Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse

The two left on the motorcycles as usual. Only this time they had large backpacks on their backs.

Instead of taking the usual route they normally used when going to the city center to hunt for supplies in huge malls or shops, they went the opposite direction.

Luckily for them, people had become so used to their escapades that nobody paid attention to them anymore.

Unless they came back with a load of supplies like they did the previous day, then people would get curious while others got greedy.

However, after what they had done to those thugs, no one was curious about what they brought home anymore. Unless one was ignorant and wanted to experience a pain that was worse than death, no one would come provoking them.

That was the reason both Leng Pan and her husband felt reassured leaving the elders and Lu Tao behind for a while.

The motorcycles weaved their way through the streets littered with abandoned cars that had been left with some running but had eventually ran out of gasoline.

Others had been abandoned in the middle of the road and some even had been totalled by the falling meteorites.

Some were gore sights to watch because some people had still been in those cars when meteorites fell on top of them and crashed them into meat paste.

It was a sight that would leave a scar in the mind of anyone who saw it. This was a sight that Leng Pan had not seen all this time inside the city.

Was it really possible that other places had cars crashed into scrap metal but the city center didn't? That did not make sense at all.

Something was fishy somewhere. Someone must have either had control over those falling meteorites, or the city had been cleaned immediately after the first wave of meteorites.

Leng Pan leaned more towards the second option because someone controlling falling meteorites was unimaginable.

But, why did they do that? Who cleaned up the unbearable scenes in the city and what was their motive?

The further away they were from the city, the worse the situation looked. She did not understand, were the meteorites organized in a way that would ruin some places completely while others remained in with minimum damage?

The two had planned to switch from motorcycles to a car after pulling a certain distance from the city but it looked like that wasn't going to happen.

They would have to make their journey on motorcycles. Since each person was on their own bike, they couldn't talk. Hence, Leng Pan decided that she would discuss the situation with Lu Zhen once they took a break or arrived at their destination.

As they passed through some densely populated towns, Leng Pan had expected to find many survivors there. But the number of zombies chasing after them was unbelievable.

There were way too many zombies. It looked like many people in these areas didn't survive the first wave of mutation.

Also, it looked like the place with a large number of fallen meteorites also had a proportional number of zombies.

In that case, it looked like what causes the zombie mutation wasn't something in the air but was instead inside the meteorites.

It should be another gas similar to what the meteorite Leng Pan had kept in the space emits.

The purple gas in the meteorite helps to enhance superpowers while the gas in the other ones causes mutation.

After the process, one would either gain superpowers or turn into a zombie.

While it was intriguing to understand how humans gained superpowers, and Leng Pan was sure that research centers had already been set up to conduct studies and understand how a human gained superpowers so that some selfish people in power could benefit, she preferred to take a different direction.

She would have loved to know what type of immune system or antibodies the people who had remained ordinary without being affected by the meteorites like Bai Yinyin had.

How were they able to remain intact without being affected by the gas that came with the meteorites? Maybe if this little detail was understood, there might be hope of reversing the situation and curing people who had yet to mutate into zombies completely in the future.

Unfortunately, people were always selfish and did what benefitted them the most. Especially people in power. They will pump resources into researching things that can bring them wealth and fame.

She was sure that there were already people in government who had already started with research of the zombie virus but were not doing it to help the public.

Instead, they were using resources worth a lot of money to research the transfer of superpowers or forceful awakening.

In the first military base, Commander Qui had put together a team of researchers, most of whom had participated in the experiment on soldiers before.

Soldiers with special abilities such as Blaze, Vortex, Raze, Silk and the rest had been used as experimental subjects to create super soldiers who could contend with advanced weapons.

This had happened long before the apocalypse and when the gas produced by the meteorites entered their bodies, it enhanced the abilities they already had, which is why their current strength was higher than that of other superpower users.

The same research team that had conducted that experiment was now holed up in an underground laboratory with more advanced equipment than the ones they used before.

Unlike when they used soldiers who had volunteered as test subjects because they had been told that their sacrifice was to strengthen the security of the country, the test subjects now were different.

That was because the people locked in isolated rooms in the underground lab were different types of superpower users.

Moreover, there were also zombies at different stages of mutation locked in cages and others chained to the wall.

If anyone stumbled upon this place by mistake, they would be absolutely horrified. That was because the superpower users weren't just locked in solitary rooms, there were some chained to the wall too just like the zombies.
