The next day, Jacob arrived at the incubation room early in the morning to check on his two Pokémon eggs when something unexpected happened.
The Applin egg showed no changes, its hatching time still displayed as six months away. However, Axew's egg had undergone a remarkable transformation. Its Potential had been upgraded from ordinary to rare level, and the estimated hatching time had decreased from approximately one year to eleven months.
This sudden change left Jacob feeling as if he were dreaming. He was tempted to slap himself awake but feared hurting his face. At that moment, he really missed Kyle. If only Kyle were still here.
After checking multiple times, Jacob confirmed this wasn't a dream. The unexpected good fortune made him smile from ear to ear. He secretly wondered if this was happening because he had performed many good deeds, or perhaps it was divine favor. Could it be that his love had somehow healed Axew? Was this the special bond between a trainer and Pokémon?
Whatever the reason, it was undoubtedly a positive development.
After examining both Pokémon eggs, Jacob continued his training regimen. Strangely, Trainer Nina didn't come to the restricted area for special training today, making Jacob suspect she might be drinking again.
He received a call shortly afterward—someone would be arriving in the capital that afternoon to collect a few Pokémon eggs. Meanwhile, Jacob trained his Pokémon while contemplating what to do with the cottonee egg.
Due to task constraints, he didn't dare to claim the cottonee egg as his own, nor did he dare keep it nearby to raise it. If keeping it close to train it counted as capturing it, Jacob would lose more than he gained. Once the cottonee egg hatched, he would only have two options.
The first option was to entrust someone else with raising it, then reclaim it after Jacob had captured six Dragon-type Pokémon and completed his task. However, this approach carried certain risks. He could only entrust the cottonee to someone he completely trusted—family members. Of course, Nina was also among those Jacob trusted.
The cottonee would likely develop an emotional attachment to whoever raised it and might consider them its trainer. If that happened, Jacob obviously couldn't take the cottonee back. He would simply gift the Pokémon to them.
Although a King-level cottonee was incredibly powerful and rare, family and friends were clearly more important to Jacob. If necessary, he would unhesitatingly give this Pokémon egg to them, just as his brother had given him the Charmander egg.
That's how true family relationships worked. They willingly gave you their best because they knew that when you succeeded, you would never forget them.
The second option was to sell or trade it. Many people would eagerly trade for a King-level cottonee egg. For most Pokémon, Jacob might consider this option, but for a Pokémon like cottonee, Jacob would never do it. It was better to keep a Pokémon like cottonee either in his own possession or with someone he trusted.
After careful consideration, Jacob decided to wait and see what happened when the cottonee egg hatched.
That afternoon, Rudy arrived in the capital. After a brief conversation between the two brothers, Rudy quickly took several Pokémon eggs and departed. He also informed Jacob that the financial issues had been resolved and told him not to worry.
Time passed swiftly, and a week flew by in the blink of an eye. During this week, Jacob's Pokémon had steadily grown stronger and made remarkable progress. After seven days of training, Charmeleon, with its increased strength, learned the Fire Fang move. Additionally, with Nina's guidance, Charmeleon successfully mastered Heat Wave.
At the same time, Jacob asked his grandfather to use his connections to purchase a one-time TM for Taunt, allowing Noibat to successfully learn the move.
His other Pokémon, Dreepy and Grovyle, were also improving steadily. Affected by the ghost-type energy from the Poison Pot, Dreepy was growing exceptionally fast and showing signs of catching up to Charmeleon.
During this week, the first thing Jacob did each morning was check on Axew's egg. He noticed something strange: Axew's incubation time decreased by one month every other day. After a week, Axew's incubation period had dropped dramatically from eleven months to just four months.
This made Jacob increasingly suspicious that something unusual was happening. Axew and the Applin had both been brought back from the Dragon's Secret Realm together, but while Axew recovered extremely quickly, the Applin recovered at a normal pace. Something was clearly amiss.
Jacob also secretly observed that during daylight hours, Axew's condition barely changed. From morning until night, the state of Axew's egg remained completely stable.
But after a good night's sleep, Jacob would wake to find that Axew's incubation time had decreased by one month. This convinced Jacob that something must be happening each night to accelerate Axew's recovery.
Although this was beneficial for Jacob, curiosity drove him to discover what was happening. He decided to sneak back to the incubation room that night to investigate.
That evening, Jacob skipped his usual training session. Instead, he returned to his dormitory early, changed into a black outfit, and stealthily made his way to the incubation room. Dressed in black, Jacob blended perfectly into the darkness of night.
"I am the embodiment of the night. I am the shadow," he thought to himself.
Jacob concealed himself in a corner where he was nearly invisible unless someone looked very carefully. He kept his eyes fixed on the door of the incubator. The sky grew darker, and the full moon rose high. He waited until he was almost nodding off when finally, he spotted a figure approaching.
Trainer Nina?
Jacob was surprised to see that the approaching person was Nina, but upon reflection, it made sense. In the Secret Realm, only Nina would help him like this.
Still, Jacob was curious about how Nina was helping to heal Axew's injuries. When he saw her enter the incubator, he quietly followed and hid by the window to peek inside.
Nina walked to Axew's egg and gently stroked the eggshell with her hands. Then, a blue light appeared on her palms.
Jacob, watching from outside, nearly popped his eyes out in astonishment. Was this some kind of special power?
Nina actually possessed extraordinary abilities. As the blue energy from Nina's hands flowed into the eggshell, the indigo Dragon Energy nutrient solution was quickly absorbed by the egg and became as transparent as clear water. Nina promptly replaced the bottle with a new one. She repeated this process, consuming a bottle of Dragon Energy solution in about ten minutes.
Nina continued this procedure. Fine beads of sweat formed on her forehead, and her face gradually paled. After two hours, Nina's face had become completely ashen, and the blue energy light emanating from her hands had dimmed to near extinction. She had to stop and wipe the sweat from her cheeks.
At that moment, Jacob noticed that Axew's incubation time had suddenly changed from four months to three months. Seeing that Nina was about to leave, he hurriedly retreated deeper into the corner to avoid being discovered.
As Nina departed, she was clearly unsteady on her feet. Her steps were weak and staggering, her body visibly frail. It was obvious that using this special power had significant limitations or consumed tremendous energy, otherwise Nina wouldn't appear so weakened.
Jacob watched this scene from afar, his emotions particularly complex as he thought about how haggard Nina looked at night, yet still insisted on teaching every morning.
