-----------------

Altaria, a Dragon- and Flying-type Pokémon, has feathers like white clouds. Once it flies into real clouds, it's almost impossible to track its movements. It possesses a singing voice of incomparable beauty, capable of enchanting anyone who hears it, making them feel as if they've stepped into a dream.

In the games, Altaria's Mega Evolution gives it the rare Dragon- and Fairy-type combination, along with the ability Pixilate. In mirror matches, it's a fierce contender—earning it the tongue-in-cheek nickname "dragon traitor."

When Sato saw Clair send out an Altaria, all this information flashed in his mind. Using his system's scanning ability to check its data, he quickly realized this battle would be a tricky one.

'No wonder—she's a direct descendant of one of Johto's top Pokémon clans. Even her 'casual' Pokémon have such a massive move pool. And as expected, the dragon-taming families really do know how to teach Draco Meteor and Outrage. This Altaria clearly isn't even her main Pokémon, yet it still knows both of those high-powered Dragon-type moves.'

Seeing the data on his scanner, Sato couldn't help but envy the huge resources backing Clair. Even a non-main dragon was armed with such powerful moves.

But Sato wasn't the type to wallow in self-pity. His envy vanished in less than a heartbeat, and he began working out a plan to defeat Altaria based on Nidoking's capabilities.

In the games, it would be simple—Sheer Force Nidoking with a Life Orb could easily one-shot Altaria with Ice Beam, a move with perfect accuracy in normal conditions. No complicated strategy needed.

But this was reality—and in reality, there was a certain overpowered move: Dodge.

If you're familiar with it—yes, it's the move Ash famously abuses in battles. But here, it's not just Ash; even random trainers can use it.

As long as Clair wasn't a fool, she had plenty of ways to make Altaria avoid Nidoking's Ice Beam using Protect, Double Team, countering with another powerful move, or simply evading with a burst of speed.

In real battles, there are countless ways to neutralize a super-effective move. That's why trainers are valuable—their tactics and timing are what make Pokémon battles truly compelling.

So forget about "dragon slayers" or "dragon traitors." In reality, one-on-one, most Dragon-types—especially those with a wide move pool and the ability to fly—can easily beat the so-called "counters" that wreck them in the games.

That's why Sato knew Ice Beam couldn't be used carelessly—it had to be saved for the killing blow. If it didn't secure the KO, Nidoking could be in serious trouble. After all, this opponent could fly, and with Dragon Dance it could steadily build up an advantage and potentially sweep two Pokémon in a row.

The best plan, in Sato's mind, was to convince the opponent that Nidoking didn't know any Ice-type moves, bait out Altaria's defensive tactics, and then strike with Ice Beam or Ice Punch when her guard was down.

"Altaria, let's greet them with a beautiful song—use Sing."

Clair didn't give Sato much time to think. The moment the referee announced the start, she ordered her Altaria—already hidden among the clouds—to act.

A moment later, a long, clear, and enchanting melody floated down from a white cloud overhead. Many who heard it, both people and Pokémon, began closing their eyes, utterly captivated.

Clair, having heard Altaria's song many times before, was immune to its effect. With her strong willpower, she stood firm, eyes locked on the battlefield.

Sato, as a psychic, was naturally unaffected by Altaria's wide-area hypnotic song—his mental defenses were too strong for ordinary sleep tactics.

But at this moment, Sato decided to play dirty. He pretended to grow drowsy, just like the referee beside him, and even used telepathy to have Nidoking feign sleep as well.

In truth, with a post-evolution mental power boost, Nidoking was far too strong-minded to be affected by Sing. But under Sato's orders, he yawned, drooped his eyelids, and eventually flopped onto the ground "asleep."

A trained eye could have spotted the bad acting instantly—but Clair, raised under the strict training of her clan and rarely watching TV dramas, was far too straightforward to suspect anything.

"Hmph, all bark and no bite. Altaria! Finish him with Dragon Pulse!"

Seeing both Sato and Nidoking apparently asleep like the rest of the audience, Clair smirked and launched her attack.

From the clouds, Altaria swooped down to less than a hundred meters above the ground, releasing a massive, roaring dragon-shaped wave aimed straight at Nidoking.

But just before it hit, Nidoking's eyes snapped open, flashing with blue light. His Life Orb pulsed with a pink-purple glow, and in an instant, a shimmering psychic barrier enveloped him.

Unleashing psychic induced Confusion, Nidoking's Sheer Force and Life Orb both activated, boosting the base 50-power move to a fierce 84.5-power strike.

The dragon-shaped wave froze midair, caught by invisible psychic power. Under Nidoking's mental grip, the dragon head twisted around—and in the next second, it surged back toward Altaria at full speed.
