Reincarnated In Attack On Titan World As Nobody

Chapter 42

"Come on," Levi said evenly, his sharp eyes fixed on him. "Let me see what progress you've made."

Since Lock had already issued the challenge, there was no turning back. For Levi, that only meant one thing—he had to crush this stubborn kid before his arrogance grew any further. Better Lock learned the truth here than outside the walls.

Lock tightened his fists, his voice steady.

"I won't let you down, Captain."

He sprang forward, boots scraping against the training yard's dirt, and threw the first punch.

Their fists collided with a dull crack. The impact rattled up both their arms.

Lock staggered back four steps.

Levi slid back two.

The difference was clear—but it wasn't as wide as Levi expected.

Lock steadied himself quickly, his eyes blazing with determination. Inwardly, Levi was more unsettled than he let on.

It's only been a few weeks… and already this much improvement? This kid's growth rate is terrifying.

Lock pressed the attack, dropping low and snapping into a whip kick. Levi leaned aside, nimble as ever, and countered with a sweep. Lock barely managed to vault over it, only to find Levi already on top of him again.

Back and forth they went, fists and feet a blur, neither side giving an inch.

Lock knew the truth, though. To the others watching, it might look like a stalemate. But he could feel the weight behind every strike—Levi was still controlling the pace, waiting for the smallest mistake to punish. Lock's body burned from the strain, but his mind refused to yield.

I can't show weakness. Not here. Not against him.

And yet, Levi was frowning. He had sparred countless times, seen endless trainees come and go, but this boy's raw potential… his instincts, his speed, the way he adapted mid-fight—it was unlike anything he'd seen before.

This isn't just talent. This is something else.

Deciding there was no more room for half-measures, Levi shifted his stance. His strikes became sharper, faster, and the gap between them grew wider. The so-called stalemate snapped in an instant.

Lock's guard bent under the relentless barrage. Pain shot through his forearms and legs with every block. He knew he couldn't hold on forever.

So he gambled. Instead of retreating, he lunged forward, aiming for a decisive strike.

Levi's eyes narrowed. "Too obvious."

His boot lashed out, catching Lock square in the ribs.

"Bang—"

Lock hit the ground hard, air rushing from his lungs. The sun glared down on him, fractured through the drifting mist above the yard. For a moment, he just lay there, chest heaving, tasting the grit of dirt between his teeth.

"…Lost again," he muttered.

Levi stepped forward, his shadow cutting across the boy's face. Arms folded behind his back, his expression as cold as ever, he said:

"You're still a long way off, kid."

Somehow, standing over him, Levi's slight frame seemed taller than any Titan.

But Lock wasn't broken. Gritting his teeth, he pushed himself up, brushing dust from his uniform.

"I'll win it back next time." His voice was steady, almost defiant. "When there's no mission, Captain… I want to spar with you every day."

Levi's hands twitched faintly behind his back. His first instinct was to refuse—too much trouble, too much risk of injury. But then he remembered Erwin's words and Keith's insistence about the boy's potential. And when he looked into Lock's eyes—serious, burning, relentless—he exhaled slowly.

"…We'll see."

Lock smiled faintly. "Thank you."

"Tch. What a pain," Levi muttered, his lips curving almost imperceptibly before his face returned to its usual blank mask.

The two walked back toward the edge of the yard.

Behind them, Petra, Eld, Gunther, and Oruo stood frozen. They had all seen Levi fight. They had all witnessed the strength that earned him his title. But seeing a fourteen-year-old boy push him that far—it was almost unthinkable.

And though Lock himself couldn't see it, they noticed the slight tremor in Levi's fingers as he clasped his hands behind his back.

In silence, the four exchanged glances. The respect they held for Lock shifted subtly, rising into something deeper.

This boy was different.
