a bit childishly. "I'm now the Deputy Chief of the Patrol guard in Sedona City, and Lord Lucas gave me a 50% discount on the house price. It's a huge deal."
Indeed, Sedona City's public servants enjoy great benefits. For someone like Ryan, at the rank of Deputy Chief, he could buy his first house at a 50% discount. Of course, this only applied to the first property. For someone like Andrew, who was a squad leader, the discount was 30%. Since the Patrol guard bureau didn't provide housing, all 25 members were renting homes, except for those who could return to their own families. Apart from night shifts, everyone considered being able to return home to sleep the most wonderful thing. Plus, the pay was slightly higher than serving in the military.
"Deputy Chief? What kind of position is that?" Ryan's father frowned. In the letters he had received, it seemed like his son was struggling, even being schemed against by that scoundrel, Baron Omar.
"Well, it's quite a high-ranking position. I'm responsible for the public security of all of Sedona City." Ryan explained in simple terms.
"Wow. That's even better than being a knight in Lockwood City. You're in charge of the safety of an entire city?" Both families gasped in surprise.
"It's alright, really. It's all thanks to Lord Lucas trusting me." Ryan responded, a confident smile lighting up his face. The charisma he once had as a knight was back in full force.
"Hurry. I'm so curious about this Sedona City you've been talking about." Liza urged eagerly.
