Chapter 497: 496: The Runes Betray
Pamela's words were spoken with immense confidence and calmness as she stared at Zal'Zerael, her infinity-marked eyes glinting with an almost playful malice.
The wounds on her body glowed faintly as the runes she'd etched into her flesh worked to seal the damage. However, she wasn't done… not by a long shot.
"Alright, Zal," Pamela said, flicking her wrist, and the draconic abomination's eyes twitched in anger. "Time to remind you why I'm the baddest bitch in the entire fucking universe."
In an instant, dozens of glowing rune circles materialized around her, each spinning and pulsating with vibrant energy. They hovered like an intricate constellation and their light illuminated the storm-ridden battlefield.
"Arcane Constellation: Orbital Assault."
The rune circles launched beams of energy toward Zal'Zerael, each beam crackling with a destructive power that would turn Tier 4s and even some Tier 5s if it so much as grazed their bodies.
The beams arced unpredictably, weaving through the air like hunting serpents, converging on the massive draconic abomination from all sides.
Zal'Zerael roared. It knew it could not dodge because of its massive size, and it had a feeling that morphing into a storm would be a terrible decision because of the nature of the attack.
Its colossal wings snapped outward, and a barrier of lightning formed around its body, absorbing the first wave of attacks, but the sheer intensity of the barrage began to crack the barrier.
It was just too much. Hundreds of energy beams barraged its barrier with every second that passed, and the power behind each energy beam was immense.
Not only that, Zal'Zerael came to the realization that the energy beams were adapting to the nature of his barrier, and to his disbelief, they were even getting stronger.
Pamela smirked. "Not so tough now, are you?"
She raised both hands, summoning an array of Runic Constructs, swords, spears, and whirling chains, all crackling with immense mystic force, mystic mana, and even spiritual power.
With a snap of her fingers, the constructs shot forward, slicing through the air with terrifying speed.
The swords struck first, slashing Zal'Zerael's wings and leaving glowing scars across their stormy form. The spears followed, and they pierced into its fractured body with enough force to send arcs of energy rippling through its frame.
The chains coiled around its legs, binding it to the ground.
Zal'Zerael roared, its body writhing as it tried to free itself. Lightning surged across its form, but the constructs held firm, their glowing runes resisting its power.
Pamela crossed her arms, hovering above the battlefield like a queen surveying her domain.
"Honestly, It has been fun, but I expected more from you… All bark, no-"

Pamela's words got stuck in her throat, and her eyes widened slightly in disbelief when she felt a change in the environment. The runes whispered urgently in her ears, but it was too late.
Something felt… wrong.
The runes around her, the runes of the shattered dimension, the ever-present language of the universe, the foundation of reality which she could hear… suddenly fell silent.
And they… they cried.
To Pamela, it was a cry that was similar to the cry a child makes when his sweet is taken from him, or when a child is taken from their mother.
This was the cry the runes made.
Pamela's head snapped toward Zal'Zerael as the draconic abomination began to move. The glowing scars across its body pulsed violently, and the runes etched into its wings flared to life.
But these weren't Pamela's runes. These weren't the runes that had chained Zal'Zerael along with the energy chains she manifested. These were ancient, primal runes, older than anything she'd ever encountered.
As she gazed at these strange runes, she could feel the maliciousness, madness, and evil in them. She almost puked out her guts staring at these runes.
If Corey were here, he would recognize these runes because these were some of the runes he saw in the abandoned Temple of the Old Ones.
"You think you're the only one that can manipulate and interact with the runes of the world?" Zal'Zerael rumbled, its voice dripping with disdain and arrogance, "Though your connection with the runes is profound, you are but a human… I am… a Dragon."
The runes around Pamela trembled intensely the moment Zal'Zerael spoke, and the air began to shift.
Pamela's eyes widened when she saw this, however, her mind was on Zal'Zerael's words.
'A dragon? So, it's actually a dragon… Maybe a mutated dragon?'
Although Zal'Zerael had the appearance of a dragon and Pamela had never seen a dragon, she was certain that no normal dragon had Zal'Zerael's appearance.
It looked more like an abomination and a nightmare.
"Dragons are the masters of runes… A human like you has no business controlling runes, especially the runes of an extremely important and powerful world like the shattered dimension of the Old Ones."
Zal'Zerael growled, its voice dripping in unveiled disdain, and then it pointed at Pamela with one of its jagged claws.
"The runes do not belong to you, Outsider… They are mine to command."
Pamela's eyes widened as the runes in the air began to shift. Symbols that she had carefully placed and controlled twisted and morphed, their shapes warping into something unrecognizable.
"Oh, shit," Pamela muttered, her hands moving rapidly as she tried to reassert control. "You're not supposed to be able to-"
BOOM!
Before she could finish, one of her runes detonated, sending a shockwave of energy that threw her backwards. She tumbled through the air, barely managing to catch herself by manipulating the wind around her to slow her descent to the ground.
Zal'Zerael chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that vibrated through the battlefield.
"You thought yourself a master. But you're just a child playing with forces beyond your comprehension."
The dragon mocked, and then he raised of massive claw, and the runes of the world converged around it. Symbols of power and destruction swirled in a chaotic dance, their light casting eerie shadows across the storm.
"World Rune: Tempest Spiral."
