Chapter 117: Chapter 117: Forced Awakening
"Charmeleon, use Flamethrower!" Kalia commanded loudly. The special training from yesterday would now be put to the test. With Pokemon capable of initiating moves without Trainer commands, it saved valuable time.
Moka, who had been rambling earlier, swiftly responded with his order, appearing unusually relaxed.
"Umbreon, use Quick Attack to close in on Charmeleon, then Bite!"
Employing the same strategy as against Grovyle, although Bite wasn't Umbreon's strongest move, Moka's Umbreon hadn't yet learned Double-Edge. It only knew Take Down, which while more powerful than Bite, carried significant recoil damage as a drawback.
Meanwhile, Lian was ready to attempt combining Flamethrower and Dragon Rage for the first time. Having improved his control over Dragon-type energy and practiced this combo extensively, he felt eager to give it a try.
As Umbreon unleashed Quick Attack, rapidly charging towards him, Lian knew better than to rely on luck this time. He vividly remembered his encounter with Tanner's Umbreon.
In the next instant, Lian burst with speed, charging directly towards the opposite end of the battlefield. He wouldn't allow Umbreon to easily close the distance; Quick Attack's speed boost was temporary unless Umbreon wasted time continually using it.
During their previous battle, Lian had not been as decisive. Moka watched in surprise as Charmeleon suddenly accelerated, outrunning even Umbreon's Quick Attack.
Lian quickly opened up significant distance, and Umbreon did not manage to catch up. In terms of pure speed ability, Umbreon couldn't match Lian, falling far behind despite utilizing Quick Attack.
Once the burst of speed faded, Lian stopped, opened his mouth, and unleashed a fiery orange-red Flamethrower like a blazing inferno, hurtling straight towards Umbreon.
At this moment, the Flamethrower was still conventional, but with Lian having achieved a 15% Energy Control Rating, one could observe a slight swirling motion within the flames.
This effect resulted from Lian's deliberate control, emphasizing that training for Energy Control cannot solely rely on system space or Combat Point increases; practical combat practice is also essential.
By adding rotation to the Flamethrower's flames, they become more concentrated rather than dispersing widely.
Though it may not seem significant now, this was just the beginning. With daily combat practice, releasing Flamethrower tens or even hundreds of times, there would eventually be a noticeable transformation.
The vibrant orange flames fiercely engulfed Umbreon, immersing it in scorching heat waves.
Once the flames subsided, Umbreon's body showed burn marks all over, but fortunately, it did not enter a Burned state - likely the best possible outcome.
Lian was indeed concerned about Umbreon getting Burned, as that would trigger its Synchronize Ability. If he came into contact with Umbreon, the Burned condition would be transferred to him.
In such a scenario, although not as debilitating as Paralysis, Lian lacked any moves to recover from status conditions. The continuous loss of stamina due to being Burned would ultimately render him unable to continue battling effectively.
Immediately after using Flamethrower, Lian opened his mouth again. With his Dragon-type Energy Control Rating reaching 9%, the speed at which he could gather Dragon-type energy had significantly increased.
In the next second, Lian unleashed Dragon Rage, sending out a wave of furious energy rapidly towards his opponent.
"What's happening?"
Moka was caught off guard when Charmeleon, without any command from its Trainer, swiftly followed up Flamethrower with Dragon Rage immediately after.
"Great job, Charmeleon!" Kalia was momentarily stunned before exclaiming with delight. The speed at which Charmeleon executed this combo far exceeded her expectations.
"Umbreon, dodge Dragon Rage and use Rest!" Moka shouted decisively at the critical moment. Although he believed Umbreon could withstand the combo, even if it did, sustaining severe injuries was inevitable.
The fierce shockwave surged towards Umbreon. Despite Moka's swift command, Lian unleashed Dragon Rage too rapidly. Umbreon attempted to evade but, having just endured the Flamethrower impact, hadn't fully recovered—how could it possibly dodge?
Umbreon flew like a puppet cut from its strings, crashing onto the ground. Surprisingly, despite taking both Flamethrower and Dragon Rage, Umbreon had not yet lost its ability to battle. Though visibly battered, it defiantly stood back up.
Despite Umbreon boasting a Special Defense base stat of 130, Lian's Special Attack power was formidable, compounded by the earlier damage inflicted by Grovyle. Yet, remarkably, Umbreon still managed to remain combat-ready.
Amazed, Lian watched as Umbreon stood there, closed its eyes, and fell into sleep. As it entered this state, the injuries on its body gradually began to heal.
Fortunately, while Umbreon was asleep, it had no means of defense, allowing Lian an opportunity to accumulate more Combat Points during this vulnerable period.
Kalia shared no concern either, knowing well that when using Rest, the Pokemon becomes helpless against opponents' attacks. Although suitable for defensive powerhouses like Umbreon, Charmeleon's Special moves could inflict significant damage during this time.
"Charmeleon, use Flamethrower."
At this moment, Charmeleon could once again employ Flamethrower. After casting Flamethrower, it would be ready to follow up with Dragon Rage immediately. Unless Umbreon swiftly awakens, it wouldn't withstand such intense offensive maneuvers.
As Moka saw Umbreon fall asleep, his expression returned to normal, revealing a confident smile, seemingly unconcerned about the sleeping Umbreon being under attack.
"Wake up, Umbreon!" Moka shouted loudly.
In the next second, Umbreon abruptly opened its eyes, instantly emerging from the sleep state.
"Why did it wake up so quickly?" Kalia was taken aback as Umbreon unexpectedly roused from sleep, despite having just closed its eyes for a brief moment.
"My Umbreon has undergone special training; it doesn't need to wait for natural awakening and can easily snap out of sleep," Moka boasted proudly. His Umbreon had received unique conditioning, allowing it to forcibly awaken upon hearing any significant sound while asleep.
This specialized training took him several months to accomplish with Umbreon.
At the time, he was immensely thrilled, knowing that combining Umbreon's formidable defensive capabilities with this exceptional skill virtually rendered it invincible.
Kalia slightly furrowed her brow, sensing something amiss with Umbreon. As she observed it closely, she detected traces of fatigue, indicating that Umbreon's awakening was not normal.
However, Kalia couldn't voice her concerns, recognizing this as an issue between Moka and his Umbreon. Nonetheless, during battles, such forced awakenings could indeed be highly advantageous.
"Umbreon, dodge Flamethrower, use Quick Attack to close the gap with Charmeleon, then employ Bite!" Moka issued another command.
Simultaneously, Lian unleashed Flamethrower, sending intense orange-red flames shooting forth.
