Chapter 5: Chapter 5 - Lost
A person could be seen lying on a bed looking like a corpse. The room reeked of odor, and looked scattered, but surprisingly the person on the bed was not affected. The person's body twitched as it seemed to arouse from slumber, and opened his eyes groggily. He looked around him confused, as he couldn't recollect all that happened.
His eyesballs looked swollen and his cheeks hollow with a pale face. His body looked frail as he had not eaten for a while. His unkept hair dangled freely on his forehead. He tried standing up, but his legs wobbled and he fell hard. A muffuled groan could be heard as the person struggled to stand. He became annoyed at his pathetic state, then suddenly felt himself renewed with energy. He checked his room, then noticed how it looked disorganized. He clenched his teeth as his memories returned slowly.
He remembered the tragic scene he witnessed before sleeping. Which left him baffled as to why he slept after seeing something like that. He undressed, then checked his body to discover he had lost a lot of weight. He moved to the bathroom to refresh himself. After twenty minutes, he came out and went, to look for what to wear, as he was not certain if he would have any.
Rummaging through his wardrobe, he found a pair of jeans and some shirts and tops he could wear. Picking a top at random, he wore it, then looked for a bag to gather the rest of his clothes. A few minutes later, he was done packing all he felt he needed for now, besides he didn't know the world's situation. He noticed the neighborhood was too quiet. He then guessed maybe people had relocated for safety reasons.
He moved over to the kitchen to check if he could quickly get something to eat to sustain him for a while. He blessed his luck as he found something to eat and quickly ate it. He ravaged the food he saw and ate like a starved man of a year. Going out of the house, he looked at it once again. This was where he spent his childhood. The fond memories he didn't cherished were all buried here. He knows after leaving, he will never be the same anymore.
He visited the streets at random, then saw a poster that had been torn off the wall. He learned of the plan to relocate humans to a new place, the central city. Checking the map provided, he estimated it would take him less than a month to get there, provided he had good means of transport. The good thing is that he would get to travel alone, while the bad news is the journey would be somehow boring. A strange smile lit up his face as he could not wait to get acquainted with the so-called invaders. He did not know the reason. He felt his meeting with that damned beast was not going to be all that mattered. He felt like he was going to enter a maze filled with dangers and thrills that made his blood and spirit boil.
He suddenly laughed loudly, he could not save his family. How was he going to get close to the beast? He knew the beast was the big boss. And to get to it, he must first defeat every minion.
He pushed the thought to the back of his mind as he focused more on the map. According to the map, he has to head a few miles before getting to the first junction. He knew he was not in the best condition to walk, so he needed a car or motorcycle, which left him wondering how he would travel without alerting any of the invaders.
He remembered his father had a motorcycle that had been kept in the garage. He blessed himself for his luck, then quickly headed home. Bringing out the motorcycle and making sure it still worked with enough fuel, he roared the engine to life. He glanced back at his previous house, then sped off.
Subconsciously, he had decided to bury almost all of his memories except the ones he deemed important.
Central city, four months later.
The city, which was just a name given to establish that this was the last, perhaps final, safe zone for humans to occupy. The city, which was large enough to be a continent, can be seen busy with activities. Mechanical voices could be heard in some areas.
The city was divided into four areas. The outer, inner, core and the secluded palace. Each area can be occupied as long as you prove your worth to help humanity and have sufficient strength. Each area was divided into five layers, for proper distribution of resources. And besides, the number of humans that made it to the city was less than a billion. Each layer was labeled letter A, B, C, D and E. With letter E being the lowest and A being the highest. Which means, if a human who lived in the outer area, layer E, wishes to live in the inner area, he has to go through the last four layers before getting to the E layer of the inner area.
Special tests have been designed to make this happen, but it hasn't been put into practice as most people are still trying to get used to life in the city. The city had many futuristic designs. Flying ships could be seen floating everywhere, and they were all heavily armored. The technology of the city looked very different from the one of few months ago. One can see that though the tension hasn't been completely resolved, most citizens were itching to go out of the city to fight. The city had many pillars at strategic points that served as long-distance transportation in case if emergencies. It worked like portals that made traveling faster. The only downside to it was the exorbitant price to activate them. Though life in the city on the surface look easier, it wasn't exactly so as the more important commodities needed large amount of currency and authority. Which made many realize that if they really want to enjoy good things, they had to have sufficient power, or else they will later become suppressed or discarded.
"ALL PERSON OLDER THAN SIXTEEN BUT LESS THAN FORTY ARE TO REPORT BEFORE YOUR LAYER OR AREA MAGISTRATE!" An announcement could be heard in the outer area. This surprised them all, since this was the second time they would be summoned. Some guessed the reason for this summoning as they had been expecting it since they decided to come here.
Expectations could be seen on many faces while some looked despaired as they seem not to wish to participate in whatever lay ahead
Words could be seen moving in the air all over the outer area. Many knew it was time to work for them to get promoted because there had been rumors that those in the inner and core area had most of what they could not afford and if they worked hard enough to be recruited into a faction or clan, their lives would turn a new leaf.
"Let me know what this meeting is all about before I can think of my next step." A hooded figure standing among the crowd muttered to himself. He turned around, then moved into a tall building. The crowd all stared at the time limit displayed. They were given a week to register themselves or suffer the consequences of expulsion from the city.
Expulsion? Yes, in the last few weeks, there had been sightings of people being expelled from the city left to fend for themselves. This wasn't surprising as there will always be those with I'll intentions.
Outside the central city.
A human can be seen on a motorcycle as he traveled at night. His clothes were filled with dust, and his hair looked unkempt as he didn't bother cleaning them. He stopped a few minutes later as he looked at the map with him. He looked at the land before him, then noticed they didn't match.
"Not again!" He shouted. This was the fifteenth time he has encountered a dead end, as the map had suddenly changed. He thought it was the work of the invaders to mislead people from traveling. He spent four months skine traveling due to this, but it also came with some gains. He now knew it was stupid to underestimate this creatures. He suffered greatly at their hands. He got down from the motorcycle then removed his helmet, which then showed a frustrated face. And it didn't make it any better with his heterochromia eyes. The red eye made him look a little scary. He was certain he did not miss anything on the map, which then showed that he had to continue the rest on foot.
He glanced back at his father's motorcycle, then picked up his bags and the little food and water he got along the journey.
"Seems I will miss you. But take care." He moved away from the motorcycle, then saw a narrow path before him. According to the map, this road should still be able to allow vehicles to pass through, but it seems due to the chaos that happened, some things have changed.
