Pokemon: The Gameboy Effect

Chapter 101: Too OP!

(A/N: Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope you're having a wonderful time with your loved ones. As a holiday gift, I'm bringing you a triple chapter today! Enjoy, and thank you for being part of this journey!)

Blaziken planted its claws into the battlefield, flames licking up its wrists as its fierce cry echoed through the air. Its LV stood proudly at 44, four levels above its opponent's and its mastery over Close Combat was renowned. The crowd leaned forward in anticipation.

John adjusted his cap, smirking. "Let's see what you've got."

"Blaziken, Close Combat!" Flannery commanded, her voice steady despite the tension. The blazing bird lunged forward with a series of rapid punches and kicks, each strike a calculated burst of raw power.

Dust and debris erupted as the attacks collided with Onix's shimmering diamond body. When the dust settled, Flannery's confident expression faltered. Onix was still standing, completely unscathed except for a faint white scratch along its crystalline surface.

"What?" Flannery's voice cracked. "That should've—how did it not—?"

John chuckled. "Terrible luck? Or maybe your Blaziken isn't hitting as hard as you thought." He raised the polished Rock horn to his lips and blew a sharp, resonant note. Onix roared in response, its massive body undulating like a serpent as John barked his next command: "Onix, Stealth Rock! Lock it down!"

Chunks of jagged rock erupted from the ground, hovering menacingly around the field, ready to strike any Pokemon Flannery sent out. She gritted her teeth. Switching Pokemon was no longer an easy option.

"Blaziken, Blaze Kick!" Flames ignited around Blaziken's foot as it spun into a fiery kick, aiming directly for Onix's head. The impact sent sparks flying, but Onix didn't flinch.

"Iron Defense!" John shouted. Onix shimmered as its diamond-like surface hardened further, deflecting the flames with ease.

Flannery clenched her fists. "Alright, we'll turn up the heat! Sunny Day!"

Blaziken crossed its arms and let out a powerful cry, summoning a blazing sun that bathed the battlefield in golden light. The sunlight boosted the power of Fire-type moves and made Blaziken's flames roar with renewed intensity.

But John was ready. "Onix, Sandstorm!"

The battlefield exploded into chaos as a swirling sandstorm clashed with the intense sunlight. The air was thick with grit and heat, making visibility almost impossible. Onix's diamond body shimmered ominously through the haze, an unyielding force in the storm.

Flannery smirked. "Blaziken, use Flare Blitz!"

Blaziken charged through the storm, its entire body cloaked in raging flames. The attack hit Onix dead-on, an explosion of fire and energy ripping through the field. For a moment, it seemed like the tide had turned. But when the smoke cleared, Onix was still standing, its diamond hide glinting as if mocking the effort.

John's voice cut through the crowd's stunned silence. "Impressive. Now it's our turn. Onix, Rock Slide!"

Onix reared back and unleashed a deluge of massive boulders, each one glowing faintly as they rained down on Blaziken. Despite its speed, Blaziken couldn't dodge them all. A particularly large rock struck it squarely, sending it sprawling across the ground.

"Get up, Blaziken!" Flannery shouted. "Use Reversal! Give it everything you've got!"

Blaziken pushed itself up, eyes blazing with determination. Channeling all its remaining strength, it unleashed a ferocious attack, landing a clean blow on Onix. The impact sent shockwaves through the ground, but Onix barely moved, its towering form unshaken.

"That's enough," John said, his tone final. "Onix, finish it with Rock Tomb."

Onix let out a deafening roar and slammed its tail into the ground, summoning a cascade of rocks that trapped Blaziken in an unyielding prison. The fiery bird struggled, but its strength gave out, and it collapsed to the ground.

The referee's flag shot up. "Blaziken is unable to battle! The round goes to John!"

Flannery clenched her jaw, recalling her fallen Pokemon. "Fine. If that's how it's going to be, let's turn this around. Arcanine, you're up!"

The sleek, powerful Arcanine bounded onto the field, its coat glowing in the sunlight as its Intimidate ability triggered. Onix's attack power dropped slightly, but John didn't seem worried.

"Arcanine, Extreme Speed!" Flannery shouted.

Before John could react, Arcanine became a blur, slamming into Onix with blinding speed. The attack finally seemed to faze the Diamond Onix, causing it to recoil slightly.

"Nice hit," John admitted. "But we're not done. Onix, Rock Polish! Let's pick up the pace."

Onix's body glowed faintly as it increased its speed, moving with surprising agility for something so massive.

"Now, Stone Edge!" John commanded.

Sharp, glowing rocks burst from the ground, targeting Arcanine with pinpoint accuracy. The fiery canine dodged several, but a few strikes landed, leaving it battered and limping.

"Arcanine, Play Rough! Don't hold back!"

Arcanine growled, its claws glowing with Fairy energy as it leapt at Onix. The attack connected, but the damage was minimal. Onix retaliated immediately with another Rock Slide, burying Arcanine under a fresh wave of boulders.

Flannery's heart sank as her Arcanine struggled to stand, its strength waning. She shouted her final command: "Use Flamethrower!"

Arcanine unleashed a stream of searing flames, engulfing Onix in a fiery inferno. But as the fire died down, Onix emerged unscathed, its diamond body reflecting the sunlight like a taunt.

"End it," John said simply. "Rock Slide."

The final barrage of rocks descended like a meteor shower, and Arcanine collapsed under the relentless assault.

The referee raised his hand. "Arcanine is unable to battle! John and Onix are the winners!"

Flannery returned her Arcanine to its Pokeball, her expression a mix of frustration and grudging respect. "Alright, you win. But don't think I'm letting this go. Next time, I'll crush that Onix of yours."

John grinned, patting Onix's diamond hide. "I'll be waiting."

As he left the battlefield, John couldn't help but marvel at his Onix's performance. Its indomitable defense and synergy with its abilities had carried the day.

"I mean, sure, Broken Armor  leaves it vulnerable after a few hits," he muttered to himself, "but good luck getting past that initial wall. With its defense boosted to ridiculous levels, even a powerhouse like Blaziken couldn't make a dent."

He couldn't shake the thought that his Onix might be his ticket to making a name for himself in competitive circuits. "That defense... It's like the perfect counter to any reckless attacker. Kind of reminds me of Wobbuffet's glory days. Except this time, it's all brute strength."

But he knew this was just the beginning. With Onix set to evolve into Steelix soon, he couldn't wait to see how much stronger it could become.

For now, though, he'd savor the victory. After all, it wasn't every day you crushed a gym leader in such style.
