Chapter 59: Chapter 59: The Slaughter Begins
"I've changed my mind."
Vincent Fox stood beside Autumn Summer, his voice calm.
"I'm no longer heading for the provincial capital."
His original plan was to reach the port in the capital, seize a ship, and head west to the colonial powers.
But now
Vincent had a better idea.
Among all the invading empires, the island nation had inflicted the deepest wounds on Xia Nation. And it was far closer. A ship ride of just three or four days would get him there no need to cross half the world.
Autumn blinked in surprise, then smiled. "I'll follow wherever you go."
Vincent nodded, then gestured to the groaning bodies littered around them.
"Help me move these animals into the woods."
He meant the wounded soldiers, the ones still alive.
Aside from the traitor and the officer who had met their grisly ends, the rest were still breathing.
Vincent already knew their fate.
Zombie feed.
…
That night
As the moon rose, the eerie cries of the undead echoed through the woods.
Grandpa Ren had been awakened again.
Vincent repeated the same tactic: after the reanimated zombies had done their part, he and Autumn took them down one by one, splitting the kill count evenly, then piled the corpses and burned them to ash.
Zombies were notoriously hard to kill. Unless they were incinerated, there was always a chance they could rise again and spread chaos.
After the cleanup, Vincent set his sights on their next destination:
The enemy army's supply camp.
It wasn't far. Only a few dozen miles away.
He had learned of its existence from the soldiers earlier.
No prolonged interrogation had been necessary. All Vincent had to do was let Grandpa Ren sink his teeth into one of them right in front of the others and their fear did the rest.
They spilled everything.
Turns out, the outpost wasn't for fighting. Its real purpose was to secretly transport Xia Nation's treasures to the island nation, lining the pockets of high-ranking officials.
That worked out perfectly.
Vincent had plans to go to the island nation anyway so this camp was now his target.
"How are you holding up, Summer?" he asked.
Autumn Summer's face was pale and clearly exhausted.
She hadn't slept in two days and a night.
"I'm fine. I can still go on," she said softly.
Vincent didn't believe that for a second.
It wasn't just the lack of sleep. They'd been constantly on the move, burning through stamina.
He could handle it his body and spirit were far beyond normal. But Autumn? The fact she was still upright was already impressive.
"Hang in there. Once we get on a ship, you can rest properly."
…
Midnight.
Vincent stood atop a hillside, gazing down at the enemy's military outpost.
Below, lights blazed from within. Guards patrolled in shifts.
The camp was ringed with barbed wire fences, and high towers swept searchlights across the surrounding valley.
It looked like a scaled-down version of a modern military base.
To avoid detection, they had hidden the outpost in a valley, not unlike the bandit stronghold earlier.
Vincent quickly noticed something.
If he sealed both the front and rear exits, no one inside would escape.
A plan immediately formed in his mind.
"Summer, I need you to stay here and shoot out the lights. Can you handle that?"
Autumn nodded, tightening her grip on her rifle.
The weapon had been seized from the soldiers earlier.
Even without her bow, Autumn was a crack shot with firearms.
Although this was a long-range task, she felt confident.
Vincent glanced at her again. "If anyone slips past, take them down."
Autumn's heart pounded. She was nervous, but she didn't show it.
She didn't want to be useless.
Then the operation began.
Vincent somehow found a massive boulder, hefted it over his shoulder, and walked straight toward the camp.
As he approached the front gate, two guards noticed movement.
"Hey, Itō-san, I think something's out there."
"What? I don't see anything."
"It's too dark. I'll go check "
But before he could finish, Autumn made her move.
The softness in her gaze vanished, replaced by icy precision.
She took aim and fired.
Bang!
One of the spotlights shattered.
"Enemy attack!!"
"Prepare for battle!!"
Chaos erupted.
Sirens wailed.
Soldiers stumbled out of their bunks, scrambling to arm themselves.
"Where's the enemy?! Who's attacking?!"
Their answer came in the form of a giant boulder hurtling through the air.
Boom!!
It landed like a meteor, crushing a dozen soldiers instantly and blocking the only exit.
More gunshots echoed from the hilltop.
Every time a shot rang out, a light went out.
Autumn's marksmanship was unreal.
One shot, one light.
Soon, the entire camp was plunged into darkness.
The soldiers panicked, running in circles like headless chickens.
"Baka! Don't panic! Get the flashlights!!" a commanding voice barked.
But in the next breath, a shadow moved behind the officer.
He barely had time to turn before searing pain exploded in his neck and he collapsed.
The Reaper was already inside.
What followed
Was a massacre in the dark.
…
Elsewhere, Uncle Nate and his group finally arrived at the provincial capital.
