Chapter 160: Chapter 160: Coincidence?
"Who is this guy…?"
Through the purple stone linking him to the giant Tenseigan, Ōtsutsuki Toneri watched Izayoi, whose entire body was enveloped by a greenish-blue aura, outwardly calm but inwardly reeling.
Such a huge chakra amount—at least a hundred times greater than his own. He instantly wiped out Toneri's puppet corps with that tornado and even absorbed the purple beam. This man's strength stood far above his.
Could it be that someone had located and broken the seal on the space-time portal linking the moon and the earth…? Or was he actually some ninja from the earth who flew to the moon?
Suddenly, Toneri spotted the two horns on Izayoi's head, and he muttered, "Like the ancestor, he has horns… Could he be a descendant of the Sage of Six Paths?"
At that, Toneri promptly poured large amounts of chakra into the purple stone, trying to open the barrier around the artificial sun so he could use gravity to pull in meteorites from outer space.
Unfortunately, at his current level, he was simply too weak. He didn't have sufficient chakra to tap fully into the giant Tenseigan's might. He couldn't even use it to surveil the world. In Izayoi's eyes, he was basically a severely weakened Kaguya—someone Izayoi could neutralize instantly.
Indeed, Izayoi managed it in a single move, letting Toneri learn firsthand the power of "strategy":
Izayoi clapped his hands, forming one of his Chakra Orbs, which morphed into a metallic object inscribed with the Flying Thunder God markings. Next, that metal object—and Izayoi himself—vanished.
Seeing Izayoi disappear, Toneri tried using the giant Tenseigan's x-ray vision to locate Izayoi's chakra signature. A second later, cold sweat beaded on his forehead. Izayoi's chakra was right behind him.
Before Toneri could respond, a palm landed on his back; a green beam passed through his body. Toneri collapsed to his knees, then pitched forward to the floor. The floating purple stone, likewise, lost its supply of chakra, went dim, and dropped with a clatter.
…
At the same time, somewhere underground beneath a lake on Earth…
A sudden burst of dazzling green light flared, instantly drawing the attention of White Zetsu clones scattered all around the ninja world—those that lurked in various places unsealed or poorly guarded. Soon, Black Zetsu got word of it, and before long arrived with a Wood Clone of Uchiha Madara in tow.
"Huh, a lake-within-a-lake? Our ninja world sure has some odd spots," Madara's Wood Clone remarked, scanning the green lake at the bottom of the cavern. He turned to Black Zetsu. "How'd you find this place?"
Black Zetsu answered, "It wasn't here before, Lord Madara. Our White Zetsu clones had passed through many times—just looked like an underwater cave. We paid no special attention. Then suddenly this area erupted with that strange chakra; the White Zetsu came to check and discovered this green lake. That chakra must have triggered some unsealing."
"Been inside?" Madara pressed.
"We sent White Zetsu in. It's a space-time portal," replied White Zetsu, wearing a peculiar expression.
He wasn't alone; Black Zetsu and Madara's Wood Clone also felt uneasy.
"A portal, so soon…? Coincidence, or sabotage?" Madara mused, intrigued. "We scoured so many sites without luck. Not even the Rinnegan could see the seal's chakra. Now it opens on its own… Could they be prepared for me?"
"Do we go in, Lord Madara?" Black Zetsu asked nervously.
He had spent a thousand years trying to find that lunar path. Even with White Zetsu's vast net plus Madara's Wood Clone scanning for the seal's chakra, they'd found nothing. Now it had abruptly appeared. How bizarre, and he couldn't believe Toneri—if that's who was behind it—would kindly invite them. He surely planned a trap.
"Since the enemy graciously invites me, how can I refuse?" Madara's Wood Clone chuckled, forming a single-handed seal. "But I'll send in a pawn first—scout out their tricks."
"Ninja Art: Edo Tensei!"
As he finished, a coffin rose from the earth. With a thump, its lid slid free, and out stepped the Second Tsuchikage. His form then twisted and vanished into invisibility.
"Mu"—the silent technique of the Tsuchikage—allowed him to completely erase his chakra presence. Combined with Earth Style: Light-Weight Rock Technique to fly, plus Dust Release that disintegrates matter to dust, he was among those "Kage at their peak."
Under Madara's control, the invisible Mu slipped into the portal. Madara's clone tapped into the Tsuchikage's field of view, exploring this route apparently left by Hamura. Because it was just a Wood Clone, plus one made from Black Zetsu controlling Madara's chakra, Izayoi had no direct awareness of it. At this moment, Izayoi was still deciding how to handle Toneri.
Killing him would be wasteful, especially as Toneri had grown not insignificantly since they last crossed paths. He lacked Byakugan from birth, so he never had that [Byakugan (Purple)] bloodline entry. Early on, he hadn't even begun training, only having, in Izayoi's eyes, a single bubble indicating a "senior high-level" potential plus the [Ōtsutsuki Bloodline (Red)], which Izayoi had extracted. Now, more than a decade later, Toneri had unlocked three purple-tier entries: [Chakra Control (Purple)], [Kage-Level Aptitude (Purple)], and [Puppet Master (Purple)]. Had he possessed eyes—and begun training earlier—he might have reached a gold-tier entry by now.
