Chapter 70: Volume 1: Chapter 71 - Can We Sleep Together Tonight?
The heavy rain continued to fall, bringing an unexpected coolness to the otherwise hot summer day.
Inside the living room, a faint aroma of soy sauce still lingered in the air. The television was playing the currently popular drama "Fierce Colt," which seemed to be about the story of a family around the time of the Meiji Restoration.
However, as he was unable to see, and could only make out the outline of the television even with his glasses on, Aozaki Rin could only understand the general plot through sound. Aozaki Aoko, who was currently holding him in her lap, would occasionally explain some of the plot points to help him better understand.
It was already past eight o'clock in the evening.
As for the siblings' dinner, due to a certain young lady's lack of culinary skills, they could only resort to the simplest option: a sukiyaki hot pot.
Relying on a sauce bought from a convenience store and whatever ingredients were already in the refrigerator, even if it was all just thrown together, the taste couldn't be too bad.
As for the boy's other older sister, Aozaki Touko, due to her coursework in magecraft research, she very rarely left her magus's workshop in the mountains. Even her daily meals, washing up, and resting were all done within the workshop. She generally wouldn't make a special trip home to prepare meals for the two of them.
Of course, occasionally, Aozaki Rin would also stay with Aozaki Touko in the magus's workshop.
Although this way of family life was a little strange, it had been this way for as long as the boy could remember, and he had long since come to accept it as natural.
The television drama unknowingly reached its end. Aozaki Aoko's delicate chin rested lightly on the boy's small head. As she held Aozaki Rin, she casually pressed a button on the remote control to change the channel, happening to land on an international news report.
—[Breaking News. An explosion of unknown origin has occurred at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Fortunately, the explosion did not result in any casualties, and the related damages are still being assessed. According to a responsible official, it is highly likely that the explosion was caused by a natural gas leak...]
"To think that even a place like a church could have an explosion, that's really dangerous..."
Muttering to herself, Aozaki Aoko didn't pay much attention to this news and immediately switched to an educational channel about the history of rock music.
Aozaki Rin knew that his sister's interests lay in this area; she even had an electric guitar and an amplifier in her room that she had bought with money from a part-time job.
Under Aozaki Aoko's influence, he wasn't uninterested in the subject either. It was just that he happened to hear the words "England" and "Britain" in the documentary's narration, and thoughts of the dream were suddenly stirred up from the bottom of his heart again.
And so, after a moment's hesitation, Aozaki Rin turned his head slightly and asked the girl behind him.
"Sister, have you ever heard of... King Arthur?"
"King Arthur?"
Aozaki Aoko was taken aback, not understanding why such a term would suddenly come from the boy's mouth.
However, after frowning for a moment, she spoke as if trying to recall something, her tone uncertain.
"I seem to remember he's a king from Celtic mythology, right? I haven't really looked into the details... Why the sudden question, Rin?"
She figured that the boy probably didn't have any way of coming into contact with such strange myths. Even Aoko herself had only learned about it by chance after overhearing a discussion among a few mythology fanatics in her class.
She looked at the boy sitting on her lap with some confusion, feeling that he had been acting a little strange ever since he woke up from his nap.
"...It's just that I dreamed about it, so I wanted to ask."
Not hiding the truth, Aozaki Rin had originally thought that the dream about "King Arthur" was all his own imagination. He had never expected that there would be mythological records of it in reality. A hint of surprise appeared on his small face, but it was still mostly filled with doubt.
"I see... But dreams are just dreams. Even if you have a sad dream, you don't have to keep thinking about it."
Remembering the boy's tear-streaked face when he had just woken up in the afternoon, Aozaki Aoko couldn't help but feel that her little brother really hadn't grown up yet, to be saddened by such a reason.
But she didn't ask what the boy had dreamed about, not wanting to stir up his sad memories. Instead, as if to comfort him, she gently stroked Aozaki Rin's head and said with a smile.
"Don't worry, no matter what happens, I'll take care of it for you. If I can't, there's still our big sister. She's been complaining that her weird magic has no use anyway."
"But if you really want to know about that 'King Arthur' thing, you could ask Big Sis tomorrow. She probably knows more about it than I do."
Subconsciously feeling that her older sister was the type to have read all sorts of miscellaneous books, Aozaki Aoko said with a light laugh.
"...Mhm."
Aozaki Rin nodded. He felt that there were some things he had to confirm to dispel the doubts in his heart.
"Thank you, Sister."
It was unclear whether it was thanks for the girl's comfort or for her suggestion, but the boy said this seriously with a smile on his face. The girl, however, just pinched his supple, dewy cheek with some dissatisfaction and answered with a laugh.
"There's no need to be so polite between us. Alright, it's about time, time to rest. If you sleep too late, you might not grow tall, you know."
Gently patting the boy's head, Aozaki Aoko glanced at the clock, turned off the TV, and let go of the boy. A slight numbness spread through her thighs, but she didn't pay it much mind and stood up directly, preparing to take the boy's hand and guide him safely back to his bedroom.
But at that moment, Aozaki Rin took the initiative and grabbed the girl's hand. He looked up and asked.
"Can we sleep together tonight, Sister?"
Thinking of how the girl had seemed a little down after her bath when she returned home, he subconsciously recalled the special spiritual healing method from his dream and, blinking his eyes, hoped that the girl would cheer up.
Aozaki Aoko was clearly stunned for a few seconds. After all, ever since her older sister, Aozaki Touko, had chanced upon her sleeping restlessly, hugging the boy like a body pillow so tightly that he almost couldn't breathe, she had been made to sleep in a separate room at Touko's exasperated request. This had caused her to feel quite unaccustomed to it for a long time back then, and she would always go to school the next day feeling exhausted.
And now, for Aozaki Rin to take the initiative and make this request, it couldn't help but surprise Aoko a little.
But the girl soon let a slight smile curl her lips, feeling as if she had returned to the past.
She took the boy's hand in hers, bent over slightly, and tilted her body, her chestnut hair fanning out in the air. She looked back at the boy and said with a soft laugh.
"Of course. But you can't tell Big Sis tomorrow, or that person will say I'm bullying you again."
The warm, gentle touch of her fingertips brought an inexplicable sense of peace. The boy smiled and replied softly.
"Mhm."
