Chapter 128: The Hardness of Ice Release, and the Female Spy
The lake wasn't large; it could even be called a pond, with a depth of less than two meters. At this time, there was still some floating ice on its surface.
Kinoshita Genichi stood on the water. Ice Release chakra formed in his body and was then injected into the lake through his feet.
Crack, crackle~
The lake's surface quickly froze, the ice spreading outward. It took only three seconds to completely freeze the entire five-meter-radius surface, the ice reaching a thickness of about five centimeters.
Genichi crouched down and poked the ice with his fingers, easily creating a hole.
"The hardness isn't good enough," he shook his head. The Ice Release of the Mist-nin he had killed today could even pierce his Tailed Beast tails; its hardness was certainly far superior to his. But he had only just learned the technique, so it was normal for the temperature to be insufficient.
The hardness of ice was directly related to its temperature. At -50 degrees Celsius, the hardness of ice can reach 6 on the Mohs scale, while steel is only 4-5, and high-hardness granite is 6-7.
"It seems the development of specific jutsu is secondary. The key is to lower the temperature. I won't dream of absolute zero for now. I'll set a small goal first: -50 degrees Celsius."
And so, Genichi formed a hand seal and used the Shadow Clone Technique, creating nine clones to start working on the temperature. The lower the temperature, the more powerful any Ice Release jutsu would be. If the temperature wasn't low enough, something like an ice dragon would probably shatter on impact, making it weaker than an earth dragon. But if the ice was harder than steel, an ice armor could be impenetrable, and an ice blade could easily cut through metal and jade. Moreover, the lower the temperature, the faster the freezing speed and the greater the efficiency.
It had great potential for development in offense, defense, and even sealing arts. The power of any ninjutsu, including a Kekkei Genkai, often lay not in the technique itself, but in the person using it. The Ice Release user he had encountered today was already strong, using ice spikes to control two of his Tailed Beast tails in a water-rich environment. But it wasn't enough.
Genichi had high hopes for his Ice Release. His small goal was to be able to deal with Tailed Beasts and the Susanoo.
The night passed without incident.
The next day, at nine in the morning, Genichi arrived at the Konoha Hospital. Hōzuki Mugetsu, who had been interrogated overnight, had already been sent to Tsunade's lab. However, Tsunade wasn't there. It was wartime, and although she wasn't personally on the battlefield, as the head of the medical corps, she had too much to do.
Genichi also discovered that after the interrogation, Mugetsu seemed to have some mental problems.
"The Intelligence Division is really a bit ruthless…" Genichi shook his head to himself, but he didn't care too much. He could control him with genjutsu or the Spirit Transformation Technique anyway, so it didn't matter if his mind was addled.
"But the Intelligence Division should have gotten some information about the Hydrification Technique, right?" Genichi decided he would ask Hiruzen for it next time.
After checking on Mugetsu, Genichi took out the other "cadavers for study" and created clones to get to work. The Hydrification Technique, Ice Release, Shikotsumyaku, Dark Release… Genichi was very excited. This was all knowledge!
One after another, the Genichi clones buzzed about like diligent little bees. Whenever they made a discovery, a smile would appear on their faces, which was a bit creepy to the passing medical staff.
Unfortunately, the ninja world was not a peaceful place. Even Orochimaru couldn't conduct his research in peace, let alone Genichi. After only three days of rest, he was summoned by Hiruzen Sarutobi again.
Hokage's Office.
Genichi listened quietly to Hiruzen's arrangements.
There were two matters. The first was a reduction in his team's size. From today onward, Sarutobi Mikage, Akimichi Tōdō, and Gekkō Ryūfū would be removed from the Anbu roster and sent to reinforce the Kirigakure front. Genichi's squad would now consist of only himself and Uzumaki Ina.
The second matter was a mission. It was an infiltration mission to Iwagakure in the Land of Earth, to make contact with a spy and receive intelligence.
"Understood," Genichi accepted.
After finishing with official business, Hiruzen's expression relaxed. He took out a scroll and handed it over. "This is a portion of the data on the Hydrification Technique extracted from the Hōzuki clan prisoner's brain. A lot is missing."
"This is already very good," Genichi said quickly. "The brain is the most mysterious and fragile part of the human body."
Hiruzen took a puff of his pipe. "Genichi, the village's forces are stretched thin. I'll have to trouble you."
What could Genichi say? Of course, it was no trouble.
After leaving the Hokage's tower, he met up with Ina at the Anbu base, and the two of them left the village, heading straight for the Land of Earth. That night, they camped on the border of the Land of Fire.
