Chapter 209: Chapter 207
"You should go change your clothes too." Lucas said to Ryan, noticing him shivering. He didn't want the future deputy head of the security office to fall ill before even starting his work.
"Yes, city lord." Ryan saluted and quickly jogged towards the storage room.
The security office was divided into three main sections: the front courtyard, the middle courtyard, and the back courtyard.
The front courtyard was the reception and office area.
The middle courtyard was for training, interrogation of prisoners, storage of weapons and supplies, and also housed a dining hall.
The back courtyard contained rows of prison cells and small dark rooms, used for temporarily holding prisoners.
Ryan and the others went to change clothes in the storage room of the middle courtyard, which also served as the weapon storage area.
As soon as Ryan entered the warehouse, he was stunned. In front of him were rows of bare-chested men, all with well-defined muscles—those small, noticeable muscles that were hard to miss.
Ryan's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. It was humiliating to realize that despite his former status as a knight, his physical condition was now worse than that of a group of militia men. He recalled that since Baron Omar had arrived in the city over a year ago, he had neglected his physical training.
With a sigh of resignation, Ryan scanned the storage room and noticed the rows of iron cabinets, which resembled large wardrobes. Everyone was changing clothes in front of these cabinets.
He approached one of the cabinets, opened the door, and saw a neatly arranged set of leather armor and a single-handed sword. At the top of the stack was a piece of paper.
"What does it say?" Ryan unfolded the paper and read it, growing more surprised as he went along. "It's the leather armor and weapon management regulations?"
The note read,
- Each person is provided with four sets of clothes (including winter wear). Damage due to official duties will be compensated; personal damage will require payment. Clothes do not need to be worn after working hours.
- Each person is assigned one set of leather armor. Must be worn during missions and patrols.
Ryan continued reading the note,
- Each person is issued a sword, which must not be lost. If it is lost, expect to be sent to the dungeon.
- Each person is given a guard token, which represents the face of the guard corps. If it is lost, expect to be sent to the dungeon as well.
"..."
"Wow, this is strict. Even the Royal Knights might not have such stringent rules." Ryan muttered to himself.
He examined the guard token, which was the size of a baby's hand and made of some crude metal. It featured an embossed design with the words "Guard Token" and a four-legged strange creature encircling the text. The back of the token had three unusual symbols he couldn't decipher.
"This token must be worth several silver coins in the capital city. No wonder losing it means being sent to the dungeon."
Ryan finished examining the token and picked up the sword that was upright in the cabinet. It was of average weight, slightly lighter than his single-handed knight's sword.
"This is called a Gunto sword? What an unusual name."
"Clang."
The sword was drawn, gleaming with a white light. Ryan was stunned as he looked at the single-edged blade, which was clearly made of fine steel. This sword alone could sell for a gold coin, if not more.
"If I lost this, I'd probably end up in the dungeon for life." Ryan thought, unable to imagine the consequences. The equipment before him was already comparable to, if not superior to, a full set of knightly armor in terms of money.
"But why did the Lord summon me?"
Suddenly, Ryan froze with a realization, was the Lord planning to recruit him as a knight?
"Could it be?" Ryan hesitated to believe it. He was currently in a sorry state, relying on Bryan for support, occasionally doing odd jobs. Recently, he had even borrowed some silver coins from Bryan to buy a house.
Ryan's heart raced with excitement. Could this be his chance for a fresh start? Was his dedication to the path of knighthood finally being recognized?
With this thought, Ryan quickly pulled on his new uniform, donned the leather armor, stuffed the badge into his pocket, and grabbed the sword before sprinting out of the warehouse.
When Ryan arrived at the front hall, he saw he was the last one to show up. He hurriedly joined the lineup, standing in line with the others.
Lucas gazed sternly at the twenty-six patrol officers before him, his expression serious. He scanned each face and spoke in a deep voice, "From today on, you are all patrol officers. The security of Sedona City and the safety of the civilians rely on your vigilance and dedication."
"Understood."
Except for Ryan, everyone shouted in unison, which left him momentarily stunned.
"Very well, I hope you won't disappoint me." Lucas said with satisfaction, nodding approvingly. After military training, the patrol officers exuded an impressive aura.
His substantial investment in the patrol officers was paying off. The leather armor they wore had been specifically designed for the patrol officers, offering flexibility and comfort.
In addition to the armor, the warehouse in the central courtyard also contained shields and small crossbows, meant to handle potential riots in Sedona City.
"Go and familiarize yourselves with the working environment. You will officially start your duties tomorrow." Lucas said, waving his hand to dismiss the group. The rules and regulations would be covered by Max later on.
As everyone dispersed, Ryan remained standing in place, looking dazed. Lucas raised an eyebrow, wondering if there was something wrong with the man's head.
"City Lord, you called for me?" Ryan quickly saluted and said, "I used to be a knight and am willing to serve you."
"Oh?" Lucas took a couple of steps forward, coming up to Ryan. He lightly poked Ryan's chest with his index finger and said calmly, "I don't care what you were before—whether a knight, a scholar, or a commoner. What I need now is your future."
"My future?" Ryan looked momentarily stunned but quickly understood, his face lighting up with excitement as he exclaimed, "Yes. My future is granted by the City Lord."
"Not too dim-witted." Lucas chuckled softly and turned to walk in a certain direction. "Come with me."
"Yes, sir." Ryan quickly followed.
Lucas led Ryan into an office and took his seat at the main desk. Mina and Ayesha stood beside him, while Ryan stood attentively on the opposite side.
"This room will be your office from now on," Lucas said, pulling several documents and a token from a drawer and placing them on the desk. "You need to keep these things secure and review them carefully. The token here is yours."
"Yes, sir." Ryan nodded respectfully.
"The leather armor and clothes that belong to you are also in this room," Lucas continued. "Make sure to clean the set you're wearing and return it to the warehouse."
Lucas was referring to the standard equipment for the deputy chief. While Ryan might not necessarily be sent out for patrols or arrests, it was important to distinguish him from the regular patrol officers. Sometimes, having the right equipment also represented status and professionalism.
Ayesha's leather armor was unique, as it was brought from Earth by Lucas. For positions like the chief patrol officer, there was also a dedicated office.
Ordinary team leaders and patrol officers, on the other hand, worked in the main office area of the hall, although most of their duties involved going out on patrols.
