Chapter 55: Open the door!
The Wildman who was tanking in the front wobbled and sat down on the ground with a thump. The metal shield on his chest had been beaten out of shape, and the hydraulic cylinders on his right arm's exoskeleton had burst. His whole body was a mess of bruises.
Even though it didn't hurt, he was weakened and exhausted.
"Damn! This fucking BOSS is so hard to kill, high HP and high damage, with strong mobility, it's a total shitshow."
The burly man with a beard in front of him was already dead. His arms were shattered by bullets, and the internal metal muscle wires scattered around like broken springs. His body was full of bullet holes and arrow wounds.
Brother Ni was leaning against the wall, gasping for breath, "Lucky that bastard only had a handgun. If he had swapped it for the shotgun we saw earlier, at least two of us would be dead."
Winston was also worried about the big shield in the Wildman's hand. Even small steel balls with high propellant couldn't penetrate it. This set of exoskeleton was something he had never seen before, so he brought a large-caliber handgun for flexibility, yet he still couldn't escape death.
From Brother Ni and the others' perspective, Winston was just a shit monster, and from Winston's perspective, the players were no less shitty.
The exoskeletons were so firm that even with a full-strength kick he couldn't topple the shield-bearing Wildman. This bunch of fuckers didn't hesitate a second in interaction; they punched his chest without losing breath and shoved guns into his face.
"Don't waste time, we have to hurry back, or those monsters will all be killed by them and we'll lose big."
The giant helped the fallen Wildman to his feet. Cleaning the battlefield was a task for later; now wasn't the time to be greedy.
"You broke all this great equipment, will we end up paying during the settlement later? Damn."
"I don't think so..."
The Wildman was uncertain, but just as they were about to leave, they heard a rustling noise from the darkness, which immediately captured everyone's attention.
The Potato who had been keeping an eye on the environment finally found the light switch. When the switch was flipped, the cave instantly became much brighter, and they noticed that besides the containers of various sizes around them, there was also a mobile house ahead. The noise had come from there.
They exchanged glances and quickly grabbed their weapons, treading quietly towards it.
The Wildman's hydraulic cylinders had burst, so the giant kicked the door open and charged in with the shield up, shouting like a soldier.
"Drop your weapons and surrender! Surrender and you won't be killed!"
But no one answered. When Potato turned the light on again, they saw the moving house was a mess, and Night Wanderer was gone. There was only a blonde woman, locked in a small iron cage, wrapped in a foul-smelling dirty blanket. A chain extended from under the blanket, tying her to the iron bar of the cage...
When the light came on, she shrank back in fright, even though the space she could move in was less than two square meters.
Her hair was messy, and with her head lowered, none of them could glimpse her face.
There was not just one cage, but the other cages were all empty.
The five players looked at each other, astonished.
Potato: "Damn...what's happening here? Why is there someone here?"
Giant: "Aren't you stating the obvious, of course there are people here... The question is... what the hell is going on?"
Lin Miao didn't mention how to handle such a situation when assigning the mission, and a few players were flustered.
Even if the environment wasn't stated, players knew what had happened here; they just didn't expect to see such a scene in the game...
Water Moon Cave Heaven put down his gun, walked to the cage, squatted down, and discovered the chain wasn't tied, just wrapped around the cage. He quickly untangled it, but the woman still curled up desperately in the corner, trying to stay away from Water Moon Cave Heaven.
The deep-seated fear and dread could be felt by everyone, even though she said nothing.
They didn't know if she could understand what they were saying, so they spoke while gesturing.
"Those people are dead, you're safe now..."
"You can come out, the chain's been removed..."
But regardless of what they said, the woman didn't move a step from the cage, didn't even glance at the players. Whenever they approached, she shrank back as if frightened.
After several futile attempts, Brother Ni knew they couldn't waste more time.
"We're probably missing a key element, can't proceed with the hidden storyline..."
Giant: "I get it, like Bloodborne, we need to go to the next stage for key items and then return to find the NPC we met before, right..."
Brother Ni: "There's a possibility."
The Wildman thought leaving like this wasn't wise: "Get her some clothes from a corpse and leave them here; then let's go. We can't waste more time here, and she doesn't seem to be leaving this place anyway. We can come back for her later."
They did just that, Water Moon Cave Heaven found an intact Night Wanderer corpse and stripped it bare, kicking its naked body aside, seemingly venting his anger, and stomped twice as they passed Winston.
"Scum, damn, serves you right!"
The Wildman took the clothes and placed them on top of the cage, speaking as kindly as he could.
"I've left some clothes here for you; you should stay put and not go outside, the fighting's still going on, and it's dangerous... Understand?"
The woman barely lifted her head to glance at them, and quickly shrank back again, showing no intention of responding.
Brother Ni shrugged: "Let's go, if we wait any longer, others will complain, and might even think we're hogging the gear in here."
