Sing: The Talented Furry

Chapter 17: Judy Hopps

Officer Labrador led Judy down the bustling hallway of the ZPD toward the garage. His golden fur was still slightly ruffled from rushing around, and his clipboard wobbled in his paw as he spoke.

"Alright, Hopps, you're gonna meet your team. They're… well, they're a little unique, but they get the job done."

Judy's ears perked up. "Unique how?"

"You'll see."

They stepped into the garage where two very distinct figures stood by a sleek ZPD patrol car. The first was a tall, imposing Doberman with dark brown fur and an avocado-shaped head. His eyes were sharp and black, his dark blue cap perfectly straight with the ZPD logo gleaming on it.

His uniform was crisp, complete with a light blue necktie and a paw-shaped medal. But what really caught Judy's eye was the pair of bone-shaped nunchucks hanging on his back.

Beside him stood a much shorter officer — a Papillon dog with soft rose-pink and white fur. Her short ears flopped into pigtail-like shapes, and her dark blue police uniform looked a little oversized, though her yellow paw-print badge was polished and gleaming. A dark blue police hat tilted slightly on her head, and behind her, an array of tools... including what looked like robotic hands were carefully strapped in place.

The Doberman eyed Judy critically before speaking in a deep, gruff voice. "You're the bunny?"

Judy straightened up. "Officer Judy Hopps, reporting for duty!" She stuck out her paw.

He didn't take it. "Officer Dobie. I don't do small talk. I do my job."

Judy's paw slowly lowered. "Right. Got it."

Then the Papillon bounced forward, grinning wide. "Oh my gosh, you're adorable!" she squealed. "I knew they hired a bunny, but you're so much cuter in person!"

Judy's smile froze. "Y-you know, bunnies don't really like being called—"

"Oh! I'm Officer Papillon, by the way," the Papillon interrupted, offering her paw. "But you can call me Papi! Everyone does."

Judy shook her paw, grateful for at least one friendly face. "Nice to meet you, Papi!"

"Likewise! And don't worry about Dobie — he's all bark, no bite." She leaned in with a whisper. "Unless you touch his nunchucks. Then there's biting."

Dobie's ears flicked. "I heard that."

"Good!" Papi chirped.

Labrador cleared his throat. "Alright, team, your mission's simple, you're heading to the bus station near meadowlands to pick up the contestants for the Rising Star show. It's a high-profile gig, so keep it professional. Got it?"

"Yes, sir!" the three officers responded in unison.

Dobie was already moving toward the car. "Let's go. We're on a schedule."

Judy climbed into the backseat, and Papi hopped into the passenger side, already fiddling with one of her robotic tools while Dobie slid into the driver's seat and adjust the mirror.

As they pulled out of the garage and onto the bustling streets of Zootopia, Judy glanced at her two new partners and thought, "No more parking duty for me!"

(A/N: I'm not sure if you know these police characters, but I bet anyone with kids or younger siblings does — lol!)

As the contestants rode the escalator, Prince, Rocky, and CJ couldn't help but marvel at everything around them. Zootopia was unlike anything they had ever seen — a city where every animal, big and small, had a place tailored just for them.

"Whoa, look at that!" Rocky pointed excitedly as a hippo emerged from the nearby train station's underwater section, dripping wet. As soon as it stepped onto the platform, powerful floor vents whooshed upward, drying the hippo off in seconds.

CJ's eyes went wide. "That's so cool! Why don't we have that back in Calatonia?"

"Probably because we don't have underwater trains," Prince said with a smirk, but his own amazement was hard to hide.

Their attention shifted when they passed a series of glass hamster tunnels snaking around the station walls. Tiny lemmings in business suits slid through them at impressive speeds, zipping in and out of different exits. One lemming missed a turn and slammed into the glass with a soft thud, quickly shaking it off before diving back in.

Rocky snorted. "You see that? That little dude get wiped out."

CJ laughed. "Man, this city is wild. I can't believe we've never been outside Calatonia before!"

"Right?" Prince grinned, but his mind wandered. There was a sense of excitement mixed with unease, especially with the new environment and the singing competition.

As they finally reached the waiting shed, a sleek, modern structure with curved glass walls and plenty of seating. But before they could even settle in, the sound of screeching tires drew everyone's attention. Three police cars pulled up, lights flashing, followed by over twenty imposing black vans.

"Whoa… what's with all the security?" Rocky whispered.

The police officers poured out of their cars, a mix of tough-looking predators and professional-looking prey. A tiger adjusted his sunglasses, a wolf exchanged words with a dog who looked like he could punch through a wall, and then —

A bunny.

A small, gray-furred bunny in a perfectly fitted ZPD uniform hopped out of one of the cars, ears tall and eyes bright. Prince's mind raced, a strange sense of recognition sparking inside him. He didn't know her, but at the same time… he did.

Could it really be—?

"Hey, look," one of the contestants whispered to their friend, snickering. "A bunny cop? Didn't know the ZPD was accepting prey these days."

CJ's ears flattened, and his fur bristled. "Hey—"

Rocky put a firm paw on his friend's shoulder. "Don't, man. Let it go. You know how things are right now. There's still a lot of… tension between predators and prey."

CJ clenched his fists but let out a frustrated sigh, stepping back. "I hate this stupid prejudice."

Before anyone could respond, a staff member's voice cut through the crowd. "Alright, listen up! The police will be escorting us to the Rising Star studio, where training and the competition will continue. Once we get there, the coaches will announce your challenges — so stay focused and follow instructions."

As the staff started directing them toward the vans, Prince's eyes flicked back to the bunny officer. His curiosity burned. He needed to know if his suspicion was right.

"Hey, let's go!" Rocky nudged him. Their group was assigned to one of the vans being escorted by the team with the Doberman officer.

As they climbed in, the bunny stood nearby, watching the contestants with a warm but professional smile. "Good morning, everyone!" she greeted cheerfully.

Prince felt his heart beat faster. He offered a friendly smile. "Good morning, Officer…?"

The bunny turned toward him, her ears twitching slightly. "Hopps. Officer Judy Hopps."

That confirmed it.
