Chapter 148: Chapter 148: The Safari Zone
"Why? Do you think I can't afford it?"
"If that's the case, rest assured. Our Wade family's real estate business has expanded from Fuchsia City into Vermilion and Celadon. We've secured a strong market presence in both regions."
"So, money and resources won't be an issue. Additionally, I can offer you a position as a retainer for our family. You'll receive a steady flow of resources each month with no obligations—except to provide assistance should our family face a crisis."
"What do you think? Do you have any other concerns?"
After highlighting his family's influence and the benefits he could offer, Dunn Wade waited patiently for Ron's response.
From past experience, Dunn had rarely encountered talented trainers—whether at mid Elite or low Elite levels—who refused his offers. Most either joined his family outright or accepted the resources as a gesture of goodwill.
He was confident this time would be no different. Especially since he had sweetened the deal significantly, what reason could Ron possibly have to turn down such an advantageous offer?
"No reason—I refuse."
Despite the faint undertone of threat in Dunn's voice, Ron rejected him outright without hesitation.
From the moment Dunn had recognized him and brazenly proposed buying the Qualification Badge, Ron had already made up his mind to refuse.
For starters, as someone widely recognized as part of the rangers, Ron's every action was under potential scrutiny.
While he could evade surveillance in the wilderness with the help of Kirlia's psychic abilities, they were currently in a League-sanctioned Certification Center. It was highly likely that someone was already watching him.
Selling the badge to Dunn wouldn't just risk exposure—it would hand Dunn's backers leverage over him.
Selling an official League-issued Qualification Badge could lead others to question his integrity. If he was willing to sell this, who's to say he wouldn't betray the League for greater profit in the future?
More importantly, those desperate to qualify for the Indigo Plateau Conference would direct their grievances toward Ron. It wouldn't take much for the public to turn against him.
Not only would other League trainers condemn him, but the League itself would surely take punitive action.
The Indigo Plateau Conference is the League's fairest platform for selecting new talent. Any actions like selling Qualification Badges or Gym Badges would result in immediate disqualification from the competition.
Ron was already navigating a precarious situation. Adding this to his troubles would be disastrous. Without the protection of his ranger status and reputation, he wouldn't last long before being pressured into revealing his training methods for Six Powers.
In a worst-case scenario, Ron could even be eliminated in secret—either to silence him or prevent him from retaliating against the League out of spite.
These weren't paranoid delusions but very real possibilities.
Compared to the value of his life and mastery of the Navy's Six Powers, Dunn could offer his entire family's fortune, and Ron still wouldn't accept.
Besides, it was clear that Dunn's intentions weren't pure. He wanted to exploit Ron's reputation for his own gain, which only made Ron's refusal more resolute.
"Can you at least tell me why? Or hear me out on the rewards I'm offering?"
Caught off guard by Ron's unwavering rejection, Dunn quickly tried to salvage the situation.
"I said no. Now move aside!"
Frustrated by Dunn's persistence, Ron's tone turned cold as he let his killing intent slip.
Since his arrival in this world, countless people had died directly or indirectly by Ron's hands. This had honed a sharp aura of menace that surfaced whenever he was angered.
For someone like Dunn—coddled and accustomed to a life of luxury—this was more than enough to silence him.
An icy sensation crawled over Dunn's skin, leaving his words stuck in his throat.
After a brief, cutting glance at Dunn's two bodyguards, Ron walked away.
If Dunn chose to let the matter drop, that would be ideal. But if he resorted to underhanded tactics, Ron was ready to respond in kind.
"Find others willing to sell their Qualification Badges."
"And have someone follow him. Don't act rashly for now."
Regaining his composure, Dunn spoke to his bodyguards, forcing himself to appear calm and unbothered.
One of the guards exchanged a glance with his partner before leaving to carry out Dunn's orders.
As per the head of the Wade family's instructions, Dunn's current actions were still within acceptable bounds, so neither guard intervened.
Unaware of the guards' quiet coordination, Dunn was caught in indecision—unsure whether to make a move against Ron.
His hesitation wasn't just due to Ron's killing intent but also Ron's reputation and strength.
Dunn had done his homework on Ron, believing him to be indifferent toward the Qualification Badge and thus an easy target for negotiation.
Now that the talks had collapsed, Dunn refused to admit fault, blaming Ron's lack of cooperation instead.
However, acting against Ron required sending top-tier mid Elite or even high Elite trainers—assets any organization would guard jealously.
While Dunn, as the second son of the Wade family, had some authority, his older brother had already been groomed as the heir, managing significant portions of their family's business.
This left Dunn with limited resources, able to recruit only low Elite or freshly promoted mid Elite trainers.
His two bodyguards, though high Elite trainers, were assigned by his father for protection and not under his command to act offensively.
However, Dunn could still instruct them to monitor Ron's movements.
While Dunn schemed, Ron set off for his next destination—the Safari Zone.
Ron wasn't heading there to train Machamp and the others but to try his luck finding a Dragonair in the wild.
Of course, this was more of a hopeful gamble.
The Safari Zone in real life was far from its anime counterpart. If Dragonair truly inhabited the area, Ron doubted that a certain Dragon-type specialist—who was, in reality, more of a Flying-type trainer—wouldn't have already made an appearance.
With this in mind, Ron continued his leisurely journey, allowing his Pokémon plenty of time to train along the way.
