Chapter 4: Rose and the Beast
It is noon. The heat mixed with the humidity is unbearable. But the beauty of the island keeps the people outdoors. Inside a thick forest with gigantic mangrove trees lies a sleeping beauty. Her hammer rests beside her, reflecting the sunlight. A bubble pops, and the sleeping beauty becomes a fearsome warrior with her huge hammer. Her eyes scan the area, preparing for the upcoming threat. But nothing. She watches a bubble float to the sky and pop. A dozen others do the same. She lowers her guard.
"That's beautiful."
Above her is a roof of leaves. Sunlight barely passes through. The trees are gray with dark vertical stripes. She has never seen trees as big or thick as those around her. Their roots look like legs coming out of the ground. She walks through the forest admiring the beauty of it. The hammer gets thrown in the air and caught on the ground, all while she hums a melody.
"Sonic! Tails! Knuckles! Where are you guys?"
She catches her hammer and looks around.
"Follow the sound of my hammer!"
She hits the ground multiple times. The metallic sound echoes throughout the forest.
"Sonic, are you there?"
She picks up a flower from the ground.
"Found a gift for you!"
She smells the flower and puts it in her hair.
"If you're there, stop hiding. It's not funny. The forest is starting to creep me out."
Whispers and footsteps break the fairytale of this beautiful forest. The hammer is now above her shoulders.
"Show yourself. No point in hiding if I know you're there."
A frail man with long limbs and an oddly pointy face approaches Amy. His long fingers grab the sword from behind him while staring at her. His smile goes from one ear to the other.
"Stay back, weirdo. I told you to show yourself, not to come to me. Tell the others you're with to do the same—unless you were whispering to yourself. Wouldn't surprise me coming from a guy looking like that."
The man laughs and whistles. A group of men appear from behind the trees and roots. Others come on flying motorcycles. All of them armed to the teeth.
"Come with us, little girl. We won't hurt you," says the tall, frail man.
"Like hell I'll follow a bunch of guys like you. What do you want?"
She adjusts her grip on the hammer.
"Just… business. Nothing bad. A man needs a way to buy some bread for the day. Wouldn't you agree? You look hungry yourself. Follow us—you'll have some place to eat and sleep. Trust me."
"Trust you? I'd rather trust a hollow parachute than a bunch of pervs like you."
"You're either coming with us on your own accord, or by force, young lady." The goons start laughing.
"Try, and I'll rip your heads off your bodies!" Amy shouts at the group of criminals.
The leader gestures at his men to attack. They yell a warcry and jump at her. With a single swing of her hammer, she sends 10 of them flying into the trees. Those on the motorcycles charge at her while shooting. Amy dodges the bullets and throws the hammer at them. It ricochets off all the vehicles, making them explode in the air. She catches her weapon and charges at the bandits on the ground. They look like angry toddlers compared to her. They stand no chance. They're sent flying left and right. Some of them abandon the fight and run away. The leader sighs.
"Taking care of a little girl cannot be that hard, you bunch of good-for-nothings!" he yells at his men. He catches one trying to run away by the collar.
"Where the hell do you think you're going?"
"She… she's too strong, boss," the bandit says, shaking.
"And you were ready to abandon me?" he says with a sad face.
"Are you more afraid of that girl than the great Kiro?" he screams in anger.
"No… no sir. You are the most powerful man in all the Sabaody Archipelago."
"Good, good. Then go take her!" Kiro screams at the man's face in a high-pitched voice.
The man picks up his sword from the ground and rushes at Amy while yelling. She prepares her attack, but just as she's about to strike, she gets hit by a tail. The attack sends her and the bandit crashing to the ground. She lifts her head and sees a giant lizard rushing toward her. The tail strikes the ground multiple times, trying to catch the young lady. Amy jumps at the monster, her hammer ready to crush him. The lizard dodges the attack and punches her in the gut.
Amy crashes into a tree, leaving a crack. She slides back down to the ground. The lizard goes into a hybrid form. He now looks like a half-man, half-reptile. His tongue sticks out of his mouth, forming a devious smile.
"This could've been avoided if you simply listened."
Amy tries to stand up, but she's in too much pain. Her heart beats faster and faster as the man slowly approaches her.
"But I'm not mad. I'm actually glad you did that. This little fight we had just increased your value. Thanks to you, I, the great Kiro, will become one of the most powerful men in the Grand Line!"
He then lets out a ridiculously high-pitched laugh. Amy uses this distraction to grab her hammer, but a tail wraps around her neck.
"It's over. You lost. No need to fight anymore, little girl. Your value won't increase any longer."
What does he mean by that? she thought to herself.
"So…nic," she tries to say while being suffocated.
"Hmm? What did you say?"
"Sonic… help… me." Kiro laughs.
"Unfortunately, that Sonic guy won't come. We're far away from any town here. We're alone. You and me," he says with his tongue going across his lips. Amy spits in his face.
"Looks like you're gonna be a hard one to carry. Let me take care of that."
He opens his mouth wide, letting purple liquid drip down his fangs. Amy barely has time to scream. The man already bites her neck. She feels dizzy. Her head hurts, her vision darkens, her limbs heavy.
"He… help… me. Sonic." Her eyelids close shut.
