Leaving the secret garden, Chris did not give up on the path of treasure exploration.
Chris set the Dowsing Machine to block Soul Dew fluctuations temporarily. Such a significant treasure in Alto Mare surely wasn't limited to Soul Dew.
Sure enough, as soon as Chris set up the shield, the Dowsing Machine reacted strongly. Although the signal wasn't as powerful as a legendary item like Soul Dew, Chris felt it was at least a secret treasure-level Pokémon artifact.
"If I can't get Soul Dew, obtaining a secret treasure-level item wouldn't be bad either," Chris thought.
He continued relying on Gardevoir for teleportation. Soon, they arrived at the center of Alto Mare, where the "Sanctuary" and the "Sun Tower," as the locals called them, stood. The Sanctuary was the destination of the treasure hunt.
After paying 50 Pokédollars for admission, Chris stepped inside and immediately spotted the treasure he sought—a set of well-preserved Aerodactyl fossils. Not only that, but next to them was a complete set of Kabutops fossils.
"Two at once?" Chris exclaimed, taking a deep breath.
The better-preserved the fossils, the greater the potential of the resurrected Pokémon. With fossils this complete, their stats were bound to be excellent—perhaps not perfect 6V, but at least 4V or 5V.
Chris chuckled to himself. "Isn't this exactly what I wanted? Aerodactyl, you're coming with me!"
However, there was a problem—these treasures were housed in a museum. "If only this were the game interface," Chris muttered. In the game, he could simply collect such items as ownerless treasures. But in this real-world scenario, taking them outright was impossible. Even the Dowsing Machine wouldn't change that.
Chris pondered his options until a rotund, bald man with a white beard approached him.
"Hello, I'm Lorenzo, the museum director. Is there something I can help you with?"
Chris considered for a moment and asked, "How much would it cost to purchase the Aerodactyl fossil?"
He decided that money was the best route. Treating this world as real meant negotiating with the museum for ownership. While this might be unusual in places like China, in other regions—especially those with a more liberal fossil trade—buying fossils was normal.
Lorenzo raised an eyebrow, surprised. "Why do you want to purchase this fossil?"
"I plan to resurrect it into a Pokémon for breeding," Chris replied honestly.
Lorenzo nodded thoughtfully. He was aware of the technology to revive Pokémon from fossils. "However," he added, "this Aerodactyl is one of the evil Pokémon that attacked Alto Mare and was defeated by Latias and Latios. If it were resurrected..."
Chris interrupted, curious. "Wait, how long has it been since Latias and Latios defeated the evil Pokémon?"
"One thousand one hundred and thirty-two years," Lorenzo answered proudly. While most residents considered the tale a legend, Lorenzo, as a descendant of those who had direct contact with Latias and Latios, knew the exact details.
Chris smirked. "Then let me ask you this—how long does it take for fossils to form?"
Lorenzo was caught off guard by the sudden question.
It wasn't about the typical process of fossilization. Instead, Chris had pointed out a flaw in his earlier claim. Based on Lorenzo's account, Latias and Latios defeated the evil Pokémon over a thousand years ago. But that timeframe wasn't long enough for a Pokémon skeleton to fossilize naturally.
"So," Chris concluded, "this is just an ordinary Aerodactyl fossil."
Lorenzo hesitated, sensing that Chris's reasoning was sound, and eventually nodded in agreement.
"Can it be sold now?" Chris pressed.
Lorenzo groaned in response. "I'm not short of money," he replied gruffly.
Chris froze for a moment, then remembered Lorenzo's significance. He was one of the key supporting characters in the theatrical storyline. His ancestors had helped Latias and Latios, and in return, the Legendary Pokémon had come to their aid when Alto Mare was attacked by evil Pokémon. Over the centuries, this lineage had built a large and prosperous museum. Claiming poverty seemed implausible for someone like Lorenzo.
However, Lorenzo's tone softened. "That said, since it's just an ordinary Aerodactyl fossil, I think it would be better for it to soar freely in the blue sky again rather than remain here as a lifeless exhibit."
He studied Chris for a moment before adding, "You're clearly a wealthy man if you're here to buy such a fossil. Thirty million Pokédollars—no problem, right?"
"Not at all!" Chris agreed enthusiastically.
Was thirty million a steep price? Not at all! In fact, Chris considered it a bargain. In the real-world market, Aerodactyl fossils—and their resurrection—could easily cost tens of millions. Chris, who already owned a large number of fossils stored in his collection, saw this as an opportunity. Once his Pokémon breeding hut was operational, he could revive Aerodactyl and sell it for an astronomical profit.
Ordinarily, incomplete fossils would be used for revival, which resulted in subpar Pokémon. But this fossil was complete—an incredible find. For 30 million Pokédollars, it was an absolute steal. Chris had been prepared to pay up to 200 million for something this rare.
"This..." Chris paused, his mind racing with possibilities. "Since the Aerodactyl fossils are sold, are the Kabutops fossils available too?"
Lorenzo shook his head firmly. "Kabutops' fossils are not for sale. My granddaughter is preparing to travel and study art in another region. I intend to revive the fossils into Pokémon for her self-defense."
His refusal left Chris no choice but to relent. Besides, Kabutops wasn't particularly appealing to him anyway. Aerodactyl was the real prize.
