Mira's eyes followed the plates with finished french toast as they were carried over to the counter, already looking forward to eating them. And just then, the door of the dining hall swung open.
The first one to arrive was Alfina, wearing plain clothes. She briefly spoke over to the kitchen, saying, 「Good morning Frodina, I see you're hard at work as usual,」 and then starting to clean and get the table ready. That was their usual morning routine, except that this time, when Frodina returned the greeting, she glanced at Mira with a mischievous grin.
「Oh, that's an interesting menu you've chosen today.」
After cleaning, Alfina went to look at the plates lined up on the counter, noticing the french toast on them, as it was not something they ate often. Later on, Mira would find out that they hardly ate anything too sweet.
The pot with the tomatoes was still hidden away in the kitchen, so Alfina would not see it yet.
「Our Master requested that yesterday, so I made it to honor her wishes. I also used a Uthofnir egg for it, so I'm sure it'll be an invigorating breakfast.」
When Frodina cleared that up, Alfina's face lit up in an instant.
「So that's why. You did really well, Frodina!」
(Somehow, I feel like I shouldn't be watching this…)
Alfina's zealous devotion to Mira was something that stretched over to the most common of things, as she quickly began fussing over everything, mumbling, 「This will be her seat…」 or 「What should we get her to drink…」 while running around getting everything ready. Then, she began staring at the french toast, with the attention of a warrior facing a mighty beast, trying to determine which slices looked the best.
「…Ah, Alfina. You don't have to go that far, it's fine.」
Eventually, it became too hard to watch for Mira, so she peeked out from the kitchen and told Alfina to relax a bit.
That was something Alfina had not been expecting at all, standing stunned for a moment before quickly turning around and exclaiming 「Master?!」 with a confused voice. That was a stark contrast to Alfina's usual calm and collected attitude, making Frodina giggle.
「Good morning, Master. I wasn't aware you were here as well, if I did, I wouldn't have been so late to greet you.」
Alfina had been staring at the french toast like a cat preparing to pounce, and after recovering from her shock, she quickly straightened her back and politely greeted Mira.
「Good morning, Alfina. And don't worry about it, I'm partly to blame for not showing myself sooner.」
In a way, Mira actually appreciated that she was able to see how Alfina acted when Mira was not around. 「That's no excuse for my actions!」 Alfina insisted, turning to glare at Frodina in the kitchen for not saying anything.
But Frodina pretended not to notice as she began putting away the used utensils.
「What, learning to cook…?!」
Alfina had gotten curious as to why Mira was in the kitchen, and once she got a short explanation, she exclaimed loudly, being both surprised and jealous. She envied Frodina for being of use in battle and out of battle as well.
That led the conversation to discuss cooking, with Mira praising Frodina's skill, and Alfina commenting with pride and a bit of envy that her sister was one of the best cooks in all of Valhalla.
「Good morninggg… Ah, Master! Good morning!!」
Christina was the second one to arrive at the dining room, already full of energy so early in the morning, and when she spotted Mira in the kitchen, she ran over to see her, then adding with a bit of excitement, 「Could it be that you prepared breakfast today?!」
「No, I was merely trying to learn how to cook.」
When Mira replied, Christina's shoulders slumped over as she said, 「Ah, I see…」 clearly sounding dejected. That was something Frodina would not let pass.
「Oh? So my cooking isn't good enough for you?」
Frodina said that with a smile, but her eyes were dead serious as she turned to look at Christina, making her reconsider her words and realize how they could be misunderstood. It almost sounded like she was not satisfied with Frodina's food so far.
「No, that's not what I meant! I was just thinking how amazing it would be to try our Master's cooking, that's all…」
She quickly tried to explain herself, wanting to resolve the conflict peacefully as Frodina was the second person after Alfina who she wanted to keep in a good mood, as Frodina was the one in charge of all the food there.
「That's true, I'd also like to try that.」
This chapter was first seen on MV^LEM^PYR.
It had been a desperate excuse, but mentioning Mira carried a lot of weight, making Alfina join Christina's side. That also made Frodina ease the pressure, allowing Christina to heave a sigh of relief.
「Ah, could that be…!」
Barely a second later, Christina's eyes began to sparkle as she dashed to the table, noticing the french toast on the plates there.
That revealed the true reason behind Christina's excitement when she saw Mira in the kitchen: The possibility that something sweet was going to be served.
Christina had a big sweet tooth, and she was always on the prowl for something sweet, regardless of the time of the day. That had also led her to develop the skills necessary to navigate through heavily protected zones, like those in the fields with sweet fruits.1
But that could only do so much to placate her lust for sugar. There was something about desserts like cakes and puddings that could not be matched by raw fruits.
Sadly for her, sweets were hardly ever served there, as Frodina had mentioned before. Except that this day, there was a new factor involved in the food that would be served, which filled Christina with hope.
She knew that Mira also had a sweet tooth, and if Mira had made any requests for breakfast, it more than likely would be something like pancakes.
That was her only desire, and surely enough, her prayers were answered as there was something sweet being served, and she was beside herself with joy.
「This is what our Master desired for breakfast.」
Frodina added that, which only made Christina's smile shine brighter.
「I knew she had good taste! This is how all breakfasts should be!」
Christina quickly said that, really wanting to make this happen more commonly. 「Yes, it's nice to start the day with something sweet,」 added Frodina, showing she was not against the idea.
They were also looking straight at Alfina as they said that, making it seem like she was the one responsible for the lack of sweet items in their menu.
「Yes, that might be so.」
Alfina's voice was pensive, like she was reconsidering something. Mira was the highest authority in her life, so it was only natural to follow Mira's lead for her.
「Hmm hmm, let's see, which one is the biggest…this one! I'll take this plate!!」
Hearts seemed to appear in Christina's eyes as she displayed an uncommon amount of focus as she began carefully measuring and comparing the french toast slices, showing an uncommon talent of hers. All of them were roughly the same shape, but there was a small amount of variance, and she picked the biggest one for herself, gleefully carrying the plate to her seat.
「Christina! Our Master still hasn't—」
