Volume 2 Chapter 11
“Is that possible, meow?”
“The probability is not high, only about 20% even with a medium’s support. But if they keep predicting, they will eventually locate you. I guess that guy is currently struggling with which guild to accept benefits from and whom to leak information to…”
We could simply assassinate the player skilled in astrology.
Though I said this, Trafalgar’s warning was clear: [Astrology] is a skill that poses a serious threat to Lily’s safety. Killing a player who can resurrect is a troublesome issue.
“Anna sister.”
“Lily…?”
Lily, who had been hiding in the cabin, suddenly emerged, followed by Siegdeletha, who gave me an apologetic look.
With unprecedented determination, Lily turned to the surprised Trafalgar and spoke.
“Baron Trafalgar, I will, tell everyone the truth I’ve seen.”
Trafalgar was slightly shocked, halting his departure.
Did she decide this after hearing our conversation? Does Lily have her own thoughts?
“The Duke Borgia I first knew… was like Baron Trafalgar… a hero who protected the Kingdom of Michael, a gentle and powerful noble who loved his people. You know, Duke Borgia, he helped homeless children.”
“Were you also a child helped by Duke Borgia?”
Trafalgar had mentioned that Duke Borgia, no longer able to fight, started dedicating himself to helping homeless children in his domain.
“Yes… I was taken care of by priests and nuns in the church… but later, Duke Borgia’s messengers took us away, saying they could provide us with better homes and nurture us into useful people.”
Lily had told Siegdeletha about this. Siegdeletha and I had suspected the church of harming Lily, but in Lily’s memory, the priests and nuns were kind, providing her with food and shelter.
Helping the suffering is the church’s duty, but the financial resources of churches are limited. While homeless adults can be taught to work, homeless children rely solely on the church for upbringing, which is no small burden.
Duke Borgia’s offer to take care of homeless children was a relief for the church, and with his personal reputation as a guarantee, he was undoubtedly the best choice.
“I have heard of it.”
Trafalgar acknowledged Lily’s statement.
“Duke Borgia claimed he was training the next generation of warriors to fight the undead. We all thought that with children’s company, Duke Borgia could recover from the loss of all his offspring.”
“The Duke… took us to his Réunion Castle…”
I quietly moved beside Lily, who reflexively grasped my hand.
“There, my friends and I… everyone… had a great time… Everyone said Duke Borgia was a good person… When we grow up… we wanted to repay him…”
Noticing Lily’s cold sweat, Trafalgar’s firmness wavered for the first time.
Why would Duke Borgia terrify a child like this? He must have had similar doubts.
“One day, my friend disappeared. Everyone said she went to receive Duke Borgia’s guidance. But I never saw my friend again. Then, not long after, another friend went to see Duke Borgia… The third friend too, but none of them came back, and Duke Borgia wouldn’t tell me where they went.”
“…”
“I… was scared, wanted to leave the castle, but the servants coaxed me back, telling me not to leave. I was really scared… and then, every day, I thought about how to leave. I didn’t want to stay there anymore. I heard from the servants’ conversations about something called… scroll, scroll…”
“Scroll.”
I reminded her.
My guess was right; Lily used a space-transferring scroll in her escape.
“The thing Sister Anna mentioned, something powerful, that could let me escape the castle. I didn’t sleep at night, quietly stealing a scroll…”
Lily’s teeth chattered uncontrollably; she hadn’t completely recovered from that day’s terror.
“I saw… I saw… everyone, but they all… became so terrifying… turned into… gruesome monsters…!”
“…?!”
“They saw me too, walking towards me… I called their names, but they seemed not to hear… Everyone was pale, my friends who loved playing hide-and-seek and climbing trees, their movements became stiff… Their bodies… were cold…”
“Undead zombies? This can’t be!!!”
Trafalgar, who had experience fighting the undead, exclaimed in shock, causing the frightened Lily to burrow into my arms, sobbing softly.
“Baron Trafalgar, please mind your behavior.”
“Ha…! Are you saying… Duke Borgia is creating zombies in his own castle? He is a hero of the Kingdom of Michael!”
Siegdeletha suddenly spoke: “Are you suggesting that everything Lily said is a lie? Lily is terrified every night. Anna has been protecting this child. Yet, Duke Borgia still won’t let her go, even mobilizing his entire duchy to hunt her down!”
“You don’t understand Duke Borgia at all!”
“I ask you! When was the last time you saw Duke Borgia? Those children taken in by Duke Borgia, has anyone seen them since?”
