Chapter 2: Chapter 63: Who is Better at Improvised Performances +2
The two of them lay in their respective beds. He Fang was playing a game of Landlords (a popular card game), while Qin Guanglin lay on his side, pretending to play, occasionally breaking into a silly grin.
It turned out that she liked to prop her pillow up behind her and half-lie down on the bed, playing with her phone.
Her serious little face was so cute, even when she frowned at a bad hand.
"Are you done staring?" He Fang raised her eyelids and glanced at him.
Qin Guanglin chuckled twice. "We're living together now."
"And then?"
"Nothing more. I'm just happy."
He Fang rolled her eyes, put her phone down, and lay down. "Go to sleep quickly, we still have to go out tomorrow."
"Yeah, let's sleep together."
Qin Guanglin shifted, laying flat with his hands over his stomach, adopting a stiff, proper posture like a corpse, preparing to sleep.
But as soon as he closed his eyes, a huge rabbit with red eyes appeared in his mind.
That wouldn't do. He opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling, trying to push the image out of his mind. Otherwise, even if he fell asleep, he'd have some bizarre dreams.
Maybe it was because he'd slept a little earlier, but Qin Guanglin didn't feel tired at all. He lay stiffly on the bed, reciting old poems in his mind, trying not to glance at the other bed.
The person on the other bed also didn't sleep well. Every so often, she'd toss and turn, and it seemed like she was also having trouble sleeping.
Time passed second by second. Qin Guanglin could hear her turning over and almost wanted to talk to her, but then he thought better of it—it would make it even harder to sleep. It was better to chat during the day, at night, they should get some rest for tomorrow.
"Qin, are you awake?" He Fang whispered.
He was about to respond but stopped himself. He didn't want to disturb their plans for tomorrow. Chatting could wait, but they needed to sleep early to have energy tomorrow.
A sound came from the other bed, as if He Fang had gotten up. He could hear soft footsteps.
"Mr. Qin?"
This time, her voice was right next to him. "Are you awake?"
Qin Guanglin's heart skipped a beat. Was she trying to kiss him in the middle of the night? He steadied his breath, closed his eyes again, and tried to make himself appear asleep.
"Are you really asleep?" He Fang asked again, her voice soft. After a pause, she quietly slid his arm away from her, and the bed made a small noise as she squeezed in beside him.
She rested her head on his arm, snuggling into him. He Fang let out a long breath. Now, she should be able to sleep well.
Qin Guanglin's heart was racing. He lay still, too afraid to move. The scent of shampoo wafted from beside him, and he wondered if he was dreaming.
No, he never even imagined such a thing in his dreams.
She sneaked into his bed in the middle of the night…
Her breathing became steady and deep, and in a short while, she was fast asleep. Qin Guanglin still lay stiff, afraid to move in case he disturbed her.
He suddenly wanted to check Baidu (China's search engine) to see how to handle this situation. His favorite person was lying beside him, and now, he couldn't sleep at all.
He didn't know how much time passed, but eventually, he dared to move slightly, pretending to roll over. He then gently placed his other hand on her back, letting out a soft sigh.
It was comfortable.
Qin Guanglin opened his eyes in the dark, trying to look at her, but the light was too dim to see clearly. He could only feel her warm, gentle breath on his arm.
This stubborn woman, who had said she would kick him out, was now sneaking into his bed.
Turns out, people who like each other think the same way. He had thought about it, and she had too—just too shy to admit it.
Lost in his thoughts, Qin Guanglin couldn't tell whether he had actually fallen asleep, but he kept opening his eyes every now and then to check on her, even if all he could see was her silhouette. It gave him a sense of peace.
He Fang moved slightly, and he immediately opened his eyes, waiting for her to make another move before he would close them again.
This half-awake, half-asleep state lasted until the sky began to brighten. He Fang moved again, and Qin Guanglin instinctively opened his eyes. Seeing that she was about to wake up, he quickly pretended to be asleep again.
He felt her shift and hold him tighter, and after a brief moment, she kissed him on the cheek. Then, she carefully pulled his hand off her back, quietly got out of bed, and crawled back to her own side.
Qin Guanglin lay perfectly still, pretending to be asleep. Now wasn't the time to call her out—it would just embarrass her. What if she got mad and didn't come back to his bed that night?
Just as he thought she had returned to her own bed, he felt his hand being grabbed again. She gently tugged it towards her, rubbing it on her calf before placing it back on the bed.
"Did you enjoy that, pig hoof?" He Fang whispered, humming softly, then leaned down to kiss him again.
Qin Guanglin was stunned. Did she realize he was pretending to sleep?
After a brief inner struggle, he simply opened his eyes—there was no point in pretending anymore.
He Fang jumped a little, startled. "When did you wake up?"
Qin Guanglin blinked in confusion, staring at her for a moment before saying, "You woke me up when you kissed me."
So she hadn't realized after all… might as well keep pretending.
"What's going on here?" he rubbed his eyes, acting groggy.
"I just went to the bathroom... since you were sleeping so soundly, I thought I'd reward you." He Fang gave him a suspicious look. "Really just woke up?"
"Did you do anything before I woke up?" Qin Guanglin asked, feigning confusion.
"No, how could I?" He Fang shrugged nonchalantly, then turned and lay back down on her own bed. "It's still early, let's sleep."
Qin Guanglin stretched and rubbed his arm, muttering to himself, "My arm is so sore."
"You shouldn't sleep with your arm under you," He Fang glanced at him. "Of course, it's going to hurt if you sleep like that."
"Oh, I see." Qin Guanglin nodded, pretending to understand.
This woman really knew how to play it cool.
"Last night, I dreamt I was holding you," he said, pulling the blanket up to his neck and peeking out at her.
He Fang snuggled deeper into her blanket, leaving only her head visible. "You and your weird dreams."
"It wasn't weird. I was just holding you, nothing else," Qin Guanglin tried to keep a straight face, worried he might laugh.
This girlfriend of his was so cute—she had done everything but was too shy to admit it.
"You dream about what you think about all day. Don't think I don't know what you're thinking," He Fang said, pretending nothing had happened.
"Can I come over to your side?"
"No, don't even think about it."
"Okay."
Qin Guanglin couldn't help but smile to himself. After all, she'd be sneaking over later.
"What's so funny?" He Fang eyed him suspiciously. "Why are you smiling?"
"I remembered something that made me happy."
"What's that?"
"Well... I'm almost up to 100,000 beans in that game."
"That quickly?"
By now, it was just starting to get light, and the sun hadn't risen yet. The two of them lay across the room from each other, side by side, chatting casually.
