Chapter 4: CH 4
Empire State University.
The premier university in New York City.
Gwen Stacy jogged across the campus, her steps light and quick as she headed toward the school's sports venue. When she arrived, she saw the members of the rock band packing up their instruments.
"Sorry, I was late!" Gwen apologized as she approached them.
Oddly, despite running the whole way, she didn't feel the slightest bit tired. Her breathing remained steady, and she wasn't even slightly out of breath—something she didn't consciously notice.
The band members, seeing Gwen arrive, waved her apology away.
"Don't worry about it! It wasn't an important performance, just a rehearsal."
"Yeah, but if you're late next time, Gwen, you owe us an extra two hours of solo practice!"
Another band member added with a grin, "Too bad we couldn't go over one more song together. But I guess the basketball cheerleading team's rehearsal took priority, huh?"
As the band members teased her while packing up their gear, Gwen could only offer more apologies.
At that moment, she felt someone approaching from behind. Instinctively, she turned just as a hand was about to tap her shoulder.
She immediately recognized the owner of that hand.
"Hey, Peter!"
Peter Parker, looking a bit shy under Gwen's bright smile, hesitated before responding.
"H-Hey, Gwen… Uh, I had some free time today, so I thought I'd stop by to watch your rehearsal."
Gwen clapped her hands together and bowed slightly in apology.
"Ah, I'm so sorry, Peter! Something unexpected happened on the way here, so I got delayed."
"It's okay, Gwen. I didn't let you know I was coming, so no big deal."
With a playful smile, Gwen elbowed Peter in the chest like an old friend.
"To make it up to you, how about I treat you to a cup of coffee? You're not rushing back to the lab, right?"
Peter froze for a moment before nodding.
"Uh, no… no one in the lab needs help right now, so I've got time."
"Then it's settled!"
Before Peter could say another word, Gwen turned to her bandmates.
"Come on, you guys, let's go get some coffee! My treat as a reward for today's practice!"
"Woohoo!"
The band members cheered excitedly.
Standing behind them, Peter's smile faltered just slightly. But before his thoughts could wander too far, Gwen called out to him.
"Hey, Peter! Come on!"
"O-Okay!"
Peter quickly caught up and began walking beside her.
As they strolled toward the coffee shop, Gwen casually asked, "So, how's the experiment with Professor Connors going?"
"Still the same. Not much progress, unfortunately. But yesterday's Oscorp Industrial Exhibition gave me some new ideas. I've already written them down, and I plan to discuss them with Professor Connors this afternoon."
Hearing the name Oscorp, Gwen's mind instantly flashed back to the strange spider bite she'd gotten the night before. She also recalled the bizarre dream she'd had while unconscious at Ethan's manor—where she'd transformed into a giant, terrifying spider.
The memory sent a shiver down her spine.
Suddenly, Gwen's entire body tensed—her instincts screaming that danger was near!
"Gwen, look out!" one of the band members shouted.
From behind, a basketball soared through the air, heading directly toward Gwen and Peter.
The basketball court was adjacent to the sports venue where the cheerleading team was rehearsing. It seemed one of the basketball players had tried to show off in front of the cheerleaders—only to mess up and launch the ball toward the wrong target.
What happened next was unexpected.
Instead of hitting her, the basketball abruptly stopped with a muffled thump.
Gwen had caught it—without even turning around!
Her reflexes had been so fast, it was as if her body had acted on its own.
Staring at the ball in her hands, Gwen blinked in astonishment.
What just happened?
"Gwen, are you okay?" Peter asked, his voice full of concern.
"I'm fine, Peter. Sorry if that scared you."
She quickly tossed the ball back to the player who had accidentally thrown it.
The small accident passed as quickly as it had come, and the band members soon gathered around her.
"Gwen, that was awesome! When did you learn to catch a basketball like that?"
"Yeah! You have no idea how scared I was—I thought you were gonna get hit for sure!"
Gwen could only smile awkwardly, unsure how to explain what had just happened.
"Guess I got lucky… Anyway, let's go get that coffee. Everyone's probably thirsty."
Throughout the afternoon, Gwen found herself constantly replaying the events of the day in her mind.
She couldn't shake the feeling that something inside her was changing.
This strange transformation had to be connected to that spider bite from Oscorp. But so far, she had no concrete evidence to prove it.
Outside the School Gate.
After finishing up all her activities for the day, Gwen slowly made her way toward the campus entrance, her gaze fixed on her hands.
What's happening to me…?
Lost in thought, she was startled by the sudden honk of a car horn.
Looking up, she saw a black car parked by the curb. The window slowly rolled down, revealing a middle-aged man with short blond hair.
"Dad!" Gwen crossed her arms and pouted. "You scared me!"
"Sorry, sweetheart." George Stacy chuckled as he glanced at her hands. "What's up with your hands? You hurt or something?"
Gwen quickly lowered her hands, unsure how to explain.
"Nothing! It's just… I thought they looked kinda nice today."
"Well, of course! You inherited your mom's and my excellent genes."
Rolling her eyes at her father's playful narcissism, Gwen climbed into the passenger seat without another word.
As George started driving, he glanced at her from the corner of his eye.
"If you're thinking of painting your nails, I've got no objections."
"Dad, seriously?" Gwen groaned, leaning back in her seat and closing her eyes.
Her thoughts drifted back to everything that had happened since last night.
From the spider bite to fainting at Ethan's manor…
And, for some reason, the memory of Ethan carrying her into his house made her heart skip a beat.
It would've been nice if I hadn't passed out back then…
Her eyes shot open as she realized what she'd just thought.
Why did that pop into my head all of a sudden?
Blushing furiously, Gwen buried her face in her hands, trying to shake off the sudden wave of embarrassment.