Early the next morning, the two of them left the Land of Fire, traveling northwest along the border of the Land of Grass and the Land of Waterfalls. It took them only half a day to enter the Land of Earth. Genichi was extremely cautious during this process because the Cloud and Stone ninja were currently at war, with the battlefield located in the Land of Waterfalls and between their two countries.
Fortunately, both he and Ina were skilled in sensory ninjutsu and were able to avoid the warring factions, penetrating deep into the Land of Earth.
On the morning of the third day, at the crack of dawn, while it was still foggy, Genichi and Ina swaggered into Iwagakure. The gate guards were simply put under a genjutsu. However, Genichi wasn't as arrogant as Itachi and Kisame. After entering the village, he immediately used the Transformation Technique, blending in like a drop of water.
But he knew very well that during wartime, long-term infiltration was extremely difficult, even if his Water Transformation Technique could mimic chakra. Habits, personalities, and information about various individuals were a challenge. And while genjutsu could gather some information, it was limited. Infiltration wasn't hard; long-term lurk was.
Fortunately, this time he didn't need to gather intelligence himself, but just make contact with a spy. As for why they had to receive the intel in such a dangerous place, it was because during wartime, it was difficult for spies to get an opportunity to leave the village.
That day, Genichi selected a temporary target to replace: a genin named Iwaichi, who was responsible for basic security at the Iwagakure hospital. Late that night, Genichi snuck into Iwaichi's home, dealt with him, and then went to work at the hospital the next day.
Ina used Iwaichi's home as a base. During the day, she transformed into a child and left a contact marker on a tree near a playground. This was the prearranged signal.
When Genichi returned "home" that evening, Ina quickly said, "Genichi, I saw a reply when I went this afternoon. The code indicates a meeting tomorrow at 8 p.m., on the rooftop of the building across from the hospital."
Genichi nodded slightly. "Across from the hospital. Good."
"Am I going tomorrow too?" Ina asked.
"No, I'll go," Genichi shook his head. "You should find a different hiding place tomorrow as well." He had to be prepared for the possibility that this was a trap.
"Yes, sir," Ina nodded.
The night passed without incident.
The next day, Genichi went to work as usual. After getting off work, he went home as usual. At seven o'clock, he transformed into a stray cat and left, making his way to the rooftop of the building across from the hospital, where he crouched in the darkness.
Just before eight, a figure appeared on the rooftop. She was less than 1.6 meters tall, with black hair and glasses. Genichi could tell at a glance that she was using a transformation jutsu.
With a meow, Genichi leaped out of the darkness. "Root." This was the contact code.
The female spy looked down at the black cat that had appeared, stunned for a moment before replying, "Fire."
Genichi nodded. "Give me the intelligence."
The woman took out a roll of film, and Genichi took it with his cat paw.
"Wait," the spy said suddenly. "Lord Danzō promised that after this mission, he would transfer me back to the village."
Genichi stopped and looked back at her. "Lord Danzō? You're from Root. My apologies, I report directly to the Hokage."
The woman's expression fell.
Genichi suddenly said, "Although Danzō is no longer the leader of Root, since he made a promise, it is a promise from the village. However, if you are lying, I will execute you myself."
The woman was shocked. "Lord Danzō… he's already…"
"No," Genichi interrupted. "He has only stepped down from his position as the leader of Root."
The woman secretly breathed a sigh of relief. "This can be verified with Lord Danzō," she said quickly. "I am still a ninja of the village. I would not lie about such a thing. And this was an emergency mission; my cover is not perfect, and there is a risk of exposure."
Genichi nodded. "In that case, you will withdraw with us."
The woman was stunned. "Now?"
"Of course," Genichi said. "The longer we wait, the easier it is to be exposed. Do you have something else you need to take care of?"
The woman hesitated, then shook her head. "No. It's just that security is very tight during the war. It might be very dangerous for us to leave. If you give me some time, I can find a reason to leave the village for the battlefield. Then we can retreat at our leisure."
"That won't be necessary," Genichi said firmly. "Withdraw with me. I can guarantee your safety. Let's go."
With that, he reverted from his cat form. Before the woman could say anything else, he first used the Evil Sealing Method to seal her chakra, then used genjutsu to rob her of her sight, hearing, and touch, and then used the Binding God Technique to immobilize her consciousness, making it impossible for her to even speak.
After doing all this, he grabbed her by the shoulder and vanished.
