Chapter 69: Volume 1: Chapter 70 - Aren't We Too Old to Bathe Together Now?
King Arthur... was that really just a dream?
Steam filled the air, and the sound of the rain outside continued unabated.
Aozaki Rin soaked his entire body in the bathtub, his unfocused eyes staring blankly ahead as he couldn't help but recall everything he had experienced in his sleep.
Artoria, Kay, Merlin, Morgan, the Knights of the Round Table...
If all of that was merely a dream, then why would he have such a strange dream?
The boy's face was filled with confusion, and he blinked, somewhat bewildered.
In fact, it was precisely because he hadn't yet been able to detach himself from everything he had experienced in the dream that he had been so silent on the way home from the mountain workshop.
However, before the boy could find an answer to his own questions, the rustling sound of clothes rubbing together came from outside the bathroom door.
Aozaki Aoko bent over slightly, her hand on the laundry basket, one foot slightly raised. Her long, slender white fingers hooked the edge of her black stockings, which were still slightly damp, and gently peeled them off, revealing fair, smooth, and well-proportioned calves. Her five exquisite and small toes wiggled nimbly in the air a few times, as if uncomfortable with the dampness between them. Then, her fair, jade-like feet, which seemed to be coated in a faint pink glow under the light, stepped onto the slightly cool floor.
Using the same method, she quickly removed the stocking from her other leg. Aozaki Aoko, who was already feeling damp all over due to the rainy day, quickly shed the rest of her clothes, wrapped her body in a bath towel, and, humming an unknown little tune, slid open the bathroom door with a whoosh, just as she always did. Seeing the boy in the bathtub who seemed to be in a daze, the girl said with a light laugh.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Rin. Mom and Dad just called to say they won't be back tonight, so we have to sort out dinner ourselves."
The girl expertly slid the door shut and was about to walk to the shower to wash up first when the boy in the tub, who had been staring blankly, finally came back to his senses. He froze for a moment, then turned his head in confusion toward the direction of the girl's voice and asked, puzzled.
"Is Sister going to join me?"
"Eh? What are you talking about, Rin? Haven't we always bathed together? It saves water."
Aozaki Aoko said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. After all, after her relationship with Aozaki Rin had improved, to fulfill her duties as an older sister, and also considering the inconvenience of his eyes, bathing together had become a customary thing for her.
"But... aren't boys and girls at this age not supposed to bathe together anymore?"
Aozaki Rin asked, as if somewhat uncertain, a hint of hesitation on his small face.
"Wha..."
Not expecting the boy to use this as a reason to object, the girl's body stiffened for a second. Then, as if in disbelief, she quickly asked.
"Who told you that, Rin?"
"...It was Sister Yuika from the church. Is there something wrong with that, Sister?"
Not understanding why the girl's reaction was so intense, Aozaki Rin was a little startled and asked cautiously.
But he was sure he hadn't misremembered the common sense that the nun had told him.
"S-So it was that person..."
Remembering the nun from the Goda Church in town, who was always squinting and serious, Aozaki Aoko's expression became complicated for a moment.
Because of the inconvenience of his eyes, and also worried that the boy might be bullied if sent to a school for special needs children, her parents had asked that nun to teach the boy proper literacy methods and some basic common sense.
Strictly speaking, the nun named Yuika Fuse was the boy's teacher.
But due to her personality, although Aoko respected the nun, she also found her occasional lectures hard to deal with.
And now that the boy was beginning to receive normal physiological education about the differences between men and women from that nun, Aoko naturally couldn't tell him that what he had just said was wrong.
But a feeling of reluctance, that her cute little brother was about to grow up and move away from her, lingered in her heart, causing a flash of regret to appear on her face.
"...Er, Sister Yuika is right. Generally speaking, that is indeed the case. But will you be alright on your own, Rin?"
Laughing awkwardly a few times, Aoko subconsciously ignored the fact that the boy had already independently managed to bathe before she had even entered the bathroom, and asked as if still holding out some hope.
"It's fine. I've gotten used to it after so many years. Don't worry about me, Sister."
Aozaki Rin shook his head gently, unable to see the look of disappointment that flashed across the girl's eyes.
Aozaki Aoko helplessly pulled up her slightly slipping bath towel, momentarily lost in the melancholy of "my little brother is growing up." She sighed softly, then turned and left the bathroom.
"...I understand. But if you run into any problems, call me right away, okay, Rin?"
"Mhm."
Hearing the sound of the bathroom door sliding open again and the pitter-patter of the girl's bare feet walking away on the floor, Aozaki Rin didn't pay much mind to the little episode. He also didn't continue to ponder the matter of the dream.
After all, if he kept on like this, it would be easy for others to notice he was distracted, which would then cause them to worry.
He didn't want his family to start worrying about him just because of his own confusion, so he decided to temporarily bury this doubt deep in his heart.
After soaking in the tub for another ten minutes, letting the warm water wash away his fatigue, the boy got up and left the bathtub. Feeling his way around, he followed his memory to the familiar spot where the towels and clothes were placed.
After drying his body and changing into a fresh set of clothes, Aozaki Rin put on the glasses that Aozaki Touko had specially made for him. In his vision, which had previously been nothing but darkness, the faint outlines of things slowly appeared, allowing him to walk out of the bathroom safely without bumping into anything.
"Sister, you can go in now."
Only able to judge by some blurry white lines that the girl was currently sitting on the sofa with her legs bent, one arm hugging her knees and the other seemingly pressing the remote control to change the TV channels, the boy could not see the sullen expression on her face.
Hearing the boy's voice, Aozaki Aoko finally put down the remote control. Seeing that Aozaki Rin's hair was still only slightly damp and that there were no signs of any bumps on his body, she felt a sense of relief, but at the same time, she seemed a little grumpy that she hadn't gotten the call for help from the boy in the bathroom. She responded with a nod.
"...Oh."
The girl stood up and slowly walked toward the bathroom, leaving Aozaki Rin a little puzzled as to why her mood had soured.
However, now didn't seem to be the time to ask.
Blinking in confusion, he listened to the sound of the TV program in the living room and the rustle of the wind and rain outside the window.
The boy understood that he had truly returned to reality, and that his life would now get back on track.
