Among the Water-type Pokémon surfacing from the lake, the ones appearing in the greatest numbers were undoubtedly from the Poliwag, Tympole, and Magikarp evolutionary lines.
Under the alluring effect of Sweet Scent released by Bellossom, the lake's surface visible to Sato was crowded with all sorts of Water-type Pokémon.
Apart from the Poliwag and Tympole lines, most of the Water-type Pokémon lacked the ability to move on land.
Especially under the current blazing sun, they would quickly dehydrate upon leaving the water.
Thus, under the lure of Bellossom's Sweet Scent, only members of the Poliwag and Tympole lines managed to come ashore and quickly surged toward the direction of Bellossom.
As for those Water-types without amphibious capabilities, most could only look on helplessly. A few overly naive ones scrambled out onto land and simply basked in the beautiful sunshine.
The incoming Poliwag-line Pokémon were mostly Poliwag and Poliwhirl; only a dozen or so were Poliwrath, and there wasn't a single Politoed in sight.
The Tympole-line Pokémon, however, were mostly Palpitoads, and their numbers were noticeably fewer than the Poliwag-line.
But since the final evolution of the Tympole-line didn't require special items, they had more advanced combat power on the field this time. The number of Seismitoads was at least double that of the Poliwraths.
Both the Poliwag and Tympole lines were among the largest populations in Poliwag Lake, ranking within the top three—just slightly behind the Magikarp-line.
Due to the difficulty of evolving Magikarp into Gyarados, combined with their naturally weak base strength—and the fact that Gyarados, being extremely aggressive by nature, showed little sense of belonging to its own species and preferred to act alone—even though the Magikarp-line had long held numerical dominance in Poliwag Lake, their social standing was only considered middle-tier.
If not for a few powerful Gyarados maintaining their presence, the Magikarp-line might have already become the lowest-ranked group, bullied and devoured by other Water-type Pokémon clans.
The Poliwag and Tympole lines were different. Their populations weren't just large—their evolved forms also had a strong sense of loyalty to their species.
Because of this, both lines remained among the top two strongest factions in Poliwag Lake.
However, even though Poliwag Lake was vast and rich in resources, the number of wild Pokémon it could support was ultimately limited.
So whenever the population reached a certain threshold, a large-scale war over food and territory was bound to break out.
In such conflicts, the Poliwag and Tympole clans—each occupying the majority of Poliwag Lake's territory—would inevitably clash the fiercest.
Moreover, with more and more strong Tympole-line evolutions emerging, and the Poliwag-line facing a bottleneck due to the restrictive evolution conditions, an imbalance in top-tier strength began to surface.
The Tympole clan was no longer content to be runner-up. They had been increasingly challenging the Poliwag clan's dominance in the lake.
Thus, even in ordinary times, friction between the two groups was common.
Over time, their animosity had reached irreconcilable levels. Whenever they met, even the slightest provocation would spark a full-blown fight—no greetings, no hesitation.
Now, drawn to the same Sweet Scent emitted by Bellossom, both groups' main forces once again encountered each other unexpectedly. Though they hadn't yet figured out the source of the aroma, seeing their rivals instantly triggered hostility.
It only took a single excited Seismitoad, riled up by the fragrance, accidentally ramming into a Poliwag and injuring it—for a massive clash to erupt.
Within moments, the two clans began to brawl fiercely on the lakeside, seemingly forgetting why they had even left the water in the first place.
"What the heck is going on?! This wasn't the plan! Can someone please tell me what's happening?"
Hiding in a tree, Sato watched the sudden battle breaking out on the lakeshore with a bewildered expression. Since he wasn't aware of the history between the two groups, this escalation had completely taken him by surprise.
Still, even though the traps Sato had carefully set were momentarily useless, his initial goal had been achieved.
Because the conflict was escalating, more and more Poliwag-line Pokémon emerged from the lake. What had begun as a small skirmish had now turned into a full-scale battle-royale.
Seeing this, Sato wisely instructed Bellossom to stop using Sweet Scent, and he took a step back with his Pokémon to watch from a safe distance.
Under the harsh sunlight, the battle conditions were poor for both species. But neither clan lacked members capable of using the move Rain Dance.
Before long, as many of their members began using Rain Dance simultaneously, a dense mass of clouds quickly gathered over the lake and expanded outward at a visible rate.
In just a short while, the dark clouds had blanketed an area several hundred meters wide.
Then, after a flash of lightning cracked through the clouds, the rain came pouring down.
Patter patter patter—the heavy downpour began.
Now, with the perfect battlefield set, the fight between the two clans escalated dramatically.
In the grand brawl, both sides were evenly matched—neither gaining a significant advantage.
However, a closer look revealed that the Tympole clan was slightly at a disadvantage.
Although they had more high-tier combatants than the Poliwag clan, most of the latter's powerful members had the Water Absorb ability, which completely neutralized the Tympole clan's usual Water-type attacks. They were forced to resort to Ground-type moves instead.
Fortunately, many members of the Tympole clan had the Swift Swim ability. In the rain, their speed skyrocketed, significantly boosting their overall battle power and preventing a quick collapse.
Meanwhile, the true culprit behind all this—Sato—was now hiding inside a tree hollow crafted by Bellossom using Secret Power.
He had already recalled Arcanine, who hated water, and Ursaring, who still couldn't get wet. Only Bellossom, Ariados, and Kecleon remained by his side on alert.
As for Pidgeotto, who had completed its task, Sato had rewarded it with some Berries and sent it away.
"Never expected things to spiral like this... Looks like the grudge between those two lines runs really deep. Still, this might actually work in my favor. With this rainy weather, it'll be much easier to find Poliwag with the Swift Swim ability."
From his high vantage point in the tree hollow, Sato used his binoculars to observe the chaos unfolding at the lakeside. As he watched, he simultaneously used his system's scanning ability to examine the Poliwags in combat.
Very soon, he found his target amidst the large-scale battle.
But that wasn't all—he also discovered an unexpected surprise.
A flash of brilliant gold stood out conspicuously in the midst of all the chaos...
