Pokemon: The Master Of Monsters

Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Gym Battle vs. Brock

[LV15 Butterfree♂/Gym]

Gary's Butterfree had evolved into a formidable force, now standing at Level 15. This level increase after evolution was typical for Pokémon like Butterfree or Beedrill, with the exact boost often depending on the Pokémon's potential. Gary used his Eye of Insight to evaluate his Shiny Butterfree's attributes.

Pokémon: Butterfree (Shiny)

Type: Bug/Flying

Level: 15

Potential: Gym

Ability: Compound Eyes (Improves move accuracy)

Moves: String Shot, Bug Bite, Gust, Supersonic, Confusion, Poison Powder, Stun Spore, Sleep Powder

Intimacy: 255 (Maximum)

Gary was delighted. "Six moves already unlocked, including the critical ones! This is way above average."

Pokémon often unlocked racial moves as they grew, but the number of moves depended on the Pokémon's comprehension ability, not just potential. Even high-potential Pokémon like Champion-level ones sometimes failed to learn all their racial moves.

Gary compared Butterfree to Ash's Pokémon, recalling how Ash's Caterpie evolved and learned only three moves: Gust, Sleep Powder, and Stun Spore. His Butterfree, with six moves unlocked, clearly demonstrated exceptional comprehension.

Gary patted Butterfree's fuzzy head. "You're impressive, buddy. I thought I'd only train you temporarily, but you might just earn a permanent spot on the team."

He decided to give Butterfree a chance to prove its worth before considering replacements later in his journey. With that thought, he returned his other Pokémon to their Poké Balls, leaving only Squirtle by his side.

Arrival at the Pewter City Gym

The next morning, after a night of rest at the Pokémon Center, Gary rode his bike to the Pewter City Gym. Standing before the stone-cut structure, he frowned. "This place is so shabby."

Unlike the polished gyms of later years, many Kanto gyms were in dire need of renovations. The Pewter Gym, built decades ago, was no exception.

Just as Gary parked his bike, his system alerted him to a new task.

[Task Issued: Obtain the Pewter Gym Badge]

Reward:

10x Low-Level Rare Candies

Stone Edge Permanent Skill Learner

Top-Grade Hard Stone (Increases Rock-type move power by 50%)

"A permanent Skill Learner? That's a game-changer!" Gary exclaimed.

Skill learners, unlike in the Pokémon games, were incredibly rare in reality. Teaching a Pokémon a move outside its natural skillset required finding a master trainer, paying a hefty fee, and dedicating days—if not weeks—to training. Even Elite Four champions only managed to teach their main Pokémon a handful of extra moves.

The Hard Stone, too, was remarkable. While standard Hard Stones increased Rock-type move power by 20%, this top-grade version boosted it by 50%.

Determined, Gary pushed open the gym's door and stepped inside. The interior was dimly lit, with towering stone pillars and an eerie silence. At the far end, a boy with narrow, squinty eyes sat on a stone platform, arms crossed.

Gary shouted, "Are you Brock?"

The boy turned his head as a spotlight illuminated him.

"Who's asking?" Brock replied, his voice calm yet firm.

Gary smirked. "Name's Gary. I'm here to challenge the Pewter Gym."

---

The Battle Begins

Brock stepped down from his platform, his demeanor shifting from calm to serious. "Is this your first gym challenge?"

"Yes," Gary confirmed.

"Then let me explain," Brock began. "Gym battles aren't the same as friendly matches on the roadside. These are official Pokémon League battles, with strict rules."

Gary crossed his arms, his confidence unwavering. "I'm not like the other rookies you've faced. Let's do this."

Brock nodded, recognizing Gary's determination. "Gym battles are two-on-two. Each trainer uses only two Pokémon. Agreed?"

"Agreed."

With a snap of Brock's fingers, the gym lights blazed to life, revealing a rocky battlefield. Two elevated platforms on either side served as the trainers' stations. Brock took his position and threw his first Poké Ball.

"Let's go, Geodude!"

The Rock Pokémon appeared, its round body supported by two muscular arms. It pounded the ground, sending small tremors across the battlefield.

Gary smirked and reached for his own Poké Ball. "Butterfree, let's show them what we've got!"

The Shiny Butterfree emerged, its wings glimmering faintly under the gym lights.

---

Butterfree vs. Geodude

"Geodude, use Rock Throw!" Brock commanded.

Geodude picked up a nearby rock and hurled it with precision toward Butterfree.

"Butterfree, dodge it with Gust!" Gary countered.

Butterfree flapped its wings forcefully, creating a gust of wind that deflected the rock and sent it crashing into the wall.

"Now use Confusion!"

Butterfree's eyes glowed as it unleashed a psychic attack. Geodude groaned, visibly affected by the mental assault.

"Hang in there, Geodude! Use Defense Curl!" Brock called.

Geodude tucked its arms in and hardened its body, raising its defense.

Gary saw the opening. "Butterfree, finish it with Sleep Powder!"

Butterfree flitted above Geodude and released a fine green powder. Geodude's eyes drooped, and moments later, it fell into a deep sleep.

"Geodude is unable to battle!" declared the gym referee.

---

Onix vs. Squirtle

Brock called back Geodude and sent out his ace: Onix. The massive Rock Snake Pokémon emerged with an earth-shaking roar.

Gary knew Butterfree didn't stand a chance against Onix's Rock-type moves, so he recalled it and sent out Squirtle.

"Onix, use Rock Tomb!" Brock shouted.

Onix slammed its tail into the ground, causing rocks to rise and trap Squirtle.

"Squirtle, break free with Water Gun!"

The Water Pokémon unleashed a powerful jet of water, shattering the rocks and hitting Onix squarely in the face. The Rock Snake recoiled, its movements slowing.

"Good hit! Now follow up with Bubble!"

Squirtle fired a stream of bubbles that exploded on impact, further weakening Onix.

Brock wasn't ready to give up. "Onix, use Bind!"

Onix coiled around Squirtle, squeezing tightly.

"Squirtle, don't panic! Use Withdraw to minimize damage!" Gary instructed.

Squirtle retreated into its shell, reducing the effectiveness of Onix's attack.

"Now, Water Gun again!"

Squirtle popped out of its shell and blasted Onix at point-blank range. The massive Pokémon let out a final roar before collapsing.

"Onix is unable to battle! Gary wins!" the referee announced.

Victory and Rewards

Brock approached Gary with a smile. "Well done. You've got real talent."

He handed Gary the Boulder Badge, symbolizing his victory at the Pewter Gym.

Gary's system chimed:

[Task Complete: Obtain the Pewter Gym Badge]

Reward Received:

10x Low-Level Rare Candies

1x Stone Edge Permanent Skill Learner

1x Top-Grade Hard Stone

Gary grinned, pocketing his badge and rewards. "Thanks, Brock. Guess I'll see you at the Indigo Plateau someday."

Brock chuckled. "We'll see. Good luck, Gary."

With his first badge in hand and his Pokémon team growing stronger, Gary left the Pewter Gym, ready for the next challenge on his journey to become a Pokémon Master.
