Reverend Insanity: The Goody Two-Shoes System

Chapter 118: Lightning Lycan King: Part Four

"They are far more organized than I'd thought," one of the Gu Masters near the wall muttered under his breath.

Earlier, when the wolves had attacked, they had attacked as a massive swarm. Organized, but only in the most rudimentary way. Being wild animals, they would sometimes impede each other's attacks or even occasionally small fights would break out between them, even with the authority of a beast king.

However, now they were no longer in a large circle around the village. They were gathered into four neat groups near each of the gates of the village. This was no doubt the work of the Lightning Lycan King.

An army that maintained its formation had the fortitude of stone, while a disorganized army did not even have the permanence of a pile of sand.

Thankfully the formations around the village were still quite inferior to that a human might make. The Lightning Lycan King might have near-human intelligence, but it did not have the tactical genius or expertise of humans.

Still, this was bad news for the village.

New main mission!

Would you choose a man or a bear?

Description: Rescue Gu Yue Yao Le during the upcoming fight.

Reward: Yellow Golden Relic Gu (x 1)

Fang Yuan had lost his chance to get one with Qing Shu's death, but the system had given him another chance to obtain one. The only thing is that he couldn't understand why Gu Yue Yao Le might be in danger in the upcoming fighting given that she should've been working in the medicine hall, though he would keep a close eye on the fighting.

Howl!

The enemy wolves began to advance and the walls were reinforced.

Fang Yuan was still watching from a distance.

Earlier, he would've been unable to do anything against such a foe. Even at Rank 3 it was difficult to make a big difference in the outcome of a fight that was so widespread, unless maybe if he was at Rank 3 Peak Stage and had a complete set of complimentary gu worms.

Rank 4 was a completely different matter altogether. Qing Shu had to sacrifice himself to save the village using Wood Charm Gu, however, Fang Yuan's mere presence on the battlefield could greatly change its outcome.

For one, since he was there, the clan elders could act more freely knowing that they had backup in the form of an extra Rank 4 Gu Master helping them. Because of this, they could be deployed to the front lines earlier, while the Thousand Beast Kings were still holding themselves in the rear.

Second was the morale boost from having Fang Yuan around.

New Main Mission!

Five tigers one lamassu, three hounds one molossus, ten wolves one lycan.

Description: Kill the Lightning Lycan King.

Reward: ???

The third, was Fang Yuan's own battle strength!

He had been holding back in the beginning, but an opening soon appeared in front of him.

It was time for him to use the Rank 4 gu worm that he'd taken from the clan storage.

Pain coursed through his back as thin blades began to emerge, cutting through his robes in the process. Fang Yuan endured this as two pairs of wings erupted from his back.

Rank 4 Lightning Lord Wings Gu!

It was an upgraded version of Lightning Wings Gu, with the main upgrade being that this was a true flying-type gu worm. Lightning Wings Gu could help one fly, but that was closer to flailing about in the air rather than true flight.

The best thing about this gu was that its food was the meat of lightning wolves- which were in great supply currently.

Without a doubt it was a first-class gu worm. The clan only had one in its storage which had been won after a long and difficult battle by a clan head against a Thunder Crown Wolf three hundred years ago and one could only imagine the difficulty in killing that beast if it had this kind of gu worm on itself.

It was valuable to the point that Fang Yuan was sure that if these were ordinary times, even the elders would gather to protest him taking it. But these were not ordinary times.

Even the best gu worm, however, was useless if you didn't know how to use it properly.

Fang Yuan leapt into the air, soaring above the heads of those who were striking out at the tidal wave of wolves at the door.

"Is that Lord Fang Yuan?"

"Is he flying away?'

"Don't be ridiculous, he's going to fight."

"Fang Yuan, what're you doing?" the clan head muttered, seeing Fang Yuan soar out over the enemy. While the wolves were usually limited when it came to long-ranged attacks, the beast kings would have gu worms and the like that could strike at a distance. The Lightning Lycan King, in particular, was already known to have a ranged attack. So why was Fang Yuan risking his life like this? While he was flying, if struck, he would plummet to the earth and would be dead meat for the wolves.

In that case, he wouldn't be able to stand by while of their strongest warriors was attacked. The elders would be forced to sally forth to rescue him, but that would expose multiple flaws in their defense.

Fang Yuan must've known about this- and had also been told about the Lightning Lycan King's attacks, so why had he made this decision.

"This...!" the clan head said, suddenly speechless upon seeing what Fang Yuan was doing. "Such natural-born talent with flying?"

Of all movement-type gu, flying types were the most useful in combat. No matter how good the gu was, if one was bound to the ground they were limited to a two-dimension space while moving about. One could jump, but it was not the same as flying as one could not turn in mid-air.

Flying though- that opened up the entire range of 3-dimensional movement. One could go up, down, left, right, and any other combination of directions in-between.

Of course, flying took practice. Decades of practice even for someone to be good to the point where they could say that they had truly mastered how to fly. Otherwise, like newborn chicks opening their wings for the first time, they were likely to crash down to earth.

Fang Yuan had more than a few decade's worth of experience. Unlike mortal gu masters, all Immortal Gu Masters frequently flew, and so at minimum were masters in flying. Fang Yuan was no exception, and was able to swerve and weave over the heads of the wolf tide, letting out golden moonblades wherever he saw an appropriate target.

His main target, however, was the large wolf at the back. The Lightning Frenzy Wolf, which gnashed its teeth at him and leaped up, though Fang Yuan easily avoided its fangs. At the crest of his ascent, he folded his wings, pirouetting in the air as he fell, releasing two Rank 4 moonblades as he did so.

"Incredible!"

"What kind of talent is that?"

"He can change direction on a whim!"

A satisfying howl of pain reached his ears. Even if it had a defensive-type gu worm, it would not be the match of two Rank 4 moonblades.

Fang Yuan then soared back over the heads of the wolves. The Lightning Lycan King had not seen fit to strike him during this time, but that was why he was keeping his Moonlight Plate Armor Gu in reserve.

He had only killed over a dozen wolves, but they had all been Hundred Beast Kings and the commanding Thousand Beast King.

Was the Lightning Lycan King not here after all? It was a possibility that it had gone for one of the other villages. A Thunder Crown Wolf also had not made an appearance as of yet.

With their leader and a few hundred beast kings dead, this portion of the wolf army began to greatly lose cohesion. Without the Thousand Beast King to worry about, the elders were even more aggressive with their attacks now, beating back the snarling jaws which threatened to tear the wall down. The sheer number of wolves was what was greatly distressing and could possibly cause the village's defenses to collapse, but with the added help from the elders who were now free to act, their numbers began to slowly dwindle.
