Chapter 3: Nerezza Vingar
Worship. Every non heavenly being must worship at least once every two weeks. This is the law put up by heaven that cannot be broken. Most humans in the world worship the goddess. They always have for thousands of years. Every being that's worshipped becomes stronger and stronger as time goes and the number of the worshippers increase.
But I want to take her out. Which means I need to find a way to make them change who they are worshipping. Is that even possible though?. That's what I thought until I found myself in the presence of a king. In the flesh. The joy I felt at that moment was unrivaled.
I walked along the street with no specific destination, looking around trying to find something useful. At the same time, I studied them. Their way of talking, conducting business, how they wore, how they treated each other. It was a site to behold. But I couldn't understand their language and therefore made skill to understand all languages, read and speak them. 'Linguistic'. Then I looked at the buildings and saw one that peaked my interest. It had a sign at the front. The Adventurers' Guild. Perfect.
So I went in knowing exactly what to do, thanks to animes. The place was noisy when I got in but suddenly fell silent as everyone stared at me. I ignored them and walked towards the receptionist.
"Hi there. How can I help you." She said staring up at my face for I was much taller than her at 190cm.
"Can I register as an adventurer."
"Of course. If you would like I'll come with the necessary paperwork." I nodded. Then I looked around. Everyone had their sight set on me. Even those with good looking armor and scary looking large bodies.
"Here's the paperwork. All you have to do is fill in your data and you'll be set u..." She suddenly stopped. Then she looked at me as if she noticed something.
"I'm sorry. You could tell me and I'll write it down for you." She said. I immediately understood.
"I've got it. I can see so, don't worry about it." Then I grabbed the form and started filling it.
The first question was a name. I hated my name in my previous life. It was my mom's idea. I decided to change it and go for something cool that only I would understand and thought I could use my language skill to find names of different languages from the previous world. Some cool names that align with my personality. Something dark and has something to do with revenge. Found it.
Nerezza Vingar.
The rest were normal things for a job application like experience and stuff like that. But there's one question I didn't understand.
"Excuse me miss."
"You can call me Rona"
"Rona, what's 'class'?"
"You mean your ranking?"
"Ranking?"
"Class is the power ranking system put together by heaven. It ranges from E to A class. Then there's S class. Within it, rank E to A. From there is the hero class, the SS class, which is also the maximum for non heavenly beings." Clara said but only I could hear her.
What's mine? "Unknown." What's that supposed mean? "Exactly that. There's no need to explain. If you tell her she'll understand."
"Is it okay to write mine down." 'Could he be afraid to show his class. But he can't be weak. He's so scary looking. Everyone noticed. That's why they keep staring.' She thought.
"Miss?"
"Oh. Of course you can."
So I filled that up and noticed one more question. To list down my skills. And I did but ran out of space and decided to stop there. But I didn't write about my creation skill. No one can know about that. Then I gave back the form and she went through it.
With a shocked face she asked, "Are you a class unknown?" But before I could answer she went through my skills and was stunned by the number of skills I wrote down. "Do you really have this many skills?"
"Y...Yeah. Is there a problem?"
"O...O...Of course not. Please wait here for a moment. I'll be right back." Then she took off to the upstairs office. After a while, she came back and asked me to follow her. We went to that office where there was a huge man with red hair tied in a pony tail, sitting on the other side of a desk.
"Nerezza Vingar, I presume." He said with a vibrating deep voice.
It felt good when he called me that name. "Yes. That's me." After I answered, almost immediately, a magic arrow flew towards my face from the side but I caught it. Then the man turned and looked at the one that fired the arrow.
"What do you think?" The man said.
"I'd ask you the same question." The one who fired the arrow had an invisibility skill and appeared from nothing, wearing a green cloak and answering in a smooth male voice. Then the man looked back at me.
"Apologies for that Mr. Vingar." That didn't march. I was starting to regret the name.
"You can call me Nerezza."
He nodded. "I hope you understand why we did that. Its not everyday one comes across an unknown class."
"Of course. I understand why you shot someone you never met with an arrow out of the blue. Because, why not?"
" I'm the guild leader of this adventurer's guild. Congratulations Nerezza Vingar. You are now an adventurer. I'll assign you with your first guild request immediately." Wow. Right off the bat, huh. "Not far from the city walls, there's a green dragon that decided to make its home there."
"Green dragon?"
"That's right. They are relatively harmless creatures if not messed with. But very powerful."
" Then can't you just let it stay there until it leaves?"
"We can't, because its been there for weeks." Rona said.
"What's so bad about that?"
"Green dragons not only get their name from their appearance but because of their effect on the surroundings." She replied.
