Chapter 168: Chapter 170: Fate’s Teacher
Chapter 170: Fate's Teacher
In the following days, Ye Wen occasionally observed Tang San's training. He wasn't particularly interested in the Tang Sect techniques, as his own knowledge far surpassed the so called "Mysterious Heaven Skill." Instead, he was hoping to detect any interference from the God of Shura. Unfortunately, with the apparent time difference between the Douluo Continent and the Divine Realm, there were no signs of manipulation.
Finally, the day came for Tang San to start his formal education.
To Ye Wen, the idea of Tang San attending such a basic academy seemed impractical. Even as flawed as Tang Hao was, did Tang San really need to go to a school for rudimentary soul master knowledge? Especially with his innate talents?
At the gates of Notting Academy, the storyline proceeded familiarly. The doorman looked down his nose at Tang San and the village elder in their patched clothes. With an air of disdain, he tossed Tang San's soul master certificate on the ground.
"What's this supposed to be? Notting Academy isn't a place for country bumpkins like you. An 'innate full spirit power' for a green vine martial spirit? What nonsense! Think I've never read Master Ye Wen's theories?"
Wait, what? How did this even involve him? Hidden from view, Ye Wen was thoroughly baffled.
Sure, he'd written about the correlation between innate spirit power and martial spirit quality, but why would a doorman with no spirit power care?
The guard went on insulting the elder, calling his village a "beggar's den." Incensed, the village elder blurted, "Just you wait! I'll get Deacon Andrew from Spirit Hall to set things right!" Scooping up Tang San's certificate, he tugged Tang San along, preparing to leave.
Ye Wen couldn't help noticing a flash of killing intent from Tang San, whose left hand twitched as if ready to strike. Yet, it seemed he managed to restrain himself.
Mysterious Heaven Technique Rule #3: If an opponent is deemed an enemy, and there is cause to kill, do not show mercy, lest you bring trouble upon yourself.
Ye Wen shook his head in disbelief. The original Tang San had once rationalized eliminating a mere doorman for daring to insult the elder, convinced he'd never be suspected. But Ye Wen couldn't fathom Tang San's logic. If a dispute escalated and one party ended up dead, the other would be the prime suspect. Tang San had no storage device to hide any weapons either, so a search would have revealed everything.
However, Tang San eventually held back, not due to mercy, but due to the sudden appearance of Grandmaster Yu Xiaogang.
Yu Xiaogang, known for his unconscious need to impress others, had instinctively let a bit of his spirit power seep out. Sensing this, Tang San realized the stranger was powerful and reined in his urge to kill.
"What's going on here?" Yu Xiaogang asked flatly, noting the tension at the gate. The doorman perked up and greeted him eagerly.
"Doctor Yu, you're back! Nothing to worry about, just a couple of country folk causing trouble. I was just about to send them on their way." The doorman grovelled and bowed, not daring to scorn Yu Xiaogang, whose power easily kept him in line.
Yu Xiaogang ignored the doorman and turned instead to the elder and Tang San, asking, "Elder, could you explain the situation?"
Sweat beaded on the doorman's forehead. He wasn't a guard based on skill; his job had come from a family connection to a spirit master. Though he enjoyed bullying weaker souls, especially students from modest backgrounds, he now found himself nervous in Yu Xiaogang's presence.
With some hesitancy, the village elder explained, "Respected Spirit Master, we're here to enroll a new student, but this guard accused us of presenting a fake certificate and was about to throw us out. I intended to find the Spirit Hall deacon for help."
Yu Xiaogang's sense of righteousness had only grown with the activation of his Radiant Holy Dragon spirit. After confirming the certificate was genuine, his expression softened, and he assured the elder, "This certificate is real, elder."
He turned to the doorman, eyes cold. "If something like this happens again, you're done here."
The doorman muttered apologies, bitterly frustrated by Yu Xiaogang's interference. However, since Yu Xiaogang had been residing at Notting Academy and carrying the title of "Doctor," the man dared not openly protest. Though Yu Xiaogang had yet to teach a single class, his old friend, the headmaster, granted him the same privileges as a faculty member.
Thus, under Yu Xiaogang's guidance, Tang San completed his enrollment. Along the way, Yu Xiaogang revealed to Tang San the unique nature of his "superior" martial spirit.
Unlike regular green vines, Tang San's spirit had different marks and characteristics, clearly indicating a variant martial spirit. Following Ye Wen's theories, Yu Xiaogang was certain that only a top tier spirit could manifest with innate full spirit power.
He asked Tang San to summon his spirit for a closer look, but as Tang San's vine emerged, it looked disappointingly ordinary, just a bit more resilient than usual.
Yu Xiaogang's expression grew troubled as he murmured, "This doesn't make sense… A plant martial spirit with full spirit power shouldn't be this weak."
