Chapter 41
"Going outside the Walls again…"
The dining room fell silent. Oruo stopped halfway through a boast, Petra's gentle smile faded, Eld frowned, and even the dependable Günther's expression tightened.
Among them, Lock saw something none of them admitted aloud—fear.
Of course they were afraid. Every soldier knew what leaving the Walls meant. Beyond the gates was not freedom, but the Titans. And while their captain sat with his usual grim composure, Lock understood Levi Ackerman wasn't made of stone. The man cared deeply for his squad, and that was exactly why they had survived countless expeditions—until, years from now, fate would betray them.
Lock exhaled slowly, steadying himself. He had always known this day would come, but now that it was here, a ripple of unease spread through him. For all his training, all his preparation, could he truly face the Titans?
He clenched his fists beneath the table. He had sacrificed too much to falter now. While others slept, he had trained. While others laughed, he had sharpened his body and mind. Every drop of sweat was a step toward this moment—the chance to stand against the monsters that caged humanity.
There was no turning back.
A sudden weight landed on his shoulder. Lock turned to see Oruo smirking at him.
"Rookie, don't tell me you're scared already?"
"I'm not," Lock shot back, cheeks burning. "Don't talk nonsense."
Three denials, and Petra's laughter bubbled out like bells. Eld chuckled, and even Günther cracked a grin. For the first time that morning, the tension eased. Levi's lips didn't move, but Lock could have sworn his captain's eyes softened for a heartbeat.
Oruo winked. "That's better. No shame in nerves—but you'll do fine."
Lock blinked, realizing the older soldier's teasing wasn't cruelty but comfort. Beneath his arrogance, Oruo's heart was warmer than he let on.
Soon the laughter faded, and all eyes turned to Levi. The captain finished his bite of bread before speaking.
"The commander and his staff have spent four months preparing this expedition. It begins in four days. Tomorrow, we ride to Shiganshina to resupply. After that—we leave the Walls."
"Four days…" Eld muttered, brows furrowing.
Levi nodded. "That's all the time you have. Prepare yourselves. We move at dawn."
No one pressed him for details. Orders were orders. They were soldiers, not strategists.
Lock's pulse quickened. Four days. Four days until he would see the Titans with his own eyes.
But before dread could tighten its grip again, he stood and faced his crew, a captain
"Captain Levi—I want to challenge you."
The room froze. Levi looked up at him with that same unreadable face, though Lock thought he caught the flicker of a sigh.
"…You're persistent."
Lock didn't flinch. "I've already beaten Oruo."
Levi's eyes slid to Oro, who grimaced and gave a reluctant nod.
The captain pinched the bridge of his nose. "You brats will be the death of me…"
Still, refusing would make him look cowardly before his squad. With the faintest shrug, Levi rose to his feet. "Fine. If you think you're ready—prove it."
Excitement surged through Lock's chest. This was the test he had long awaited.
Oruo and Petra exchanged looks, their grins saying this should be good. Eld and Günther whispered behind them, debating the outcome.
"Do you think Lock stands a chance?"
"Against Captain Levi? Not likely. But… he's strong. Stronger than most."
"And yet," Günther added with a small smile, "no one's stronger than Levi."
Oruo grumbled, "Remind me to hate all of you later."
Their banter carried them out of the hall, until they reached the training yard. There, under the gray morning sky, Lock and Levi faced one another across the packed earth.
The squad fell quiet. No one doubted the outcome, but still—they leaned forward, eager to see how far the rookie could push humanity's strongest soldier.
Lock squared his stance, fire in his eyes. For him, this wasn't about victory. It was about proving he could stand on the same ground.
And Levi, arms loose at his sides, simply waited.
The duel was about to begin.
