Chapter 20: Team Rocket and Return
With everything ready, Victor and the siblings approach Andrew and Nurse Joy.
"Hey, Grandpa, they accepted," says Victor, pointing to Azami, Lakin, and Tyson.
"Hello, Mr. Andrew," says Lakin with a nod.
"Hi, sir," says Azami with a smile.
"Good morning, Mr. Andrew," says Tyson with a grin.
Looking at the kids, Andrew chuckles good-naturedly and asks,
"Good morning, kids. So, shall we get going?"
"Alright." (4x)
After saying goodbye to Nurse Joy, the five leave the Pokémon Center and head to the truck.
"Hop in," says Andrew as he opens the back door for the three siblings.
"Thanks for the ride." (3x)
The siblings express their gratitude as they climb in—Tyson on the right, Azami in the middle, and Lakin on the left.
After the siblings, Andrew and Victor get into the car.
Driving, they leave Violet City behind.
Noticing the silence on the road, Andrew tries to start a conversation.
"So, kids. What were you doing in Violet City? Mrs. Rosa said you didn't say why you came here."
The three exchange glances before Tyson speaks up,
"We already told Victor. Why are you guys keeping it a secret? Besides, it's Mr. Black—he's very respected in town. No reason not to tell. You guys are way too suspicious."
Azami pouts, looking offended, while Lakin tilts his head, thinks for a moment, and then shrugs.
Seeing their reactions, Tyson shakes his head and explains,
"We came to sell some things from the forest at the bazaar. We want to save up for our journey."
"Oh… that's a very responsible attitude. You three are already ten, right? When do you plan to start your journey?" Andrew praises before asking.
"A month or two, at most," Lakin replies succinctly.
Tyson and Azami nod in confirmation.
"Hmm… a good plan. After all, it's always wise to delay the journey a little and build a stronger foundation before setting out," Andrew comments, a nostalgic tone in his voice as he reminisces.
"Mr. Black, were you a trainer?" Tyson asks, curious.
"I was, a long time ago," Andrew replies with a distant look.
"Are you okay, Grandpa?" Victor asks with slight concern.
"I'm fine, brat. Just remembering some things," Andrew says with a smile as he looks at Victor. Then, turning to Tyson and the others, he continues,
"I was part of the Bureau of Investigation. My job was to investigate Kanto's criminal underworld. Thinking back, we got into all sorts of trouble just to gather evidence, huhuhuhohoho," he finishes with a chuckle.
"So, were you like Crobatman?" Tyson asks, eyes sparkling.
'What? Does that really exist? If I remember correctly, there was Gligarman in the Johto season of the anime. But Crobatman… seriously…' Victor thinks, amused by the absurdity of his thoughts.
"No, I was… a Crobatman?" Andrew responds, both amused and confused, momentarily glancing at the kids before refocusing on the road.
As Andrew looks ahead, he suddenly sees something that forces him to slam on the brakes.
A few dozen meters ahead, two Pokémon stand in the road—Arbok and Nidoking.
But that wasn't what made Andrew's expression change. No, what made his expression darken were the men dressed in dark clothing standing behind the Pokémon. The most striking feature of their outfits was the bold red "R" emblazoned on their uniforms.
"Team Rocket…" Andrew murmurs through gritted teeth, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
'He's angry… really angry', Victor thinks as he watches his grandfather's expression.
Normally cheerful, with a half-smile on his face, Andrew's expression had now turned cold and grim, his eyes locked onto the men in the road.
"Hey, you in the car! Get out and hand over your Pokémon!" one of the Team Rocket grunts shouts.
"Are you deaf? Get out now!" the other yells impatiently.
"Was the sacrifice that my team and I made all for nothing?" Andrew mutters, his voice breaking slightly, revealing his complex emotions.
Fuooo…
Taking a deep breath, Andrew steps out of the vehicle, his voice firm.
"Kids, stay in the car. That's an order."
"Hey, old man. You'd better hand over your Pokémon quietly, and maybe—just maybe—we won't kill you," the first grunt sneers arrogantly as Andrew exits the truck. He is taller and well-muscled.
The other, a shorter and stockier man with a scruffy beard, places a hand on Arbok's back as the snake Pokémon hisses at Andrew.
"Arbo…"
"Nido…"
Seeing Andrew step out, Nidoking senses something dangerous and tries to warn its trainer.
