Chapter 80: Volume 1: Chapter 81 - Holy Sword, Unsheathed
The first hound attacked from the front, the second leaped into the air, and the third approached from the side, running along the inner wall of the train car!
Although Touko was puzzled as to why the boy suddenly possessed such power, those questions could wait until this was all over.
Reason and rationality instantly took over her mind. Without any Mystic Codes or magical tools on hand, and with no time to prepare more powerful offensive spells, Touko could only choose to use magic bullets to cover the boy.
Swish, swish, swish. The magic bullets fired from the girl's fingertips shot straight toward the three hounds.
Due to the confined space created by their simultaneous attack, this time, one of the magic bullets finally managed to hit the hound approaching from the side, obstructing it for a moment and buying the boy a fraction of a second to react.
However, it's possible that the girl's deliberate assistance wasn't even necessary. Aozaki Rin's speed was already astonishingly fast.
Almost at the very instant the three hounds burst forth from the man's body, he had already sprung into action.
Bending his body slightly forward, he met the hound coming from the front with a direct knee strike to its head, crushing it into a shattered sludge on the floor.
Aozaki Rin used the momentum to leap up and deliver a powerful uppercut to the hound pouncing from above, punching through its abdomen and reducing it back to a pool of filth.
But in that instant, the hound that had turned into black sludge did not explode and scatter as before. Instead, its entire body writhed, sprouting countless sharp spikes that shot straight toward the boy's chest and abdomen.
And at the same time, the hound from the side kicked off with all four feet, leaped into the air, and opened its fanged maw, aiming for the boy's waist!
"Rin!"
For a moment, rationality was overwhelmed by emotion. Touko forced herself to calm down, immediately firing several more magic bullets from her hand. Her body instinctively wanted to rush forward to protect the boy, and at the same time, she regretted her own carelessness.
Even though she was always within the Aozaki family's domain, protected by its wards and her grandfather's reputation which deterred outside magi, she shouldn't have gone out without any preparations. This could be considered her own laxity, a mark of her being an unqualified magus.
However, regret at this moment could not change reality. What no one expected was that at the very moment the girl's body was about to lunge forward, a sound like a sharp blade cutting through the air suddenly rang out.
In the next instant, the boy, who should have been assailed by the thorny sludge and the hound from the side, simply swung his arm through the air. All that remained around him was a ring of black sludge, expanding outward in a shockwave and scattering into the air!
The boy's arm was completely unharmed, though his sleeve had been torn in several places by the black sludge spikes.
His right arm hung slightly downward, his five fingers held straight and together like a blade, angled toward the air like an invisible sword.
"The way of the sword... Don't tell me you forgot to bring your sword, so you're just using your arm as one instead?"
The black sludge scattered in the air instantly retracted into the man's body. If the boy shattering the familiar created from the [Primal Womb] within his body with a single punch had only left him slightly surprised, then now, the Dead Apostle known to the Holy Church as Nero Chaos was genuinely astonished.
After all, he had never expected that the Aozaki family, known for producing Magicians, had also, in this generation, raised a specialist in physical combat.
But although the boy's technique seemed astonishing, in the end, it was just a physical body.
No matter how skilled he was with a sword in the past, right now, he couldn't possibly unleash even a tenth of his original ability.
Of course, even if the boy did have a sword in hand, Nero Chaos would not have felt any different. Because the power the boy had displayed was, in his eyes, still too weak.
Up to this point, he had not changed his objective of capturing Aozaki Touko, nor had he gotten serious.
But...
Estimating that the train was about to arrive at the next station, to avoid attracting that swarm of Executors who were like flies drawn to the scent of blood, Nero Chaos didn't want to waste any more time.
After all, he had other objectives to carry out in this land.
Taking a step forward, the man said nothing. The action alone was enough to announce everything. The scent of blood on his body grew stronger at this moment, and within his sturdy frame, it was as if countless creatures were devouring and fighting each other. For a moment, his human form blurred and lost its shape, only to return to normal in the next second, everything returning to stillness.
However, this was not the end, but the sounding of the horn for the beginning.
After a brief moment of silence, a dozen or more monstrous beasts of different shapes and sizes were birthed from the man's body, instantly filling the train corridor, crowding, deforming, merging, roaring... they shrieked and charged toward where Aozaki Rin stood!
But at this moment, the boy, much like Touko behind him, seemed to be frozen by this nightmarish scene.
Yet, compared to being spiritually scattered by the shock of the situation, Aozaki Rin, in this instant, seemed to be savoring a memory, standing perfectly still.
After all, when he had swung his arm earlier, he had subconsciously used the swordsmanship he had employed with Durandal in his dream.
Although he held no blade in his hand, the moment he swung his arm, he felt as if he were holding a sword.
He knew that such a thought was just his own delusion, perhaps even irrational. But his inner intuition told him that nothing was impossible.
—Who says one cannot use a sword technique without a sword in hand? Is that common sense, or a limitation?
The concept blurred in his mind. Aozaki Rin couldn't help but take a slight deep breath. He took a step back, as if to steady his stance.
He looked up, and the arm that had been held tense now bent slightly, as if sheathing a blade. In his unfocused golden eyes, fine, thread-like mysterious patterns appeared, seeming to form some kind of strange design, yet hidden deep within.
Sensing the ferocious aura and foul breath of the dozen beasts surging toward him, the boy merely parted his thin lips slightly, as if opening some kind of restriction.
With a motion as light as a flowing stream of light, he swept his arm through the air.
"—Holy Sword, Unsheathed!"
Countless flashes of sword light cut through the air, slicing all the black sludge beasts into pieces, and cleaving the train car itself in two!
The sword light continued to spread forward. In an instant, the entire front half of the train was torn apart, and with a loud BOOM, it crashed into the remaining, still-moving section!
