Overlord: Welcome the Birth of the King

Chapter 7: Chapter 7: How to Obtain a Profession Through Unconventional Means

In the Arena.

The battle between Gazef and Brain was reaching its peak. Sparks flew as their weapons collided, and flashes of martial arts techniques lit up the arena.

Meanwhile, on Lyle's attribute panel, notifications kept appearing one after another:

[Skill 'Weakness Perception' detected. Requires Basic Warrior Profession. Current conditions unmet—]

['Genius' profession activated. Transition successful. Conditions met. Consume 1 skill point to learn this skill?]

[Skill 'Parry' detected. Requires Basic Warrior Profession. Current conditions unmet—]

['Genius' profession activated. Transition successful. Conditions met. Consume 1 skill point to learn this skill?]

[Skill 'Ability Boost' detected. Requires Basic Warrior Profession. Current conditions unmet—]

['Genius' profession activated. Transition successful. Conditions met. Consume 1 skill point to learn this skill?]

Clang! Clang!

The sound of weapons striking echoed throughout the arena.

"Unbelievable!"

"This is amazing. Gazef is so powerful to hold his own against someone like Brain, who's known as a genius swordsman!"

"I can't even follow their movements anymore!"

The previously quiet audience erupted into excited chatter as they watched the fierce battle unfold.

Lyle, however, was not watching the fight as intently as the rest. His eyes were fixed on the notifications on his attribute panel.

"Learning skills by observing others in action? That's an unexpected method to gain new abilities," he thought, his eyes gleaming with interest.

Initially, Lyle had assumed he would have to study and train like the people of this world to acquire skills. However, his discovery of the unique profession "Genius" had completely changed his approach. The potential of this profession surpassed even his wildest expectations.

As he considered the notifications, Lyle's excitement grew. However, he had to be cautious—his current skill points were limited to three.

Suddenly, another message appeared on the panel:

[Skill 'Quick Slash' detected. Requires Intermediate Profession: Swordmaster. Current conditions unmet—]

[Possession of prerequisite profession 'Genius' detected. Consume 3 skill points to learn this skill?]

Lyle's eyes narrowed slightly as he read this.

Intermediate Profession: Sword Saint?

Lyle glanced at Brain, the source of the skill in question. If he remembered correctly, Brain possessed three professions: Basic Fighter, Intermediate Sword Master, and Intermediate Sword Saint.

This notification seemed to confirm that Brain was demonstrating a skill from his Sword Saint profession.

What intrigued Lyle wasn't just the skill itself but the implications behind this system.

In YGGDRASIL, the game Lyle was familiar with, players needed to unlock a profession before gaining access to its associated skills. However, in this world, the situation was reversed: one could acquire a profession by first mastering its skills.

For instance, in the game, advanced professions like "Ninja" required players to reach at least level 60 to unlock. Here, however, such restrictions didn't exist. Simply learning a Ninja skill would grant access to the profession itself—a fact exemplified by the ninja sisters of the adamantite-ranked adventurer group, Blue Rose.

This revelation sparked an idea in Lyle's mind.

"If I learn 'Quick Slash' now, does that mean I can unlock the Intermediate Profession: Sword Saint?"

If this method worked, Lyle would have discovered a new, unconventional way to acquire professions.

Moreover, this approach—gaining professions by studying skills—was more efficient and precise than relying on equipment or external tools to unlock them. It offered a clear path to expanding his capabilities.

Although Sword Saint was merely an intermediate profession, this method suddenly made obtaining advanced professions seem much more feasible.

But what about unique professions?

The thought crossed Lyle's mind briefly, though he quickly set it aside. He had more immediate priorities to focus on.

Advanced professions are rare in the otherworld, even among its inhabitants. Attaining an advanced profession is an exceptional feat. However, special professions, though classified as advanced, differ entirely from the usual tiers of basic, intermediate, and advanced professions. In YGGDRASIL, unlocking a special profession requires fulfilling unique prerequisites—ones that often demand more than mere effort.

In fact, there's almost no shortcut to acquiring them!

In the game, every level 100 player might manage to obtain multiple advanced professions. But most players could only ever unlock a single special profession. This speaks volumes about the sheer difficulty of meeting the conditions.

Suddenly—

"Ahhh!!"

"Go! Brain! Finish it!"

The thunderous cheers jolted Lyle from his thoughts. Turning his gaze to the arena below, he focused on the match at hand.

Unconsciously, the fight had progressed further than he realized. Brain's relentless assault had already driven Gazef to the brink of defeat. The situation seemed clear—Brain was poised for victory.

Lyle took a deep breath, fixing his attention on the stage. He wanted to see if the outcome would align with the history he remembered.

In the heat of battle, Gazef, who had been holding firm against Bryan's onslaught, suddenly stumbled. It was as if his ability to retreat had been sealed off.

At that very moment—

Brain lunged forward decisively, clearly intent on ending the duel.

But then—

Brain's body froze mid-motion. In the next instant, an invisible force sent him hurtling backward, crashing onto the arena floor.

The arena, which had been roaring with cheers, fell silent in stunned disbelief.

What just happened?

Even with Lyle's current abilities, he couldn't discern the sequence of events. In truth, there were likely very few present who could.

However, amidst the confusion, Lyle glanced at his status panel.

[Skill "Fourfold Slash" detected. Requires the Warrior profession. Current conditions unmet—]

[Special profession "Genius" activated. Transformation successful. Conditions met. Consume 1 skill point to learn this skill?]

Lyle's mind relaxed slightly. Everything was unfolding precisely as he remembered it.

In the "Imperial Trials" tournament, Gazef had emerged victorious by unveiling a skill he had painstakingly developed—"Fourfold Slash."

Cheers erupted once more.

"Gazef!!"

"Gazef!!"

"Gazef!!"

The entire arena thundered with chants, the audience intoxicated with excitement.

Lyle observed the fervent spectators around him, their faces flushed with exhilaration, and exhaled softly. Returning his gaze to his status panel, he made a silent decision:

"Let's unlock the skill 'Quick Slash.'"

He was curious—could he indirectly gain access to a profession by mastering its related skills?

Additionally, since his current special profession, "Genius," provided no direct attribute bonuses, Lyle urgently needed a combat-oriented profession.

Thanks to the Genius profession's ability to temporarily adapt basic professions, he could maintain a higher degree of flexibility, even when pursuing intermediate-level professions.