Killing someone who has a red-tier future is definitely an egregious waste. Moreover, Toneri's reversion to the ancestor's features gave Izayoi a bold idea.
Hence Izayoi formed a Wood Clone, who picked up Toneri's limp body and flew him back to Earth. Meanwhile, Izayoi's real self picked up the purple stone to seize control of the giant Tenseigan. He didn't immediately try analyzing how this artificial Tenseigan—formed by fusing countless Byakugan—compared with his own organically evolved "ultimate eye." He set that aside and flew straight to the Ōtsutsuki clan's library.
Like the Hyūga clan's archives, it was packed with books and scrolls. Izayoi didn't rummage through them individually. Instead, he sent real-time instructions to his Wood Clone, having it use the Mind Sphere to access Toneri's memory, searching for the clan's thousand-year inheritance. If Toneri had studied the library thoroughly, then everything might be in his mind; if he hadn't, Izayoi would have to bag it all anyway.
Sure enough, the Wood Clone soon signaled that there was good news. Digesting that info, Izayoi came over to a particular shelf and retrieved a mundane-looking scroll—weathered and sealed. Creating a bright-green orb from a Chakra Orb to illuminate the dim library, Izayoi gingerly unrolled it, then cursed, "Damn it!"
The scroll brimmed with writing—an archaic script that looked like gibberish. Obviously, this was personally left by Hamura a thousand years ago. A big find, but it also felt like discovering the chest but lacking the code.
Ten times more reason not to kill Toneri. Otherwise, he might have to rely on digging up the clan's corpses for Edo Tensei. Izayoi was reluctant, worried about encountering Hamura's soul. If the younger brother was anything like Hagoromo, even after death, he might still hold an unstoppable power like the Truth-Seeking Orbs.
So instead, Izayoi used his Chakra Orbs to craft a giant storage scroll. The synergy of Chakra Orbs and Yin–Yang Release let him insert multiple elemental transformations or create unknown qualities.
With [Skysway (Red)], plus the inherent space-time talent of the pure-blooded Ōtsutsuki, the large scroll was easy to conjure. After fully collecting the clan's thousand-year legacy, Izayoi dispatched another Wood Clone to carry it back to Earth. Then the real Izayoi headed into a shrine, floating before the giant Tenseigan.
That huge Tenseigan was entirely gold, the sclera golden, the pupil more of a yellowish circle. Similar but not identical to Izayoi's Tenseigan, it had a flower-like pattern that glowed bright amber. Around it were many columns engraved with a sealing formula. Only a true Ōtsutsuki could touch it; even possessing the "medium" of that purple stone wouldn't let your chakra bond with the Tenseigan if you lacked clan blood.
But that barrier didn't impede Izayoi in the slightest. His chakra easily connected, giving him free rein over the giant Tenseigan's power.
"What insane ocular prowess," Izayoi murmured. "What kind of jutsu can fuse a massive quantity of Byakugan into such a miracle? Must be Yin–Yang Release as well."
The giant Tenseigan lacked the Chakra Orb ability or Tenseigan Chakra Mode. But using that purple stone, one could produce destructive purple beams.
Indeed, the "branch family" had used that to annihilate the "main family." Except for lacking Chakra Mode and Chakra Orbs, the giant Tenseigan matched all other Tenseigan abilities. One core function was super-boosted: gravity. With sufficient chakra, it could even pull the entire moon to crash into Earth—plenty for world destruction.
"That's good to know…"
Izayoi clutched the purple stone and pressed a hand lightly to his own eyes, whispering, "Even now, I can't move the moon with my own Tenseigan. So my power still has much room to grow."
He tested out the Tenseigan's extended abilities: e.g., super farsight or x-ray. Originally, the clan used the giant Tenseigan to observe all corners of the ninja world. Izayoi wanted to compare it with his own Tenseigan. After only a moment, though, he severed the connection, muttering, "This chakra cost is absurd. No wonder Toneri never spied on the world—tools are tools."
Using the giant Tenseigan for global surveillance required the user's own chakra. This might be feasible for a short while if you had enough chakra, but you couldn't keep it up. Izayoi realized this was why Toneri never surveilled them. Lacking the stamina to run it for long, Toneri was basically a mid-tier.
He concluded that forging a Tenseigan from so many eyes was still a "ninja tool," far from the completeness of his own. It might have only one advantage: dragging the entire moon.
Meanwhile, Izayoi's personal Tenseigan was more comprehensive overall.
Still, he was tempted by the giant Tenseigan's ocular might. Fixating on the shining gold design, he thought, "If only I could transplant that eye's power into mine. The Mangekyō can fuse powers—maybe the same logic applies to the Tenseigan?"
He pictured replicating the Uchiha "eye fusion" method. "First I'll master these ancient texts, then break the Tenseigan merging secrets, plus the Uchiha clan's illusions. Maybe I can—huh?"
He broke off, glancing downward. His gaze pierced the shrine and the protective shell of the artificial sun, peering down at the lunar surface. Something had entered the moon from below—Mu's chakra. The second Tsuchikage was invisible, but Izayoi's Tenseigan easily tracked the presence.
Izayoi looked momentarily confused. "I only just arrived here, and they 'coincidentally' discovered the portal? Is it chance, or is there some unknown factor at play?"
