Sato used two rare pink diamonds to quickly close the distance between himself and the two beautiful girls. In an instant, he seemed to have become a rare kind of male best friend to them, and they began speaking freely in his presence.
During their conversation, Sato also deepened his understanding of Whitney and Daisy.
Whitney, though outspoken and sometimes careless with her words, was never vague when it came to serious matters. She was an energetic young lady on the outside, but with a refined and delicate heart on the inside.
Daisy, on the other hand, completely refreshed Sato's impression of her. He had thought she was the type of gentle, intellectual woman, but in reality, she had the heart of a bold, competitive fighter.
When around those she was close to, Daisy would drop her polite facade, and the moment the topic turned to battles, her fighting spirit would blaze to life.
Naturally, a dining table with two striking girls was bound to draw attention—especially since their table was already in the spotlight. Soon enough, it seemed as though nearly every gaze in the room was directed toward Sato's table.
Sato, who disliked attracting too much attention, felt a bit helpless. With no better solution, he asked the two girls—who now held him in much higher regard—if they minded him wearing the Ditto-skin disguise mask again. They agreed.
Both Whitney and Daisy were very talkative. For most of the meal, Sato only needed to say a few words here and there, giving brief opinions.
However, toward the latter half, the two girls seemed to team up to get him talking more. So, Sato gave them a condensed version of the events he had experienced over the past month on the mysterious island.
His adventures in that single month were more thrilling than what many ordinary trainers might experience in a lifetime. Hearing about them left both girls wide-eyed in astonishment.
"Oh my Arceus, you were surrounded by wild Pokémon every day there, and yet you're still alive and well now. That's amazing."
"That trial from the high Elite Four-tier Venusaur sounded brutal—hell-level difficulty. I can't believe you came up with a way to get through it. If it were me, my brain would've given out at the first stage."
"If there's a chance, take me to that island to train sometime. Dangerous, sure, but definitely a place to grow stronger quickly."
Both Whitney and Daisy expressed their admiration and amazement as they listened, clearly impressed by his perilous journey.
Happy moments always pass quickly, and soon the afternoon round of battles began.
Sato had already fought four matches that morning. Since winning five matches would secure a spot in the second stage of the competition, he only needed one more victory.
In the fifth match, Sato once again won with ease, securing his place in stage two.
However, after five rounds, more than half the participants had been eliminated, leaving only 120 contestants—none of them weaklings.
Thus, in his first battle of stage two, Sato encountered a formidable opponent.
In the central battle arena of Goldenrod City—a massive outdoor venue capable of holding thousands—Sato now faced a blue-haired girl holding a whip. They stood at opposite ends of the field, the stands completely packed with spectators.
"Go, Clair! I bet my entire fortune on you—show that Kanto boy the might of the Dragon Girl!"
"Clair, my goddess! Look this way, please! I'll cheer for you with my life!"
"Hey, Kanto kid! Just surrender already! You think you can beat her Dragon pseudo-legendary? Wait too long and your Pokémon will be smashed to bits!"
The cheers were overwhelmingly one-sided, almost entirely for the whip-wielding blue-haired girl. Almost no one was cheering for Sato.
Sato, however, ignored the biased crowd. His focus was locked on the blue-haired girl whose cold, sharp gaze met his. In truth, he was excited to face her.
The girl wore a blue one-piece battle dress, a large white gemstone at her chest. She had blue leather gloves, black wristbands, long slender legs in blue leather boots, and a black-and-red cape draped over her shoulders. Combined with the dragon-like aura radiating from her, she exuded heroic elegance and noble mystery.
Yes—Sato's first opponent in stage two was none other than Clair, the cousin of the Dragon Master Lance.
This prodigy from Blackthorn City had practically debuted at her peak—after all, she was this year's Johto League runner-up.
"Hurry it up, referee. Don't waste time."
After glancing at Sato for a moment, Clair nodded slightly, then cracked her whip against the ground before the nervous referee, her expression icy.
"Y-yes! Spin the roulette!"
Not daring to argue, the referee relayed instructions via radio to the staff.
The large screen soon displayed the results: the battlefield would be Grass Terrain, and Sato would send out his Pokémon first.
"Grass field, huh? Then it's you—Nidoking, to battle!"
At the referee's signal, Sato pulled out a PokeBall and tossed it high.
"Nido!!!"
In a flash, Nidoking landed on the lush grass with the weight of a boulder, letting out a roar so loud it drowned out the audience's cheers.
"Take flight, Altaria—this battle is yours to command!"
Clair studied Nidoking with a serious look, then took out a blue PokeBall bearing a black dragon claw emblem. She tossed it, releasing a graceful Altaria.
With a flap of its wings, the Pokémon soared upward, disappearing into the clouds within seconds.
