Chapter 16: SDOPM: Chapter 16
"HUH?!"
A shadowy figure had been tailing Kaito Ren and Saitama. But around the next corner…
WHOOSH! They were gone.
The figure's heart leaped. A frantic search began.
"Looking for me?"
Suddenly, Kaito Ren and Saitama emerged from their hiding spot. Kaito Ren had been aware of the tail, but the guy didn't seem like a monster, so he'd let it slide.
"Just like the intel said. Your senses are exceptionally sharp."
The shadowy figure wasn't surprised. The intel had warned them; even the notoriously stealthy Slug monster was easily spotted by this duo.
"Who are you? Why are you following us?!"
Saitama stepped forward, his tone demanding.
"No hard feelings! Just… curious."
The shadowy figure tried to explain, a little too quickly. Moonlight illuminated the figure, revealing their face.
"YOU?!"
The figure's face was alarmingly pale, eyes faintly bloodshot. Kaito Ren instantly knew.
ZOMBIE MAN!
The only test subject to ever escape the House of Evolution.
"You… know me?!"
Zombieman was clearly taken aback.
"Know you? Of course. Zombieman. Undead. The one and only escapee from the House of Evolution. Code name: 66. Am I right?"
Kaito Ren smirked, rattling off Zombieman's file.
"That's right… but I didn't exactly escape."
Zombieman looked up, a hint of bitterness coloring his features.
"More like… I was discarded. My abilities were deemed… useless."
"DISCARDED?!"
Kaito Ren's eyebrows shot up. If that was true, it explained everything. He'd been puzzled. Even Carnage Kabuto, a Dragon-level Upper, and Beast King, a Dragon-level Lower, couldn't escape the House of Evolution. Yet, Zombieman, a mere Demon-level Peak, had. He'd assumed Zombieman was hiding something. Turns out, he was just… trash.
But the full story was undoubtedly more complex. Kaito Ren suspected Zombieman had been obliterated in a test battle, reduced to nothing more than a pile of… well, remains. Dr. Genus, in his usual careless fashion, probably just tossed the body aside. Then… poof! Zombieman was back.
"So, what do you want?"
Kaito Ren cut to the chase, his expression serious.
"I'm here for you. Two reasons. One: A warning. Beware the House of Evolution. No one who's been targeted has ever escaped. It's far more powerful and terrifying than you can imagine. Two: I'm curious about you. Every human the House of Evolution has deemed A-class potential… they're all incredibly strong. If you survive, you'll become a major player!"
"Seeing you fight those House of Evolution monsters proves my point. If you escape their clutches, you'll become a force to be reckoned with. Good luck."
Zombieman gave a curt nod, a small, almost imperceptible smile playing on his lips, before turning and swiftly departing.
"Weird guy."
Saitama shrugged, watching Zombieman go. He'd been itching for a fight after witnessing his teacher's skills. Oh well.
"Let's go home and sleep."
Kaito Ren watched Zombieman's retreating figure, a frown etching itself onto his brow. Was Zombieman talking about Carnage Kabuto and Beast King when he mentioned the House of Evolution's terrifying power, or was there something… else? Some secret weapon?
Whatever! Bring it on!
HOUSE OF EVOLUTION
"We've lost contact with Hawk-Beak and Mantis again."
"DAMN IT! What happened?! Did something go wrong?!"
"Should we send reinforcements?!"
"Forget it. The computer detected several incredibly powerful energy signatures moving towards Z-City. Until the ultimate experiment is complete, we're staying out of it!"
Dr. Genus took a deep breath. The situation was critical, forcing him to temporarily abandon his plan to capture the A-class potential human. His experiment was nearing its climax; success would yield an unprecedented breakthrough!
HERO ASSOCIATION Z-CITY BRANCH
"Heard two monsters showed up tonight, then some young guy took them both out! He must be seriously strong. Should we recruit him?"
"Necessary? I heard those monsters were pathetically weak, barely scraping by as Wolf-level. Otherwise, no way a single guy could've handled them both."
"True, but still two monsters. And he's young. Think of the potential…"
"ENOUGH! We have limited resources. We're not wasting them on someone with potential. Better to focus on established heroes! How's Back-Brawler Elder doing? Our system estimates his combat power to be at least Demon-level!"
The Z-City head cut off the discussion, making the final call. The Hero Association was brand new and needed to make a name for itself quickly. That meant attracting new recruits and expanding rapidly. No time for this.
"Back-Brawler Elder's almost on board, but he wants all the strong guys from the Back-Brawler Gang included. Otherwise, no deal."
The liaison responsible for contacting Back-Brawler Elder reported.
"Damn it, what a pain! Fine, let's do it. The Back-Brawler Gang does have some strong guys."
The Z-City Hero Association branch head rubbed his temples. He'd heard rumors about the Back-Brawler Gang, but he had no choice but to agree to Elder's terms.
Back-Brawler Elder, a wide grin plastered across his face, was heading back to base camp. He was eager to share the good news with his crew.
But when he opened the door… he was dumbfounded.
