Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse

Chapter 218: Vanish

If Leng Pan were to land in this place she would freeze everything and shatter the ice. How could these people use living humans as experimental subjects for their selfish research?

Some of the people hanging on the walls were screaming and others begging to be let go.

Some said they had not signed up for torture and wanted to go home. Others seemed to have given up already and accepted their fate.

However, no matter how much they shouted, no one bothered with them. The researchers were busy drawing blood or injecting them with substances that made them wish they could bang their heads against the wall and die due to the pain.

It was a pain that even women who had gone through labor wouldn't want to experience.

The people who had been injected with the substances would feel as if their flesh was being sliced piece by piece and their bones ground with a motor and pestle until it turned into powder.

Others felt as if they had been set on fire and even the blood running through their veins was boiling from the heat. You could imagine such pain.

Normally, even getting burnt by a splash of oil or hot water would send one to the hospital and the pain is unbearable. But at that moment, every part of the body whether inside or outside felt as if it was burning.

It was unimaginable how a human could do something like that to another and against their consent to boot.

As it turned out, the people in that lab acting as test subjects had been brought there through different means.

Some had been abducted while others had been lied to.

The abducted ones had mostly been out looking for supplies when people appeared out of nowhere brandishing weapons and grabbed them then stuffed them into cats before knocking them unconscious.

When they woke up, they were locked in dark rooms and no matter how much they begged or threatened, they were treated as if they were invisible.

Others had been approached with the promise of being given a job because of their special abilities. They were told that they would be given a job of hunting zombies and they would be provided shelter, daily necessities, food, and water.

Their families were even told not to worry and given a large number of supplies.

What they didn't know was that they were selling their loved ones for those supplies.

Once they entered what they were told was their new resident in the base, they were served food and drinks.

Unfortunately, the food had knockout drugs that would knock them out and when they woke up, they were also locked up in small dark rooms.

Some realized their plight immediately and also understood that they would not be let go no matter how much they begged.

One of those people was a twenty-two year old man known as vanish by his friends.

He had always been good at playing hide and seek since he was young. No matter who he played with, they wouldn't be able to find him unless he showed himself.

Even when he grew up, if he wanted to disappear even in a crowd of people, he would.

That was the reason why when he was in his third year of high school, he had been recruited by an underground organization that specialized in infiltration and collecting information.

It was neither an illegal organization nor was it affiliated with the government. However, it worked with government organizations often and helped in gathering information or even rescue operations.

Zai Yeng, aka Vanish was trained by this organization until he perfected his skills. He could infiltrate any place and leave without being discovered or caught.

Maybe it was because of this gift that when the meteorites fell, he gained a superpower similar to his ability.

He could become invisible. At first he was appalled by this superpower because he thought it wouldn't be of any use since it was now the apocalypse and even thieves and murderers didn't need to hide anymore.

But after he was captured and brought to the underground laboratory, he realized that his superpower was useful.

From the conversation between the researchers, he had determined that they were trying to find a way to forcefully awaken superpowers or transfer abilities from other people.

This was practically an abomination. Instead of finding ways to eradicate the zombies virus, these people funded by the military were busy wasting resources doing something outrageous.

With his training, he could have escaped when he was being kidnapped. The people who took him thought that he was just a university student about to graduate when the apocalypse started.

Therefore, they were not on guard. But he figured that if they could abduct him, then they would do the same to others. He wanted to find out where he would be taken and why he was taken in the first place.

He had been there for a week and like everyone else, he had also tasted the pain of his flesh being sliced and bones ground.

But he ensured it and didn't escape immediately because he wanted to get more information.

Moreover, he had been training his ability every chance he got.

Vanish had found out that whatever they were being injected with would hurt like hell, but it would also boast their superpowers.

When he was captured, he could stay invisible for at most, a minute before he ran out of energy and became visible again.

But after a couple of doses of the substances they were injected with, he could already stay invisible for three minutes.

It's just that the researchers didn't seem to have realized that their drug had this effect. They were still busy testing blood and other things to find ways to transfer the abilities.

Vanish found all this laughable. But he decided to endure the pain and wait. He wanted to get a few more doses of that drug. He also wanted to find out where they stored the rest of it or their source so that he could steal it and help others in the future.

For now though, when the drug was injected, he screamed like everyone else and shouted about the pain and wanting to die.