Noticing Nidoking's reaction, the muscular grunt pays closer attention to Andrew.
"Wait!"
"You know, over thirty years ago, there was a war—a war between the League and Kanto's criminal underworld. One organization, in particular, spread like a cancer," Andrew says seriously, shaking his head as if recalling something.
Pausing briefly, Andrew quickly pulls out two Poké Balls and tosses them.
"Stout!"
"Ursar!"
In front of Andrew, Stoutland and Ursaring appear, letting out powerful roars.
Standing before Andrew, Stoutland lowers the front of its body slightly, ready to attack at any moment.
Further ahead, an enormous Ursaring with a scar over its right eye stands tall, preparing for battle.
But as it locks eyes with the grunts, it freezes. Its eyes begin to glow red.
"Ursaring, focus," Andrew commands, noticing his Pokémon's reaction.
The order snaps Ursaring out of it, and it focuses on the Pokémon ahead.
Inside the truck, the four children watch Stoutland and Ursaring with admiration.
But Victor is focused on something else. He rarely went near the valley where Ursaring lived, but now that he was seeing it up close, he could tell—Ursaring's aura was different from Stoutland's. Wilder. Stronger.
'I can't gauge levels when Pokémon reach the Pseudo-Elite stage, like Stoutland, whose potential is light blue. But Grandpa's Ursaring… it's not a Pseudo-Elite. No, it's stronger. A true Elite. With pink potential,' Victor thinks, staring at Ursaring in shock.
"Impressive," Victor blurts out without meaning to.
"Yeah, look at that Ursaring," Tyson says, eyes wide.
"So much power…" Lakin murmurs, impressed.
"Such beautiful fur," Azami says sweetly, admiring Stoutland.
'Seriously? That's what you noticed?'Victor thinks, giving Azami a "really?" look before turning back to the imminent battle.
'Nidoking, level 43, green potential. Arbok, level 41, green potential. Grandpa can handle this', Victor analyzes the battlefield.
"That war took so much from me… And when we captured Lady Boss, I thought it was over," Andrew sighs, grabbing another Poké Ball and releasing a Noctowl.
"Protect them," he commands.
"Noctowl"
Obeying, Noctowl perches on the truck's hood, its eyes glowing as it conjures a mass of psychic energy.
Suddenly, the psychic energy forms into barriers—Reflect.
With the children protected, Andrew turns his full attention to the Team Rocket grunts. Even if they weren't a real threat to him, life had taught him to always be prepared.
"So, you filthy rats… Your presence here can only mean one thing—Team Rocket has returned," Andrew says, pointing at them. "You're going to answer all my questions."
"In your dreams, old man," the muscular grunt growls, signaling Nidoking.
"Nidoking, Poison Jab!"
"Nido!"
Roaring, Nidoking charges at Andrew, its fist coated in venomous energy.
"Arbok, Sludge Bomb!"
"Bok..."
Arbok gathers poison in its mouth and spits it toward Andrew.
"Grandpa!"
Seeing Nidoking running toward him, Andrew commands,
"Stoutland, use Rock Tomb to block the poison. Ursaring, use Rock Slide to slow Nidoking down."
"Stoutland..."
Following the orders, Stoutland stomps hard on the ground with its front paws, causing rocks to rise from the ground and block the poison while also hitting Arbok.
"Arbok..."
"Urs!"
Ursaring then creates a large rock, launching it into the air, where it shatters into many pieces, falling toward Nidoking.
"Nido..."
"The classic muscle-headed fighter. He has decent strength but doesn't know how to use it. Rushing into a direct attack is foolish when you don't even know your opponent's strength. The other one was a bit smarter—realizing the difference in power, he tried to keep his distance," Andrew says, unimpressed by their battle style. He then continues, "Even after years, decades, you never change. You remain the same cancer you've always been. Still nothing but filthy rats."
"It's time to end this. Ursaring, use Scary Face to slow them down, then finish Nidoking with High Horsepower!" Andrew orders, wanting to wrap things up quickly. "Stoutland, take down Arbok with Psychic Fangs!"
Following the command, Ursaring's eyes glow as it makes a terrifying face, startling Arbok and Nidoking and slowing their movements.
"Ursaring!"
Covering its body in Ground-type energy, Ursaring charges at Nidoking, striking it brutally.
"Niiidoooo..."
Hit with overwhelming force, Nidoking succumbs to its injuries and faints.
