Chapter 38: Ra vs Set( edited)
The Solar Barge glides across the black void of the Cosmic Sea. Below, stars shimmer like scattered embers, and above, the ominous swirl of chaos looms, where Apophis, the great serpent of destruction, writhes in the distance. The glow of the barge's golden sails flickers against the dark horizon.
Standing at the helm is Ra, the Sun God, seated on steps leading to his throne, his spear of solar fire resting at his side. His face is weathered with both wisdom and sorrow.
Suddenly, a figure strides aboard—Set.
Set looms as a towering black Jackal-headed figure, his crimson eyes gleaming with malevolent intensity. His dark gold highlights shimmer faintly under the dim light, and the stiff, metallic wings folded against his back glint ominously. The air around him is heavy with divine power, vibrating with barely contained chaos.
Set's stiff, metallic wings begin to fold inward, clanking and grinding like ancient, war-forged machinery. They retract into the armor plating along his back with a metallic hiss, leaving faint sparks as they lock into place. The air around him momentarily shudders as the weight of his divine energy begins to diminish.
The crimson glow surrounding his body flickers erratically, like a dying flame. Wisps of dark energy spiral outward, dissipating into the air. His radiant dark gold highlights dull, turning a tarnished bronze before fading entirely.
Cracks form along Set's armor-like body, glowing faintly with red light before shattering into fragments that dissolve into shimmering particles. The jackal head contorts and shrinks, the elongated muzzle retracting, while the sleek, black metallic surface melts away like liquid shadow.
As the divine plating dissolves, Set's human skin reappears underneath, smooth and untouched. His muscular frame loses its massive, hulking build, shrinking back to a more compact, human size.
Set's piercing crimson eyes fade to a grey, the fiery glow extinguishing like embers cooling after a blaze. His expression shifts from fierce dominance to cold, calculating control.
A deep, guttural hum echoes briefly before fading into silence. The last remnants of divine energy dissipate from the air, leaving only a faint shimmer around Set's figure.
Set studying Ra, voice cold but calm."Father."
Ra looks up, his eyes like twin suns. He surveys Set with a mixture of sadness and with restrained anger."I've seen your tower... Impressive."
Set nods, a smirk playing on his lips."I built it for you."
Ra smriked."If it were any higher, it would stand in my way."
Set's smile fades. He moves to the edge of the barge, gazing down at Earth, its lands spread below like a tapestry of sand, rivers, and life, gesturing to the world below."Turn your gaze from your sails, Father, and behold what I have accomplished. What Osiris never could. Soon, I will rule everything that breathes... and everything that receives breath."
Ra frowning, his voice firm."No one is more powerful than the sun, Set."
Set turning back, defiant."Then honor me as I have honored you."
Ra rises from the steps, stepping forward and with a stern tone."If honoring me was your intent, you would not have tried to murder your brother."
Set's composure cracks. He strides toward Ra, his voice sharp and accusing."You see everything that happens down there. Tell me, Father... Do you even care?"
Ra stepping closer, voice low but heavy."I care more than you think."
Set circles his father, his anger boiling over."Then why did you cast me out? To walk the burning sands while Osiris played barefoot along the Nile? Why did you crown him?"slowly tone became more angry."Why did you give him a son while denying me the chance to create life?"
Set halts, his eyes burning with hatred."You've given me nothing but rejection. Nothing but ashes."
Ra meets his son's glare, his voice unyielding."Everything I denied you was a test."
Set laughs bitterly."A test? You didn't test him."
Ra calmly explained."I gave Osiris gave the throne of Egypt. And when the time came, he did not cling to power. He gave it away freely. He passed his test."
Set steps closer, his voice slightly cold."And I wager, I passed mine."
Ra shook his head and said."Not yet. It is true.I did not want you to have children. It was an act of generosity. I did not want you to miss them, like me."
Set hesitates, confusion flickering across his face."Missing them?"
