vol. 1 chapter 29 - Kindergarten Enrollment
Kindergarten Enrollment
After the exam ended, Aoi spent a peaceful stretch of days and continued to grow. As he got older, the failed virtual-body-turned-wraith-like things stopped approaching him, and his amount of ability grew naturally with him.
Ever since the exam, perhaps because Aoi’s parents no longer had to worry about his powers going out of control, they started taking him to the park more often, letting him interact with kids his age. Aoi was somewhat shy around strangers, so he didn’t really approach others to make friends on his own, but his gentle and androgynous beauty naturally drew people to him.
"Aoi-kun! Come on~!"
"Wah—! Wait up, Luna-chan…!"
An energetic girl pulled Aoi’s hand and took off running. Aoi, unable to resist, was pulled along just like that. The girl he called Luna-chan was Nishizono Luna, a friend he’d gotten close to since they started playing together in the park.
"Luna! Be careful today—it’s your entrance ceremony, so don’t trip!"
"Hehe, she’s really full of energy, isn’t she?"
A short distance behind them, their mothers walked along together. Just like Luna’s mother said, today was the kindergarten entrance ceremony. Both Aoi and Luna, dressed in their brand-new uniforms, were visibly excited.
"Come on, come on—! Ah!"
Just as her mom feared, Luna, still holding Aoi’s hand and bouncing with excitement, stumbled.
"Luna-chan!"
Aoi quickly reacted when Luna lost her grip. He grabbed her hand and pulled her in close, wrapping his arm around her waist to steady her. Their faces ended up close, and Luna, taken aback by Aoi’s serious expression, blushed bright red.
"Are you okay, Luna-chan?"
"Y-Yeah… Thank you, Aoi-kun…"
Seeing Luna nearly fall, the mothers hurried over. Noticing her mom approaching, Luna quickly stepped away from Aoi, blushing even harder.
"See? I told you to be careful not to fall!"
"I’m sorry…"
Luna looked completely dejected after being scolded. Watching her, Aoi reached out his hand again and gently spoke.
"Luna-chan, how about we walk slowly together this time?"
"O-Okay…"
Blushing like a red apple, Luna grabbed his hand firmly and walked beside him. The two mothers exchanged knowing smiles.
"Fufu, Luna-chan’s so cute, isn’t she?"
"Ahaha… She’s a bit of a handful, honestly."
"She’s very lively—that’s a good thing!"
As the mothers watched the two walk hand-in-hand, the kindergarten came into view up ahead. Luna glanced at her and Aoi’s clasped hands wistfully, knowing they were almost there.
"I hope I’m in the same class as Aoi-kun…"
"Yeah, I’d be happy if we were together too, Luna-chan."
Aoi smiled sweetly, making Luna blush all over again. Aoi, you sinful little gentleman…
Soon they arrived at the kindergarten, and everyone made their way to the entrance ceremony venue. After checking in, the children and their guardians were guided to separate seating areas.
"When they call your name, respond with a big voice, okay?"
"Okay!"
"Do your best, Aoi. I’ll be cheering you on."
"Yeah! See you soon!"
Saying their goodbyes, Aoi and the others took their seats. Luna followed Aoi anxiously. Strangely enough, Aoi seemed very composed. With his mature appearance and beauty, he stood out among the other children his age.
The ceremony began shortly after everyone was seated. The adults’ greetings were so long and dull ⊛ Nоvеlιght ⊛ (Read the full story) they could put anyone to sleep (at least from my perspective). But once that was over, they began roll call. Aoi, calm as ever, responded confidently, and even the nervous Luna answered brightly. The entrance ceremony ended without a hitch.
Then came the class assignments...
"Yay! Aoi-kun, we’re in the same class!"
"Yeah. Let’s have fun together, Luna-chan."
Aoi smiled gently at Luna, who was bouncing with excitement. She blushed all over again, clearly knocked out by his charm. Hand in hand, the two headed off to their classroom. After a quick introduction, the first day ended.
On the way home, Luna—still riding high on excitement—waved enthusiastically, shouting:
"See you tomorrow!"
Aoi and his mother waved back and started walking home.
"Did you have fun today, Aoi?"
"Yeah! I had fun with Luna-chan too!"
"That’s wonderful."
Smiling gently, his mother looked relieved. Back home, they showed Aoi’s father the pictures and videos they took, sharing the story of his big day before tucking him in to sleep.
That night, with Aoi and his parents asleep, I was in the usual mental space reading a book, when something appeared in Aoi’s dream-vision.
…What is that? I should probably step in without waking him up.
I switched places with Aoi and opened his eyes to find a message floating in view—from Dr. Ichijou.
“(Congrats on your kindergarten entrance, Seras-kun! If anything happens, feel free to rely on your big sis~)”
…Noisy as always.
Lately, Dr. Ichijou’s been messaging frequently, always aiming for times when Aoi’s probably asleep. I usually just brush her off, but she must’ve heard from our parents about the kindergarten thing and sent her congratulations. I guess I’ll reply just this once.
“Thank you for the message.”
Not even a minute passed before she replied again.
“(That’s cold! Next time you come for a check-up, I’ll have a little entrance gift ready! Look forward to it~!)”
“…Much appreciated.”
Alright. Time to sleep.
And so, Aoi’s entrance ceremony day ended without incident.
Tips: Luna-chan is already completely head over heels for Aoi-kun-chan.
