Sous

Chapter 40: Hacate Arc: Five

A few weeks had gone by and Sous was slowly coming into her own pattern. She was also starting to he referred as the Basilisk Girl since she wore her basilisk like it was an accessory around her neck. Even still, she hadn't a name for it. She was actually starting to come to the conclusion maybe she wouldn't name it at all. One girl even went so far to write a letter to the headmaster to ask why she should also be able to bring her pet to school. Sous' basilisk was a special case. For one, Sous didn't have a home. She had been staying with Shadow for some time but that wasn't her home. In fact, it would seem Sous wouldn't have a home, or at least the school would act as her home until she graduated.

Sous had attempted to find out more about the club Wolves Unite but was met with very little answers. Either the students didn't know about the organization at all, or they knew very little. The only hint Sous was given was to speak with more of the wolf students. Since the club was only for them, it made sense to ask them. The thing was there was hardly any wolves at the moment. Even though students were trickling in as time got closer for school to start, many of the wolves were still absence. At least that's what Sous told herself. There were some wolves like Peo but the few times they interacted, it didn't seem like she could truly have a conversation with him. He seemed sort of standoffish. That's how the wolf students were, for the most part they were secluded and stuck to themselves, rarely interacting with other species. Sous thought that was weird since Nadia was advertised as being more open and the wolves more friendly. She had even gone as far as to Makala about it but Makala told her the wolf students weren't always like that. Toward the beginning of her first year, something happened. Many of the wolves just stopped mingleing with others. It was around the same time the club firmed.

Sous wanted to ask the adults but she got the impression they wouldn't talk to her about it, probably thought it was too political for her. That she was too young.

She had went to the small courtyard to find the elf girl but when she used the unlock spell, she wasn't able to open the door. Makala even tried to help with doing the second level of the unlocking spell but the door still didn't become unlocked. Sous actually liked the elf girl. Maybe the elf girl was indifferent.

Sous' favorite time of day was when she went to the library to read which is want she did most days when she wasn't on the agility field or she enjoyed being in the baths, just relaxing in the warm water. This school probably was the closest she had to home so she might as well take advantage of it.

When it came to friends, Sous didn't have many. She didn't want many knowing she had a target on her back from Apex. Still, Makala- she was starting to consider a friend. Jacob, of course, was already a friend and was also back on campus from being with family in Red Woods. He would be entering his fifth year barely having started the fourth year due to entering the school late. His case was unusual and since he sought asylum, he didn't need a sponsor. Still, after having her best friend, Kenan, killed, she was weary of making too many friends. Because of Makala, she started to get along better with the Pixie Boy. She learned his name but simply fancied calling him Pixie Boy. He tried to create a name similar for Sous but since Sous was mixed with so many things, he didn't know what to call her so took his lost and called her Sous.

Three roommates she now had. She didn't converse with them much, they seemed skiddish especially since she had the basilisk around her next most times of the day. She guessed they thought it was going to turn them into stone. She had tried to informed them that it wouldn't happened until the basilisk was much older but saying that didn't seem to work.

Sous had walked out of the cafeteria wiping her mouth with a napkin, when she heard a familiar voice coming from the entrance. Her ears twitched the closer she got to the main courtyard, seeing Tany present with an older boy and her parents.

"Lavere!" Tany yelled while pointing her wand at her suitcase. She hugged her parents.

Sous walked up to them with the parents seemingly alarmed ar Sous' presence, skeptical of their daughter's interaction with her.

"What's that in that long suitcase?" Sous asked.

"That's my broom," Tany said.

Sous learned the older boy was her older brother, Sous didn't realized she had siblings. Once the parents asked and Sous inquired about the three witches, Tany told her they were attending a conference. That they weren't able to make it.

It was seven o clock, the week prior to the start of class and it was orientation for the first years! Sous already knew her house so she sat quietly next to Tany to see what house she would be in.

The chatter in the auditorium was loud and cheerful, even the faculty and staff laughed and talked amongst themselves. The voices began to shimmer when Headmaster Fanu made himself known, the clapping dying down.

He stood at the front on stage in his finest orange robe and hat. He folded his arms within his large sleeves and looked out toward the students.

"Here we are at another orientation. Congratulations students to being the future of Hacate!"

The room erupted with applause and cheers. He waved his hands down, gesturing for them to shimmer down. Once quiet again, he continued on.

"We are excited to split you up into twelve houses and we look forward to seeing how you blossom with her time here."

From the ceiling, letters began to drop with Tany reaching out her hand to grab the letter. Sous leaned in closer to see what it said when Tany opened it with her pedicure nails.

"HOUSE OF PHILOSOPHY!" They both said in unison but with Sous being the loudest. Tany blushed, liking that she was in the same house as Sous but was prideful. She folded the letter.

"I'm not in the same room as you though. You already have your roommates."

"All but one," said Sous. "I heard she was a wolf but wanted to change rooms."

Tany was going to inquire more but the auditorium quickly transformed into the cafeteria, with tables being put in front of them, their chairs changed positions, shoving them into the table with food presented on the table.

She lowered her voice, making it sound raspy. "I heard the wolves are planning something."

"How do you know that?" Sous asked.

Tany flipped her hair. "I know everything."

"The wolves are all in one house now," said a girl who seemed to a mixture of elf and vampire.

"That's not true!" Said a wolf who was clearly an Omega by his smell. He was outspoken and wore his hair in a red mohawk.

"Yeah, that's right. We're still here." Sous turned to look at the Alpha female who sat next to the boy with the red mohawk. If Sous didn't know any better, she would have assumed the two were mated already.

"What houses are y'all in?" Sous asked.

"House of Self!" Piped the female Alpha.

"House of Family," the male Omega said. He shrugged his shoulders. "I heard most Omegas are in the House of Family." Sous didn't know that but automatically thought of Kara being in the House of Family.

"Hmm," Tany started. "House 9, 1, and 4. We're all Fire Elements except for you," she said to the male Omega. "You're water."

Sous learned the female Alpha was named Randali and was from the Witching Salons, a small community of wolves. The male Omega was named Zan and from the outskirts of the Valley of Trey, medium size wolf community.

She was happy to meet wolves who were...nice. It was refreshing considering where she came from and who she was running from.

After dinner, they walked the campus, with teachers splitting them up into their houses. Randali and Zan had split into their groups, saying bye and promising to meet Sous and Tany in the dueling arena later in the day.

The 9th House, House of Philosophy was stationed in the library and since Sous already knew where it was, she watched the facial expressions of Tany as the teacher spoke. Tany made very little facial expressions besides for smugness though. It made Sous chuckle.

Sous stopped following the teacher when Tany was dropped off at her room along with her roommate's. The rooms all looked the same. There wasn't anything special about them so Sous plopped down on the bed.

"Whao, what are you doing?" Tany asked.

"This is the only bed free so its yours." Sous pushed back. Tany looked around the room and saw the other girls already unpacking, having had chosen their beds. Tany's eyebrow twitched as she looked back at Sous, her baby serpent squirming around the bed, flicking its tongue. It was...it was sort of cute.

There was tap on the door frame, the girls looked to see who it was. Randali and Zan along with Jacob, Makala, and Pixie Boy.

"SOUS!" They all screamed.

Tany laughed, taking Sous' arm, swinging on it while smiling up at Sous. Did she get taller?

"Look at you, all your friends. Its like you got your own little pack!"

Sous smiled down at Tany then back at her-at her new batch of friends.
