Chapter 96: Chapter 96: I Don’t Mess Around When It Comes to Lightning
Inside the palace, Enel stared at the four new corpses on the ground without a flicker of emotion in his eyes.
He raised his hand and released a bolt of lightning. In an instant, the bodies turned into charred husks, the stench of scorched flesh filling the great hall.
"Nice technique… but the smell could use some work."
A mocking voice echoed through the hall. Enel looked toward the entrance and saw Kaito standing there, hands in his pockets.
"Blue Sea dweller, I'll admit you've got some skills. But if you think that's enough to challenge a god…" Enel's voice dropped coldly. "Then all I can say is, you're in for a rude awakening."
Kaito couldn't help but chuckle as Enel still referred to himself as a god. When he looked at him again, his eyes had turned cold.
"In front of these eyes… no one has the right to call themselves a god."
Enel felt a strange discomfort from Kaito's gaze—as if that was what it truly meant to look down on all creation like a god.
Those eyes… they radiated something truly divine.
And that, Enel could not tolerate.
"Die, blasphemer!"
His arm transformed into pure lightning and lashed upward toward the ceiling.
Kaito didn't move an inch. A deep violet energy surged up around him, and a ribcage-like structure wrapped protectively around his body.
The lightning struck him with a loud crackle, but aside from charring the floor beneath his feet, it didn't leave so much as a scratch.
Unfazed, Enel examined the glowing skeletal armor around Kaito and commented with forced calm,
"So that's your little trick to block divine punishment. Not bad."
"Maybe."
Kaito dismissed the Susanoo and raised one arm, a grin spreading across his face.
"You're good with lightning, aren't you?"
Enel's eyebrow twitched. As someone who viewed himself as the god of thunder, Kaito's words were outright provocation.
He struck the massive drum on his back. With a thunderous crack, a giant bird made of lightning burst forth.
"Thirty Million Volts!"
Enel looked at Kaito smugly. Compared to that earlier attack, this was a whole different level.
He was confident this would reduce that arrogant Blue Sea dweller to a pile of charcoal.
But the next moment made his eyes bulge—and even snot trickled from his nose.
Kaito's raised hand crackled with lightning, accompanied by a shrill chirping sound. As a user of the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, Enel could instantly sense just how potent the lightning wrapped around Kaito's arm was.
But... he was the one with the Rumble-Rumble Fruit! Why could this guy also wield lightning?
Enel's brain felt like it had hit a wall. Small head, big confusion.
Kaito looked at his own arm, his expression tinged with nostalgia.
Back in the Shinobi World, drawing on his memories from Earth, he'd been the first to develop the Chidori—even beating Kakashi to it.
With that technique, he'd slain countless powerful foes. But since arriving in the One Piece world, he hadn't used it once.
Fingers pressed together, Kaito pointed his palm at Enel and smiled.
"Come on, let's see which is stronger—your thunderbird or my Chidori."
"Don't get cocky! I'm the true God of Thunder!!!"
Enel roared in fury. With a fierce swing of his arm, the massive thunderbird screeched and dived at Kaito with incredible speed.
But with his current level of ocular power, Kaito easily tracked the bird's every move. As the creature lunged, Kaito struck out with his Chidori.
Lightning clashed with lightning. The explosive crackle rang through the palace.
Moments later, a pitiful screech echoed out. Enel's attack dissolved into static and vanished into the air. The only sound left was the sharper, higher-pitched chirping of the Chidori—like a victory cry.
Enel stared at the now-brighter glow on Kaito's hand, his face twitching with shame and disbelief.
If Kaito had beaten his attack with some other move, he might've accepted it.
But with lightning? His specialty?
That was just a slap in the face.
Kaito dispelled the Chidori with a flick of his hand and tilted his head curiously.
"What's the matter? Isn't our God of Thunder supposed to be better at using lightning than me?"
"Damn you… you're just a mortal!"
Crackling with electricity, Enel vanished in a burst of lightning and reappeared in the center of the hall.
He spread his arms and bellowed,
"Discharge!"
Zzzzzz! Blinding arcs of lightning erupted from his body, engulfing the entire hall.
Kaito spread his arms as well and spoke softly,
"Chidori Stream."
The piercing chirp rang out once again. Lightning surged around Kaito, dense and wild, crashing into Enel's storm.
The instant the two currents met, Enel's lightning was completely devoured. In the blink of an eye, the Chidori Stream surged toward Enel himself.
Enel sneered. Even if this round looked like another loss, he was lightning—how could lightning hurt him?
But then—
Zzzzzz!
"AAAAAGGHHHH!!!"
The moment the Chidori Stream touched him, Enel's body convulsed violently. Agonized screams echoed through the palace. His body flickered erratically, as if enduring intense electroshock therapy.
After a while, Enel—now covered in scorched patches and pale from head to toe—rolled his eyes back. A wisp of black smoke escaped his mouth as he collapsed with a thud.
Kaito lowered his arms and began walking slowly toward Enel, faint sparks still crackling over his body.
Halfway there, Enel's body suddenly sparked again. His lips moved weakly:
"...Electro...shock..."
Thump-thump. His heart, nearly stopped by the blast, began beating again under the stimulation. A flush of color returned to his face.
He slowly pushed himself up, glaring at Kaito.
"Why… why can lightning hurt me? I am the God of Thunder!"
"Heh. Maybe you just ate a fake Rumble-Rumble Fruit."
"A… fake Rumble-Rumble Fruit?!"
Enel froze. Normally, if someone said that to him, he'd've zapped them on the spot.
But after that "shock therapy" earlier… he was starting to have doubts.
Seeing Enel's shaken expression, Kaito couldn't help but laugh.
Of course the Rumble-Rumble Fruit he ate was real. The reason the Chidori Stream could hurt him was because it was chakra-based lightning—with its own unique energy properties.
Just like how Haki can hurt Logia users, chakra—when strong enough—can do the same.
People in the One Piece world had no concept of chakra.
Which made tricking Enel with it all the more entertaining.
