Chapter 100: Onix Is The GOAT?
The wind roared, kicking up sand that engulfed the battlefield in a swirling haze. The intense sunlight from Torkoal's Sunshine ability dimmed under the storm's oppressive embrace, and the referee's horn cut sharply through the air.
The battlefield transformed into a chaotic tempest, where non-Ground, Rock, or Steel-type Pokemon would suffer gradual damage. For Onix, the storm wasn't just a defensive shield; it bolstered its special defense by fifty percent, a fact John planned to exploit.
But John wasn't overly concerned with Sandstorm's technical benefits. For him, the strategy was simple: keep the weather under his control and deny Flannery the advantage of a Sunny Day.
"Torkoal, use Sunny Day!" Flannery called out, her fiery confidence as blazing as her red hair.
Flannery's Torkoal, with its natural Sunshine ability, was the ultimate weather enforcer. A master of fire-type moves, Torkoal thrived in sunny conditions, where its already potent flames became downright overwhelming. And Flannery had good reason to fear Sandstorm; John's Greninja, a water-type, would gain a significant edge if he wrested control of the battlefield's weather. She couldn't afford to lose her advantage.
The light ball launched from Torkoal's mouth soared upward, bursting with brilliant intensity, as if commanding the sun itself. But to Flannery's shock, the bright flare dissipated within seconds, swallowed by the relentless storm.
"Sunny Day failed?" Flannery gasped. Her eyes darted to the shimmering, metallic Onix. "How is that possible?"
John smirked. He'd been ready for this moment. "It's not just about power, Flannery. Sometimes it's about preparation."
Unknown to her, John had stacked the odds heavily in his favor. He'd equipped Onix with a Smooth Rock, extending the duration of Sandstorm. To top it off, he'd used his secret weapon, the Rock Horn, boosting all of Onix's attributes by twenty-five percent and increasing the strength of its Rock-type moves by a staggering fifty percent. With Onix already at a higher level than Torkoal, the results were inevitable.
"Onix, follow up with Sand Tomb!" John ordered.
Onix slammed its tail into the ground, the impact sending tremors rippling through the battlefield. The ground beneath Torkoal cracked and twisted, transforming into a swirling pit of quicksand that locked the fire-type Pokemon in place.
Flannery clenched her fists. "Torkoal, break free! Use Flamethrower!"
Torkoal unleashed a blazing stream of fire, cutting through the storm, but its movements were sluggish, hindered by the sandy vortex pulling at its limbs. The flames barely grazed Onix, whose massive frame shrugged off the attack.
"Now, Rock Slide!" John shouted.
The air above the battlefield shimmered as a portal-like opening formed. From it, countless boulders rained down, hammering into Torkoal. The fire-type groaned under the relentless assault before collapsing into the quicksand.
"Torkoal is unable to battle! Onix wins!" declared the referee.
John allowed himself a small grin. "Not so sunny now, is it?"
Flannery's face was a mixture of frustration and grudging respect as she recalled her Torkoal. "Well played, Challenger. But don't think I'm out of tricks yet."
She tossed another Pokeball, and with a flash of light, a sleek, muscular Blaziken emerged. Its powerful legs flexed as it landed, radiating an aura of fiery intensity.
[Blaziken: LV44]
John's eyebrows raised slightly. "Blaziken, huh? Not bad."
Blaziken was Flannery's ace, a powerhouse boasting speed and strength that could overwhelm most opponents. Its Speed Boost ability meant it would only get faster with each passing turn.
"Blaziken, Close Combat!" Flannery commanded.
"Onix, Rock Slide again!" John countered.
Blaziken darted forward, its movements almost a blur despite the storm. Each step kicked up sand, but it pressed on, determined to reach its massive opponent. Onix, in turn, roared and summoned another barrage of falling rocks, aiming to intercept the fiery bird.
The battlefield became a cacophony of impacts as Blaziken dodged and weaved through the rain of stones. It leaped high into the air, closing the distance to Onix with astonishing speed. Its fists and legs glowed with energy as it delivered a flurry of blows, each one landing with a resounding thud against Onix's rocky hide.
John winced. Blaziken's Close Combat was no joke—it hit hard and fast. But Onix was a tank, and its boosted defenses meant it could take the punishment.
Clank!
