Raze A Dystopian Adventure

Chapter 1: Chapter 1 - Nightmare?

A boy can be seen on his bed wriggling vigorously as if in torment. He gets up immediately panting heavily.

"Where am I?" He asked, looking all around him. He squinted his eyes as he tried to take in the information he received from his brain. "Not today again!", he sighed as he saw his right palm stained with blood. The window beside him was opened to allow ventilation, which left him wondering what could cause him to sweat and perhaps shed blood.

He got down from the bed, moving towards the mirror adjacent the window. Standing before the mirror, he noticed he had a fresh wound on left eyebrow. His blue iris covered in a shed of red and a worried expression and unkempt hair made him look funny.

"Come on I can do this!", he encouraged himself, but shook when he remembered what felt foggy to him, as the dream he had wasn't any clearer. He looked around his room again and was satisfied with what he saw. He's a neat guy and not some, cough! He won't mention them. He remembered today was the last day of his examinations and after that he would be free. He moved towards his little shelf besides the bed to pick a book, and sat on a chair before the table to read.

He stood up minutes later as he felt he could not take it in any longer. He dropped himself on the bed, closing his eyes to sleep. A few minutes later, a soft snore could be heard coming from him.

Unbeknownst to him, an object came out of his eyes, circled round the room, emitting a pale green glow. "Not enough. Need more!" It spoke in an emotionless voice. Then it went back into Alex's left eye.

'Beep, beep.' The alarm beside Alex's bed rang loudly. Alex stretched his hands to turn it off, then lazily got up from his bed to head to the bathroom. "Why do I feel like I forgot something important?" He asked, staring at the mirror on the wall. He shrugged it off since he couldn't remember what his brain simply chose to forget.

Coming out of the bathroom minutes later refreshed, he wore his clothes; a black top with a white tiger engraved on the front and blue jeans. His trousers were blue with a pair of matching black boots. Combing his hair while looking at his expression in the mirror was when he noticed a little wound on his left eyebrow. He rechecked and was certain he saw a wound, then he suddenly forgot about it as he tried seeing it more.

"Mom should have woken up," he said as he left, heading towards the door leading to the parlor. Entering the corridor, he could hear a soft hum coming from the room opposite his, which belonged to his sister Sarah. He decided to ignore her as they didn't have a good relationship with each other. Besides, they would see each other later in the day.

"Alex!" He heard his mom call out to him as he came out of the corridor to the parlor. His mom, putting on a free-flowing skirt coupled with a red top embroidered with flowers with her pale blue eyes and matured face, made Alex proud. He usually felt annoyed because he failed to inherit his parents good looks! Just a little above average was his appearance, which made him think about where he got the bad genes. Probably his ancestors.

Taking his mind off unimportant thoughts, he greeted his mom, then moved to carry his bag he had left the other night on the chair, then moved outside. "Won't you wait for your sister?"

"Mom, she's old enough to come herself." He replied to his mom as he moved to the bus stop, which was just a few minutes away. Thinking about his life since childhood, he realized he didn't enjoy most of it, as he preferred being alone. His sister disliked him for that and even his mother tried changing him, but it ended up futile. And it all started when his father died.

Yes! His father is the one to blame for who he is. The old man left him alone with two women without a goodbye. And he is someone who hates work. He prefers the idea of being lazy most times. But the old man just decided to cut his fun short! Most of his peers enjoy themselves, but he just has to study to be the head of the family!

He raised his head slightly then noticed he had gotten to the bus stop. He sat on the bench available as he waited for the next bus. A smile lit up his face which was quickly hidden as he remembered his friend, Fred. He was a little happy because he would be there to notice how his friend would probably get embarrassed by his crush. Cough! He didn't mean it, he would comfort him as the good friend he is. His friend has been chasing his new crush and only God knows the number he had now.

"Will you not get in?"

Alex was interrupted in his thoughts when he heard a sharp voice probably calling out to him. He noticed a blue bus had stopped before him. He got on the bus, then proceeded to sit on an empty chair. He nodded to the person beside him as he sat. He looked outside the window, enjoying the beautiful scenery as the bus moved.

Minutes later, he got down, then walked down to his school. Raising his head, he once again admired the school's name design- CANOPY HILL. HE sighed as he continued inside. The school was rowdy as the students all moved quickly to their classes as the last bell had been rung for classes.

"Hey Alex." A lady in black jeans and a red turtleneck top greeted him. He smiled in response as he sat on his chair besides the window.

Everyone in his class knew their teacher liked coming five minutes late to allow others to arrive. The teacher arrived at the predicted time with a smile on her face. Yes! She's a lady and will conduct the last paper for the day.

"I hope you are all prepared for this last paper?" She asked them with a smile that wasn't a smile.

"We should!" A boy replied in the front row.

"Okay now let's start!" She said as she shared the questions and told them to give the rest to the others. Alex received his questions but didn't have to pass the rest as he sat in the last row. He skimmed through the questions then answered the ones he knew best, leaving the rest for later. Having finished, he continued staring out of the window, as he did not know what attracted him to it.

"Huh? What am I seeing?" He asked as he noticed he was somewhere else. The surroundings were dark with flashes of lightning running in the dark cloud. A loud clap of thunder made him shiver, then turn around. What he saw made him scared, as this fear came from the depths of his soul.

He saw what he should not have seen. He saw himself in a world plunged into chaos and monsters ravaging the world. The creatures had blissful expressions as they did so, as if humans were delicious delicacies to eat.

Back at home, his sister went out of her room. She had gotten used to her brother's behavior. Although she tried to make it work, he wouldn't allow her to. He has always distanced himself from her since their father died. What baffled her was the fact that when their father was still alive, he was not so friendly with him, which made her think maybe her brother had a personality disorder. If only she knew the cause of his reclusive behavior, she would have her brother whipped for all she cared!

She appeared before her mother, who checked on her health as she could sense her daughter's failing health. They decided to keep it a secret as they thought even if Alex knew, he would not do anything. She was happy as she noticed her daughter's health seemed to have improved compared to the last time.

"Do you not think Alex should know?" Sarah asked her mother as she sat on the couch in the living room. Her mother turned to look at her, "there is no need to do so now, he will know when the time is right." She replied to her.

"Okay mom." She turned on the TV. She checked the time and saw she was late. She decided to skip school today as she and her friends had somewhere to go. So they decided to skip school altogether. Besides, she was done with her exams. She imagined how her brother lived his life, rarely smiling or laughing. And Fred who was the only friend he had, her brother preferred teasing him to anger.

A few minutes later, she stood up. Said farewell to her mother goodbye, then proceeded to head out when the sky turned dark with lightning flashes running around.