"The area around a green dragon is a green field of grass and other healthy plants." The leader said. "This is because the dragon releases its pure mana into its surroundings which is absorbed by other forms of life. This process of mana release is uncontrollable. The dragon therefore needs to replenish its mana. It does this by slowly absorbing the mana from its outer surroundings. But the amount absorbed is very little and is barely noticed most of the times."
"However."
"However, this one's been there for a long time and is absorbing too much. All the plants further away from it have died and the area of effect is slowly increasing and with time, will get to the plantations. Many tried getting rid of it but to no avail. Its too strong. Your task is to kill it."
"Have you tried finding out why its staying there?"
"Even if we do try, its probably just there for no reason. Monsters tend to do that."
"Alright." Something about the way he answered didn't sit well with me. Then again, I did go on a rampage in the forest for dozens of days, killing everything I saw.
"Are you willing to take the task? You will be compensated generously."
"Show me a map."
Then he pulled out a map but in it, there wasn't much forestry.
"Is this a map of the continent?"
"No its of the region of the of the Havvothj'air kingdom that was given to Lord Venheim."
This is only a part of a kingdom? but it looks so big. Even the city is small. How big is this continent. Now that I think about it, when I first arrived to this world, I fell for an unrealistic amount of time. Could this world be bigger somehow. But the gravity is the same as... You know what? This is a fantasy world. Don't ask questions. But I would like a map of the continent.
"Right here." He said while pointing a part of the map outside the city. "This is where it is."
"Okay. I'll be on my way then. One question though. If this is so important, why not band together a group of S class adventurers to take it out?"
"We tried but... They are all incompetent and think that its beneath them. There aren't even that many of them in the city."
"Okay then." I walked out, wondering why they picked me. What is class unknown?
Meanwhile in the guild leader's office, the three of them were waiting for someone to answer through the magic sphere.
"Tell me you have news." A familiar man's voice came through the sphere.
"We think we found him." Said the guild leader.
"I want a sure answer." The voice sounded demanding.
"I sent him to do a task that's close to impossible for a normal adventurer. If he accomplishes it, he's the one. Then we'll bring him in."
"What did you think? Appearance wise?"
"He's not your average person that's for sure. The scars he has would've killed most people. He's different."
"Inform me immediately if he's the one. We don't know if he could be a hero, a demon lord, or even worse."
"As you wish my lord."
Then I walked out of the guild and headed towards the gate.
"Hurry up!" A commanding man's voice echoed around the street.
"You think I feed you once a week for you to be lazy! Walk!" Whips could be heard. I went to take a look and saw, an elf. A beautiful female in sack clothes and had a seemingly weak body, covered in scars and affected wounds. I was shocked by the site as a grumpy looking fat man whipped her. She was carrying a huge sack filled with what looked and sounded like metal bars. That wasn't what shocked me most though.
Other people who were close by either acted as if they don't care or joined the man by throwing stones at her or mocking her. Even the kids. But I did nothing and walked away angrily thinking how is it possible for them to be so cruel? Is that how every human is? I decided to stop thinking about it and went outside the gate.
I walked towards where I was shown on the map and surely enough, the effects of the dragon were very noticeable. The land looked barren. Every plant and tree died. This meant I was getting closer. Then the environment suddenly became greener. It was actually really beautiful. I walked further and further until, I saw it.
The green dragon. A green huge monster that kind off looked like a rhino but with visibly tougher skin. I was wondering why they even called it a dragon since it had no wings. I didn't have time to think about it when it suddenly noticed me and got up. Looking angrily towards me it charged, wanting to attack. I moved out of the way but noticed something felt off.
It only took one glance at me and decided to attack. Even most of the other monsters I came across didn't do that. They usually first observed then attacked. Not attack in a blind rage. We were both in the same position since I didn't know how powerful it was. It might even be more powerful than me.
I wasted no time in attacking. Since I didn't have any weapons it was only me and my one fist, plus a few attack skills. And the brawl began. I tried hitting it at multiple spots with my fist but they did nothing. I put walls around it and tried burning it but to no avail. It simply broke through them. I tried many times, falling a tree on it, attacking it with huge rock spikes, magic blasts and many more. It was a constant cycle of try and error. Luckily, the dragon was slower than me, even though it was moving a bit too fast for its size. I asked Clara for some advice and sure enough, she had some.
"The area just below its eyes haven't been attacked as many times as its other parts. It has, therefore never healed. Healing makes its stronger by adding another layer of skin as many times as its damaged making it tougher than rocks with time. Which means its sensitive. Hit that multiple times and it will have effect."
I did what I was told and hit it below its eye at full force and sure enough, it fell over, exposing its soft under side. Then I made a temporary attack skill that fires powerful energy and aimed for its belly leaving behind a huge hole, killing the monster.
