Chapter 20: Chapter 20: The Dispute
(T/N: There's a whole chapter about food in Chinese style, so if you hate it, skip it and I wanted to say that if you don't like cooking, but you see cooking in the text, just skip some parts of the chapter, you don't have to read something you don't like.)
Noon—lunchtime.
Renya had brought a bento in advance and didn't go home for lunch.
There were quite a few people like him...
Training was already exhausting—who still had the energy to go home and eat?
"Renya-kun, what's this?"
Nara Motoha was completely fixated on the glossy, plump braised meatball inside Renya's bento.
The surface of the braised meatball was coated in a tempting sauce, and just looking at it could make anyone's appetite soar.
Nara Motoha unconsciously swallowed, staring longingly at the meatball.
Renya saw this and immediately knew what this guy was thinking.
"I'll let you try one."
"Really? Thanks, Renya-kun!" Nara Motoha was overjoyed. He took the braised meatball Renya handed over and ate it with a rice ball.
The soft, tender braised meatball, the fragrant sauce, and the ordinary rice ball collided on his tongue. Nara Motoha's cheeks puffed out with delight, and he squinted in satisfaction, mumbling,
"So delicious! I love it!"
Clearly, he was a foodie.
He didn't have many other hobbies—just loved good food and sleeping.
Renya gave a faint smile. "I'm glad you like it."
Having someone genuinely appreciate his cooking made him quite happy.
Their little scene caught the attention of the people around them.
Everyone's gaze simultaneously fell on the braised meatball.
Looking at the enticing braised meatball, then down at their own bland bentos, they instantly lost interest in their own meals.
"Danzo, I want some!" Sarutobi Hiruzen looked at his friend.
They were the closest to Renya and could clearly smell the aroma wafting from the braised meatball.
"Hiruzen, have you no dignity?" Shimura Danzo scolded with a scowl, but his gulping Adam's apple betrayed him.
Truthfully, he wanted to eat too, but couldn't bring himself to do something so embarrassing.
Especially after the previous conflict he had with Uchiha Renya.
If he ran over like an eager puppy, how would the others see him?
Unless he didn't want to survive in Konoha anymore.
Sarutobi Hiruzen watched as Renya kept putting braised meatballs into his mouth. The delicious meatballs were disappearing fast—he knew he couldn't just sit there any longer.
He stepped toward Renya.
Seeing this, Shimura Danzo panicked. "Hiruzen, what are you doing? Get back here!"
But Sarutobi Hiruzen ignored his friend's cry.
Right now, he just wanted to taste the braised meatball.
"Damn, that guy gave in to temptation!" Shimura Danzo's face darkened as he watched silently.
He hadn't expected Hiruzen to be conquered by mere food. How embarrassing.
"Renya-kun, try my tempura!" Sarutobi Hiruzen said cheerfully, handing over his bento.
Renya was surprised by Hiruzen's move but quickly noticed that his gaze was fixed on the last lbraised meatball.
He immediately understood—he was eyeing the meatball.
"Hiruzen, thank you."
Renya picked up a piece of tempura and put it in his mouth.
The taste was decent. After so many braised meatballs, it was a nice change of flavor.
Seeing Renya eat it, Sarutobi Hiruzen smiled.
"Renya-kun, what is this?"
He pointed at the braised meatball, looking curious.
"This is a braised braised meatball I made. Not bad, right? Want to try one?" Renya asked.
"Can I?"
"Of course."
With Renya's permission, Sarutobi Hiruzen quickly picked up the braised meatball and placed it into his own bento.
"Renya-kun, thanks so much for sharing your food."
After expressing his thanks, Sarutobi Hiruzen turned and jogged back to his friend.
"Danzo, look!" Sarutobi Hiruzen waved the braised meatball in front of Danzo's face, his eyes filled with unrestrained smugness.
Shimura Danzo pretended to be napping, but slowly opened his eyes at the sound.
Feigning curiosity, he asked, "What's that?"
"Hehe, Renya-kun said it's called a braised meatball," Sarutobi Hiruzen replied happily.
"Let me see." Shimura Danzo leaned closer to the braised meatball.
At this moment, Sarutobi Hiruzen was still unaware of the looming danger, and kept on talking about how he got the last braised meatball.
Shimura Danzo looked at the braised meatball just inches away and smiled slyly.
"Hiruzen, you're too naïve!"
With that, he suddenly opened his mouth wide.
Sarutobi Hiruzen was startled and tried to pull back, but it was too late...
Danzo had already shoved the braised meatball into his mouth.
Sarutobi Hiruzen stared in shock, eyes wide, still holding the pose of offering the meatball. His face was filled with disbelief. It took him several seconds to react before yelling in fury:
"Danzo, you beast!"
And Shimura Danzo? His cheeks puffed out as he chewed, speaking with a full mouth,
"Tastes great, actually!"
Seeing this, Sarutobi Hiruzen's eyes bulged with rage and turned bloodshot.
If he were from the Uchiha clan, his Sharingan would've awakened right there.
"Danzo, you bastard!"
That braised meatball was hard-earned!
Danzo had gone too far!
...
Renya had just finished eating and was lazily leaning against a tree, preparing to enjoy a nice nap.
Suddenly, he heard a noisy commotion nearby.
"What's going on?"
With a puzzled look, Renya followed the noise—and was stunned.
He saw Sarutobi Hiruzen and Shimura Danzo wrestling with each other.
Renya: "???"
Weren't those two best buddies?
Why were they fighting?
"Danzo, give me back my braised meatball!"
"What? You're really hitting me?!"
Hearing their argument, Renya finally understood and was a bit speechless.
Who would've thought a braised meatball could cause this much trouble?
"Danzo really is something else..."
No wonder he became the 'Shadow'—he'd been showing his dark side since childhood, scheming even against his closest friend.
"Stop fighting, you two!"
One of the students tried to intervene, but the two were so fired up they accidentally beat him up too.
Seeing this, the rest immediately gave up on trying to break it up.
From that day on, Class A developed an unspoken rule—never try to break up a fight.
...
The commotion soon drew the attention of Senju Takuzen.
"All of you, stop this at once!"
At the sound of the homeroom teacher's voice, the bruised duo instantly froze.
Senju Takuzen's face darkened.
"Who gave you permission to fight?"
The two lowered their heads and said nothing.
They knew their teacher was angry now—it was best to stay silent...
Seeing their silence, Senju Takuzen swept his eyes across the crowd and sneered:
"Since you all love fighting so much, we'll have live combat training this afternoon. Knock yourselves out!"
Renya: "..."
Everyone in Class A: "..."
They hadn't expected that just watching the fight would get them caught in the crossfire.
At once, everyone turned to glare resentfully at the two culprits.
It was clear that Shimura Danzo and Sarutobi Hiruzen had earned everyone's wrath.
"This is your fault!" Shimura Danzo muttered.
"If you hadn't stolen my braised meatball, would I have hit you?!" Sarutobi Hiruzen was nearly fuming with rage.
That bastard Danzo even dared to shift the blame!
Sarutobi Hiruzen clenched his fists, making up his mind:
During this afternoon's combat training, he was going to beat Danzo to a pulp!