Ra gazing at Set, his eyes filled with a mix of hope and sorrow. "I need you to take my place."
Set frowning, his gaze drifting to the endless expanse of the Solar Barge, its sails glimmering faintly."Here?"
Ra slowly steps closer, his voice soft but firm."This is where your test ends, my son."
Ra gently places a hand on Set's cheek, his voice trembles slightly, laden with emotion."There is no greater burden... nor greater honor. Everything you have done—every sin can be forgiven."
Set his voice trembling with disbelief, stepping back, pulling Ra's hand away."You expect me to... fight against this beast... night after night... until I die?"
Ra's expression hardens, a glimmer of disappointment mingling with frustration. A reminder of Merlin's words, forewarning Set's selfishness.
Ra his tone sharp, testing his son's resolve."What is it you want, Set?"
Set his glare burning with defiance and yelled."Immortality."
Ra scoffs, folding his arms."Immortality awaits us all in the ancestral plane."
Set his voice rising, fury spilling over."I do not want to die! I want to live. Forever. On the lands I have conquered. In my kingdom. That is my reward!"
Ra's quietly, almost to himself."How?... The only way is unthinkable... You'd have to consume—"
Set cutting in, his voice sharp as a blade."The ancestral plane."
Ra's golden eyes narrow as he steps closer,
he sternly, almost pleading."It wouldn't work. Every pantheon will rise against you. Also, also destroying the ancestral plane would destroy everything."
Set taking a step forward, his tone dark and commanding."Not destroy. Reshape. I will conquer every god, tear down their shrines, bend their will to mine."
Set's voice drops, laced with venom, as he turns toward the glowing horizon."I will take your place. But it will not be in this wretched boat."
Set draws his khopesh, its blade gleaming with divine light. Ra's sorrow gives way to resolve as he lifts his spear from his hips, transforming into his godly form—blazing with golden light.
He wears a tall, elaborate headdress adorned with Egyptian-inspired designs, including a central red gemstone and golden symbols that resemble the sun and cosmic elements.
The headdress radiates light and energy, enhancing the character's godlike presence.
His outfit has transformed into a more ceremonial or more divine attire. The black collar is now golden and glowing, intricately detailed with hieroglyphs and symbols.
His torso is clad in a golden chest piece, further emphasizing his celestial and powerful stature.
He is now engulfed in golden flames that ripple and shimmer, giving the impression of pure energy rather than destructive fire.
Ra pointing his spear at Set, a searing blast of solar fire erupts from Ra's spear, engulfing Set in a torrent of blazing flames. The deck of the Solar Barge trembles beneath the onslaught.
Ra watching with a mix of shock, sadness and grim resolve as the flames consume Set and thought."This is your end, my son."
But within the inferno, Set's form begins to change—a metamorphosis into his true godly state. His metallic, jackal-headed form radiates with a fierce red glow, defying the flames that seek to consume him.
Knowing the full force of Ra's attack would have annihilated any lesser god, Set raises the Shield of Osiris—a magnificent bronze shield adorned with ancient glyphs that shimmer with protective energy. A blue aura surrounds Set as the shield deflects the scorching blaze.
As the flames subside, Set stands defiantly, his eyes blazing with newfound power.
Ra staring in disbelief."No god could withstand that..."
Set smirking, his voice dripping with arrogance."I am not just one god."
Seizing the moment, Set charges forward with his khopesh, the blade slicing through Ra's defenses. He drives the weapon deep into Ra's chest, his father's golden form staggering back in shock.
Set coldly, wrenching the spear from Ra's grasp."You taught me well, Father."
With a swift, decisive motion, Set turns Ra's own weapon against him, casting the Sun God into the churning Waters of Creation below. The once-golden figure of Ra vanishes beneath the waves, believed dead by his own son's hand.
Set looks at the Spear of Ra and breathing heavily, standing alone on the deck, his gaze fixed on the horizon."Now, to unseal Ammit."