I decided to take a closer look at it and find out why it was that way and my question was soon answered. I headed back to the guild dragging along the dead dragon by the tail with my hand as a hooded figure watched me from the top of a tree.
I walked back to the city gates where the guards were shocked at what I brought back.
"Sir, if you don't mind me asking, what business do you have with that?" One of them asked.
"Its for a guild request from the adventurers' guild." I'm taking it back as proof of my work.
"Ah... R... Right... Go ahead then." I went in. " The guild is going crazy again."
"This time, its worse." The other guard answered.
Meanwhile, I dragged the body through the city, shocking everyone by what they saw. I was just stunned by how wide the road is. Then I got to the guild where it obviously couldn't fit. So I went in by myself.
"Rona. I'm finished with the request."
"Huh? What?" She asked with a puzzled look. "But it hasn't even been a day yet. You walked all the way there, killed it and walked back already?
"Oh... I also came with proof that I finished the work. Right outside is the dragon's corpse."
"WHAT!"
There was a large crowd outside the guild making a lot of noise, confirming the corpse outside. Then the guild leader came down the stairs laughing hysterically. Everyone was shocked that the guild leader was laughing.
"Well done." He said. "You've impressed me. As promised. 1200 gold coins." He placed a heavy sack on the reception table. But somehow, the amount sounded small, not that I was interested in the money. After all, I don't eat and I haven't been able to sleep since I came to this world.
'Is the money not enough?' He thought while observing me as I didn't make any expression. 'No. That's not it. He's not interested in the money. Maybe he really is a selfless hero.'
What's the value the of money in this world anyway? Then I remembered I brought something else.
"There's something I need to show you." I pulled something out of a dimension skill that can store up things. "This was on it."
The receptionist and the guild leader were shocked. It was an ankle chain. A big one that had an emblem on it, probably to show that the beast that is caught is the property of someone or, a nation.
"That's the emblem of... Hmm... Congratulations Nerezza Vingar. You can now have an audience with the king."
King?
The people in the guild were shocked that I get an audience with the king on my first day of being an adventurer.
"Get ready. We are heading for the capital using the city's teleportation circle. Right now."
Huh? That can't be right. This is going way too fast. Something's off.
"Come along now."
And just like that, we were off to the capital. No planning, no making appointment. We just, went. Clearly he's been waiting for this. We went to the teleportation circle near the city gate, stood on it then it glowed a beautiful blue color and we were off. We appeared at another city, a much bigger and more lively one. The capital.
We walked towards the castle in the middle of the city as I looked at how the people appeared wealthier with stylish clothing.
"Is everyone here a noble. They all have significantly better clothes." I asked.
"That's not it at all. The economy in the capital is thriving. There hasn't been any inflations for many years. Almost everyone is either wealthy or living a decently comfortable life. This place must be great to live in being safe and..." As he said this, I was looking at him and realized that he's a pretty normal guy, not like others. So there are normal people in this world.
As he was talking, an elf slave carrying a jar of wine bumped into him, spilling the content on him. Then a man came behind running towards us and apologized for what the elf did and punched her multiple times.
I looked at the guild master and said, "Hey aren't you gonna..."
"You wretched elf!" Huh? "How dare you spill wine on me!" Then he kicked the elf with such force that she flew away. "Grr. Come on lets go." I watched him walk away and clenched my fist in anger but didn't show it through my face. Nor did I have any thoughts in my head. Then he called out to me and I went.
After a while we got at the gate of the palace where we were welcomed as special guests.
"We've arrived. Don't worry about etiquette. This is an informal meeting, even though its been held at the throne room."
"Announcing the arrival of guild master Suvaltner of the qanto region adventurers' guild and the adventurer, Nerezza Vingar!" A guard shouted while we were outside of a big door. Then the door opened and we walked in.
It was a straight hall decorated with expensive ornaments and had a red carpet on the middle. On the sides of the carpet were many nobles with luxurious clothes looking at me curiously while murmuring, "Is that him? He's so scary looking. Is he blind? How can he see. How powerful is he?"
Then I came to the end of the hall where there was a golden throne. Seated on it was a slightly old looking man with a normal body figure wearing a crown, a red robe and expensive jewelry. Next to him was a standing huge man wearing armor.
Then the guild master knelt down on one knee. I followed suit. Informal meeting he said.
"Allow me to welcome you to the capital city, Nerezza Vingar." The king said. "I am the king of the Havvothj'air kingdom."
I didn't know what to do or say. So I kept looking down then suddenly realized something. Would you look at that. This is the exact situation I was hoping to find myself in. That was easier than I thought. What to do now.
What else could I have done, but have a big smile on my face.
