Chapter 859: Chapter 853 Treat the Patient_1

Qin Xue glanced at Xue Ling and nodded, promising to come back and spend more time with the child, ensuring she wouldn’t be out too late.

After breakfast with Xue Ling, she fed her two children, told them where she would be going, and then picked up her bag to leave. She wasn’t afraid of being tricked by the man, as she saw genuine pain in his eyes. Besides, she had a place to retreat to, if things went wrong, she could escape there.

“You’re here so early,” remarked Qin Xue, as she arrived at the agreed meeting place and saw he was already waiting.

“I didn’t want you to be left waiting,” the man replied, scratching his nose sheepishly. His punctuality was a habit ingrained from his time in the military, so he didn’t tend to be late.

“Let’s go,” Qin Xue nodded, without further comment.

“Okay,” the man then took Qin Xue to his house.

“Why are there so few people living here?” Qin Xue asked, surveying the old and secluded houses, noticing that only a handful were inhabited.

“Many have moved out with their children. We stayed because I was often not at home; my elderly mother was left here,” he said, looking at the many vacant houses. These places used to be bustling with people during his childhood, but since most of them had moved away, the area had become quite silent.

“Life will get better with time. Do all these families now have houses in the city?” Qin Xue asked while scanning the surroundings.

“Yes, they do. They basically never returned after moving out,” the man replied, unsure as to why Qin Xue was asking such a question.

However, Qin Xue had a purpose in asking. She planned to buy the area, renovate it into a rural resort and establish a tourist attraction where visiting tourists could dine and rest.

Qin Xue knew she had a lot on her plate. She wanted to pursue medicine for interest and to fulfil her dreams. She also needed to sustain her livelihood, which equally important and urgent. Therefore, she needed to start making money and find a reliable person to help her run the business.

“Okay, let’s examine your mother first,” she said. The resort development could wait, she had time to prepare.

“Alright,” the man led Qin Xue to his mother’s room, where the strong, unpleasant odor nearly choked Qin Xue.

Qin Xue hurriedly opened the window to ventilate the room. In such a stifling environment, how could the patient recover? The oppressive atmosphere wasn’t conducive to healing.

“Why did you do that?” the man asked, puzzled. He remembered the doctors telling him not to let the cold air in when his mother was sick. He didn’t understand why Qin Xue would open the window.

“Do you like to stay in a room like this?” Qin Xue asked, ignoring his question.

“No, I don’t,” the man replied, looking around the bright room and instantly feeling better.

“What about now, do you like it?” Qin Xue asked after ensuring the window was secure.

“Much better,” the man answered, now understanding what Qin Xue was getting at.

“It seems you understand,” Qin Xue said, noting his reaction and nodding.

Qin Xue then went to examine the elderly woman sleeping in the bed. She truly looked like an old woman—skinny, almost bleached white hair. She could easily be mistaken for the man’s grandmother.

Qin Xue sighed. It wasn’t easy for a single man to take care of a patient. Considering the woman’s condition now, she wondered what would have happened to this bedridden woman if they were in police custody. The old saying rang true: not every hero has the ability to overcome poverty.

Here was an exemplary man reduced to robbery. She wondered what the authorities would think, knowing a well-trained citizen was forced into this. The wealth gap pervaded through every era; the poor perished from poverty, while the rich died from their riches.
