Volume 2 Chapter 10
Baron Trafalgar set forth his condition and waited earnestly for my response.
“I have no right to refuse.”
“So you mean…”
“But please allow me to sincerely apologize, I cannot answer Baron Trafalgar’s question.”
“…Is there a reason you can’t speak of it?”
I shook my head. “I don’t know the reason.”
Trafalgar was at a loss for words, and Carol Cat beside me looked equally baffled.
“Meow… Is this, a joke in Miss Anna’s style?”
“Regrettably, it’s the truth.”
I couldn’t explain this issue because I am merely a maid.
Trafalgar and Carol Cat found it hard to believe.
“Not knowing… then why would you help Amalilis? There’s no benefit in it, right?”
“Baron Trafalgar, I have little understanding of the adventurer’s task system. May I ask you, do all issued tasks yield rewards?”
Instead of answering directly, I posed another question to Trafalgar.
“No, there are tasks where the input and gain are not proportional, and some that are completely unprofitable.”
“Just like meow, some NPCs specifically deceive adventurers, you can’t just mindlessly accept tasks like in other games…”
Carol Cat chimed in, looking indignant. Perhaps she had been tricked by an NPC before.
“If you choose to investigate the truth behind Duke Borgia’s pursuit of Lily instead of arresting Lily to complete the task, are the rewards equivalent?”
“Maybe not, there might be no reward at all…”
Trafalgar paused.
Despite this, Trafalgar still chose to forego the substantial task rewards, leaning towards investigating the truth behind Duke Borgia, even though the task rewards were almost within his reach.
It is said that during the era of client-based games, a video circulated on the internet. It was set in a game with a thieving skill, where a player sneaked into the home of a not-so-wealthy NPC family to steal. Although the family of three was dining in the living room, the player’s skills were high, and he quickly pocketed valuable items without their knowledge.
As the player prepared to leave, he overheard the NPCs talking. The child complained about having to eat potatoes every day, and the mother comforted the child, saying that everyone was striving for the happiness of their home and that better days would come. The father then asked the child if he had stolen apples from the neighbor’s house. The child timidly admitted to it, and the mother sighed, saying she would apologize with potatoes the next day. The father solemnly taught the child that although they were poor, it didn’t mean they should do wrong.
Players reacted differently to this scene.
Some scoffed and left through the window.
Some felt uncomfortable for a while, but nothing changed after some time.
However, some players thought about it, returned all the items, and left a small bag of gold coins on the desk.
Even though they were playing the same game, players’ reactions to the same situation varied. Some actions might be purely unprofitable for players, like leaving behind a small bag of gold coins, but some players are still willing to do so.
Baron Trafalgar cared about the reasons behind Duke Borgia’s time-limited task more than the apparent rewards, as if he were worried about a real friend rather than a bunch of data offering rewards.
Not having a reward is not a reason for me not to act. Seeing Lily unconscious and severely injured, I chose to save her, unrelated to any potential reward, simply because I felt it was the right thing to do.
Trafalgar smiled wryly and held his forehead, the atmosphere turning awkwardly silent.
“The Eternal Pacificus,” a game that emphasizes immersion, naturally attracts players like Trafalgar.
“…It seems I made a wasted trip.”
Trafalgar stood up, dusting off his clothes.
“Let’s leave it at that then. I won’t reveal your location. But I advise you to consider moving.”
“Thank you for your advice. May I know the reason?”
“Meow? I didn’t betray Miss Anna, meow!”
Carol Cat raised her hands in a gesture of innocence, but Trafalgar didn’t pay her any attention.
“The reward is too generous. Players with the rare skill of [Astrology] are about to visit the Duke’s territory.”
“That skill exists, meow?”
“Lord Carol Cat, [Astrology] is an extremely rare skill, only obtainable through special encounters, and cannot be taught to others.”
Astrology, a divination method using the understanding of celestial movements to foretell someone’s destiny, is not even among my skills.
“Really, meow?”
Carol Cat was still skeptical. Astrology, in a way, is like a hidden profession in other online games, but its acquisition is only more challenging.
“Think about it, of course astrology is a rare skill. Otherwise, why wouldn’t the Duke just find someone with astrology skills to divine Amalilis’ location instead of setting up barriers?”
“Ow, meow!”
Trafalgar’s mockery of Carol Cat’s intelligence seemed to have hit a nerve, and she immediately went on the defensive again.
“The guy visiting the Duke’s territory with astrology skills is only at the Master level. Even so, he is revered as a master of astrology. Being at the Master level… would that be impressive in other skills? Because astrologers are so rare, adventurers who learn to the Master level dare to show off. They probably want to use astrology to pinpoint your exact location.”
