Chapter 4: Grand Humiliation
"Ethan is nothing but a liar and a scumbag, I have known you to be poor and wretched but never did I imagine you will be this naive!" Mrs. Judith screamed in anger as everyone watched Ethan who grew uncomfortable by the second.
Everyone began to murmur as their piercing eyes feasted on Ethan's skin.
"Why did you do this? It's better you brought no gift than coming here with a fake. I trusted that you would make up for your bad behavior tonight but you have only made it worse!" Evelyn cursed as tears welled up in her eyes.
"You worthless brat, you have ruined a perfect evening with your misery!" a guest screamed and like wildfire, everyone began to curse Ethan who could hardly fathom what was going on.
"I didn't buy a fake bracelet! Mr. Antonio is lying to you all!" Ethan screamed.
Mr. Antonio walked forward with a smile and a little device in his hands, "In that case, I will prove to you all that this bracelet is fake!" he revealed and as Evelyn gave him the bracelet, everywhere went silent, each guest eager to see the outcome. But like a bomb, everyone gasped in shock, the result was out and truly, the bracelet was fake.
"Throw this fool out of here! He will learn manners next time!" David Sinclair ordered and watched as his men got hold of Ethan despite his resistance.
"Evelyn! These men are trying to ridicule me before you!" Ethan shouted.
"Leave my sight, Ethan. You have disgraced yourself and you have disgraced me too!" Evelyn shot back as she walked away in anger and in tears. Ethan was taken out and thrown like a piece of garbage on the roadwalk just outside the premises. His suit got torn and so dirty. He had been kicked out of his wife's party.
He could hardly fathom how things had gone wrong in an instant. He looked at the bracelet again, his eyes and heart filled with rage. The guards spat on his face as they left. Onlookers took pictures and videos while he managed to get himself off the ground. But back inside the hall, Lord David and Mr. Antonio silently made a toast with a smile etched on their lips.
"I never knew you could pull this off with so much ease. You did exactly like I told you to," David whispered.
"I told you I can handle this but you doubted me. Ethan paid $10k for the real deal but got a replica at the last minute. I never witnessed a scam so easy as this. He surely won't forget this humiliation in a hurry, but I have my fears!" Mr. Antonio said as they both sipped their wine, watching if anyone was eavesdropping on their sacred conversation.
"There's no need to fear. Ethan has no control, no wealth, and certainly, no connections. I'm just glad you contacted me as quickly as you did. Ethan has always stood in the way but not anymore. This time, I am in control," David Sinclair growled.
"But the celebration seems to be ruined. Mrs. Evelyn is highly disappointed and saddened by this. Are you sure we did the right thing, Mr. Sinclair?" Mr. Antonio asked as guilt slowly filled his black heart. His smile vanished as he noticed the mood of the crowded guests.
"She will come off it. Everything is working and falling into place like I planned it to be. Your reward will be granted to you, Mr. Antonio. Surely you have won my heart tonight," Lord David revealed as he patted Mr. Antonio on the shoulder.
Ethan, on the other hand, had become a shadow of himself in mere minutes. Struggling to keep his rage contained, he realized at once that he had been scammed. This was no ordinary coincidence. And as he marched back to the entrance, a black Mercedes with no plate number honked at him from behind. Rushing with full speed, the car came to a halt and like an arranged mission, four men rushed out and knocked him out, covered his head in a sack bag, and threw him into the trunk before zooming out in the dead of night with only a few witnesses who were left in utter shock.
Ethan slowly woke up from what appeared to be a horrible nightmare, only to find his hands and legs tied to a chair with a light bulb hanging from the ceiling.
"Welcome, Ethan. We have been waiting for you to come out of your beautiful slumber for a while. We have urgent business to attend to," a feminine voice called out to him from the dark corner of the room.
"Who are you and what do you want with me? Where am I?" Ethan screamed.
"You're in a place where no one will find you so easily and until we are finished with our business here, there's no escape for you," the lady revealed as she stepped out into the light. She was beautiful and sexy but those were the least of Ethan's worries as he struggled to free himself.
"You have kidnapped the wrong person! I'm Ethan Brooks, husband of Evelyn Quine! You have got the wrong—"
"Oh shut your dirty mouth, Ethan! I know who the hell you are. You're the dirty slug husband of Evelyn, one of the most top aspiring models in this country. Everyone knows your poverty-stricken name. It's a curse that everyone fears!" she screamed at him and for a moment, Ethan lost his voice as he lowered his head in shame.
"You are here strictly on business!" the lady revealed, snapping her fingers almost immediately. Three men came forward and cut the ropes binding his hands together while the other brought forward a table.
"Who are you?" Ethan asked with a low voice.
"You can call me Mrs. Amber and right here are the divorce files you must sign as courtesy demands," Miss Amber revealed with a smile.
"If this is a prank, you can come off it now because you look more stupid than you appear!" Ethan muttered.
Amber slapped Ethan's face in anger as her rage slowly filled the room.
"I have been given orders to have your signature on these divorce papers before the morning sun and I have been ordered to use any means necessary. Your marriage to Mrs. Evelyn Quine is about to come to an end and not even you can stop it, Mr. Ethan. It's best you sign these papers before things can get ugly for you!" she threatened him, watching as goosebumps appeared on his skin.
"Who are you working for?" Ethan asked as he slowly picked up the pen, staring at the divorce papers like a mirror. He couldn't believe any of this was even real, perhaps it was just another bloody nightmare.
"I work for someone who clearly doesn't want you married to Mrs. Evelyn—"
"I need a name!" Ethan interrupted in anger.
"That's all you need to know. Now sign those papers!" she screamed back.
"Over my dead body will I sign any of these papers. You all can go to hell!" Ethan spoke with boldness and anger in his eyes.
"Mrs. Amber, I suggest we beat him to pulp, break his tooth and make him suffer for just a few minutes. I believe he will come back to his senses," one of the men suggested, cracking his knuckles hard while Ethan swallowed his spit.
Miss Amber rubbed her forehead before taking out the pistol gun from her holster, aiming right at Ethan's head, watching as his heartbeat increased by the second.
"My master wants your signature on those papers and your wretched ass out of the way. Perhaps with you dead, both will be achieved!" she revealed as she took off the safety pin.
"You won't dare pull the trigger!" Ethan screamed, his heart racing by the second. The air grew thick with tension but he wasn't ready to let his guard down.
But even as fear clawed at him, a stubborn resolve hardened his gaze.
He wasn't ready to surrender, not even one bullet could put down his sheer defiance.
