Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Butterfree's Evolution
Professor Oak was deeply interested in the progress of his grandson Gary's journey, especially since this year marked the departure of Pallet Town's Rookie Trainers. It had become somewhat of a tradition for new Trainers to send him updates about their Pokémon encounters.
"So far, I've captured three Pokémon," Gary said confidently during their call.
"Only three? That's far too few!" Professor Oak exclaimed in surprise. He knew that other Rookie Trainers, like kai and kal. , had already captured more than six Pokémon. Why was his grandson lagging?
Gary smirked and said, "Grandpa, I'm taking the elite route. I'm not interested in weak Pokémon."
"Is that so?" Professor Oak adjusted his glasses. "What Pokémon have you captured so far?"
"Metapod, Exeggutor, and Scyther," Gary replied.
Professor Oak was stunned. The mention of Exeggutor and Scyther, two incredibly strong Pokémon for a beginner, caught him off guard. "Exeggutor... Scyther? How did you manage that?"
Gary explained, "I caught Exeggutor when it was still an Exeggcute and evolved it using a Leaf Stone. Then, I defeated and captured Scyther in the Viridian Forest with the help of my Exeggutor."
Professor Oak was impressed yet skeptical. Gary's early journey was turning out far more eventful than he'd anticipated. "And Metapod? Why would you bother catching one if you already have Scyther?"
Gary shrugged. "It was a Shiny Caterpie. I couldn't pass up the chance."
"A Shiny Caterpie? That's incredible! You must show it to me!" Professor Oak was visibly excited. Shiny Pokémon were rare, even for someone as experienced as him.
Gary chuckled. "It's currently being cared for by Nurse Joy. I'll show you next time."
"Fair enough. Don't forget to do your best in your upcoming Gym battles," Professor Oak advised before ending the call.

Afternoon on Route 3
After lunch at the Pokémon Center, Gary decided to explore Route 3 to train his Squirtle and possibly find more Pokémon to add to his team. He had specific targets in mind: a Pidgey or Pidgeotto, a Rhydon for its evolutionary potential, and a Mankey to eventually evolve into an Annihilape for its Fighting and Ghost-typing.
As he wandered through Route 3, he encountered many common Pokémon but none with strong potential. Using his Eye of Insight ability, Gary could quickly assess a Pokémon's latent power, which saved him time but also made the search more frustrating.
The area's Pokémon were mostly of average strength, and Gary began to realize that wild Pokémon with high potential were less common in regions frequented by humans. It was clear he would need to venture into more remote and challenging areas to build his elite team.
After battling some wild Pokémon and leveling up Squirtle, Gary decided to call it a day. He glanced down at his Metapod, which he had kept outside its Poké Ball for most of the afternoon in hopes of attracting Flying-types like Pidgey. Unfortunately, the effort had only brought Spearows.
"Metapod, you've worked hard," Gary said, gently patting it. He was about to return the Metapod to its Poké Ball when it began to shake violently. Gary immediately placed it on the ground and stepped back, watching in anticipation.

The Evolution of Butterfree
"Buzz!"
Gary's Metapod glowed brightly, the incandescent light of evolution enveloping its form. Squirtle and Scyther stopped in their tracks, turning their attention to the spectacle. Slowly, the cocoon-like body of Metapod began to morph. Its hard shell split, revealing a pair of delicate wings.
As the light dissipated, Gary found himself staring at a Shiny Butterfree. Its wings shimmered with faint pink accents, its body bore a lighter hue, and its turquoise eyes gleamed with intelligence. Compared to a standard Butterfree, its coloration was unique but less striking than Gary had hoped.
"Meow~!" Butterfree chirped, flapping its new wings enthusiastically as it hovered around Gary. The Pokémon seemed grateful, knowing it had reached this stage thanks to Gary's care and training.
Gary observed his newly evolved Butterfree with pride. Though its color wasn't as vibrant as the pink Butterfree featured in stories, it was still a rare and special Pokémon.

Strategic Planning
Gary considered Butterfree's potential. While it wasn't as powerful as some of his other Pokémon, it had access to status-altering moves like Sleep Powder and Stun Spore, which could prove invaluable in battle. Butterfree's Psychic-type moves could also provide an edge against Fighting and Poison Pokémon.
Satisfied with his progress for the day, Gary decided to focus on his upcoming Gym challenge. He would be facing Brock, the Gym Leader of Pewter City, who specialized in Rock-type Pokémon. While Gary knew he had an advantage with Squirtle's Water-type moves, he reminded himself not to underestimate his opponent.

Final Thoughts
As Gary and his team returned to the Pokémon Center, he reflected on his journey so far. His team was shaping up well with Squirtle, Butterfree, Exeggutor, and Scyther, but he knew there was still a long way to go. His goal of building an elite team required patience and persistence, and he was ready for the challenges ahead.
"Tomorrow's a big day," Gary thought to himself, looking at the glowing skyline of Pewter City. "Time to show Brock what I've got."
With his Pokémon resting and his strategy in mind, Gary prepared for the next step in his journey to become a Pokémon Master.