Meanwhile, Stoutland approaches Arbok with its mouth covered in psychic energy, forming a massive, glowing pink jaw that bites down on Arbok, tearing into its scales.
"ARBOK!"
Arbok hisses in agony from the bite.
"Land..."
Despite Arbok's resistance, Stoutland growls and starts shaking its head, flinging Arbok back and forth, slamming it against the ground.
Soon, Arbok's eyes turn into spirals.
"That's enough, Stoutland," Andrew says, prompting Stoutland to release Arbok.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Andrew warns upon noticing the opponents reaching for more Poké Balls.
Seeing Ursaring nearby, they raise their hands in surrender.
"URSARING!!!"
Ursaring rushes up to them, grabs them both, and roars furiously in their faces.
"HELP!" (x2)
Andrew watches coldly before turning to Victor as he hears his voice.
"Grandpa!"
Turning around, Andrew sees Victor standing outside the car with the door open.
Victor nods toward him, signaling Andrew to follow. Andrew does so and spots the orphanage siblings, frightened as they watch Azami shrink back from Ursaring's aggression.
"Ursaring, that's enough!" Andrew shouts, seeing Ursaring preparing a Slash attack.
Hearing Andrew's words, Ursaring's eyes clear, and it looks at Andrew. Seeing him gesture with his head, Ursaring turns and notices the terrified children in the back seat.
"Urs..."
Sighing, Ursaring shakes its head, dispersing the cutting energy from its claws.
"Just knock them out and bring them to me," Andrew instructs while walking to the back of the truck, grabbing two ropes.
(>-<#) "Urs Ursa"
With Ursaring bringing the captives to the truck bed, Andrew confiscates and locks their Poké Balls. He also recalls Arbok and Nidoking before tying the captives up with the ropes.
"Toss them in the back," Andrew says, looking at the unconscious grunts.
"Urs."
THUD THUD
Following the order, Ursaring throws them into the truck bed like sacks of potatoes.
Lifting its head, Ursaring notices three curious faces peeking from the back seat. Seeing them watching, Ursaring tries to smile, but since it's not used to it, the result is a rather awkward expression.
Startled by Ursaring's strange smile, the children shrink back.
"Urs?" (0.o?)
Seeing their reaction, Ursaring tilts its head in confusion.
"Let's go. Stoutland, hop in the back and keep an eye on them."
"Stout."
Recalling Ursaring and Noctowl, Andrew tells Stoutland to guard the grunts.
"Let's get moving," Andrew says, getting into the car.
Glancing at the children, he resumes driving toward Purple Town.
Upon arriving, he first heads to Miss Rosa's orphanage to drop off the orphans.
"Thank you for the ride, Mr. Black, Victor." (x3)
The three siblings express their gratitude as they step out of the car.
"You're welcome, kids."
"No problem, guys. We'll see each other again. And Tyson, think about what we talked about," Victor says with a smile, waving at them.
Inside the car, Victor looks at Andrew. "To the police station?"
"Yeah, I need to have a talk with Officer Jenny," Andrew replies in a serious tone.
Driving to the station, Andrew gets out, recalls Stoutland, and releases Ursaring to carry the Team Rocket grunts.
"Stay in the car. I'll be right back," Andrew tells Victor before heading inside.
"Jenny, we need to talk," Andrew says upon spotting Officer Jenny at the reception desk.
"Team Rocket?" Officer Jenny asks, a bit startled upon recognizing the grunts' uniforms as Ursaring carries them in.
"Yeah, they tried to rob us on the way back from Violet City," Andrew explains calmly as Ursaring hands over the two grunts.
"But I thought you and the Bureau had taken them down," Jenny says while taking custody of the grunts and instructing officers to lock them up.
Andrew remains silent for a moment, contemplating his response.
After a brief pause, he sighs and says, "I'm too old for this."
"Jenny, can you notify the League to have the Bureau of Investigation and the Elites on standby?"
"Understood, Investigator Black," Jenny responds, saluting.
"I'm not an investigator anymore, Jenny," Andrew replies, shaking his head.
"Keep me updated. See you later, Jenny," Andrew says, taking his leave.
Returning to the car, Andrew looks at Victor, Sentret, and Marill before asking, "Shall we head home?"
"Yeah, it's been a long two days."
"Sentret Sent!"
"Marill Mari Rill!"
