On the first platform of the training field, Smoker and Hina were already locked in an intense battle.

Both were Devil Fruit users, and their fighting styles heavily relied on their respective abilities.

However, at this point, Hina had not yet mastered Armament Haki, placing Smoker in a naturally advantageous position.

After all, Logia-types could force an even match against almost anyone.

"White Fist!"

"Cage-Cage Gun Shield!"

Smoker and Hina were extremely familiar with each other's fighting habits and styles. But in terms of raw physicality, Smoker held the edge.

"Awaken!"

Dozens of dark iron bars tried to encircle and restrain Smoker, but he effortlessly evaded the move by turning into smoke.

If the iron bars had sealed him more tightly, he might not have been able to escape even with Logia powers.

Soru!

They both instinctively used Soru to close the distance, but Smoker, with superior physical prowess, was a bit faster.

"White Fist: Finger Gun!"

Before they could clash, Smoker's fist shot out with the force of a Finger Gun, aiming to strike Hina head-on.

"Cage-Cage: Iron Body!"

Hina's body was quickly reinforced by a thick, black barrier, blocking Smoker's attack.

Since Atlas had taught them a hard lesson last time, Smoker had focused on training Finger Gun, Soru, and Iron Body, while Hina had worked more on Iron Body, Soru, and Paper Art.

Currently, Tempest Kick and Moonwalk are still too difficult for them, as both are advanced techniques that require exceptional leg strength and coordination.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Several more clashes followed, but all of Hina's attacks were dodged as Smoker turned to smoke each time.

"Yo~ What a scary little guy... a Logia-type, huh!"

The moment you heard that sly tone, you knew it was Borsalino—the infamous Kizaru. Ever the sarcastic observer.

"Logia-type Devil Fruits still have incredibly high base strength," Sengoku added with a nod. In truth, the winner of this match was evident from the start.

Even though Smoker's fruit had once been considered one of the weaker Logia types, its unreasonable intangibility still made it fearsome.

As expected, the victor was Smoker.

But he didn't come out unscathed—his uniform was torn to rags, and blood covered his body. He looked like a mess.

As time went on, the assessment neared its end. But Atlas's opponent hadn't yet been announced, leaving everyone wondering what Zephyr had planned.

"Atlas! To the center of the field!"

Atlas froze for a second, then quickly understood. His battles caused too much destruction—none of the regular platforms could contain him.

As for who his opponent would be, Atlas had a few guesses. Under the gaze of the entire field, Atlas calmly walked to the center.

Standing opposite him was Instructor Shuzo—shirtless this time, clearly not wanting to ruin another uniform.

Atlas stared at Juzuo, eyes blazing with excitement. After nearly a year of sparring together, he'd never truly defeated him. But today... Things might change.

"This kid's gotten strong enough to make Shuzo fight him directly?" Sengoku was surprised.

Between his busy duties and trusting Zephyr's guidance, he hadn't paid close attention to Atlas.

"Don't worry, Juzuo might not even win," Zephyr said cheerfully. After all, there was nothing quite as satisfying as showing off your star student in front of an old friend.

Soru!

Both Atlas and Juzuo charged in with Soru, going straight for close combat. Atlas didn't try to use swordplay from a distance.

"Iron Body Fist: Break!"

A flurry of punches flew at Juzuo. Calmly, Juzuo's eyes flashed red—Observation Haki locked on.

"Paper Art: Sludge!"

His body slipped like liquid between Atlas's rapid punches. Seeing this, Atlas stopped wasting energy and stepped back, forming guns with his hands.

"Flying Finger Gun: Gatling!"

Vacuum bullets fired in a stream, ripping through the air with explosive force.

"Iron Body: Steel! Armament!"

Shuzo's pupils contracted. Blood surged through his body as Armament Haki covered him from head to toe.

The bullets clashed against his hardened skin, sending sparks flying and forcing him to retreat under the overwhelming pressure.

Juzuo had no choice. Zephyr had once said it was foolish to cover the whole body with Haki—after all, one's Haki reserves were limited.

Spreading it too thin weakened defense and drained stamina rapidly.

But Atlas's Gatling Finger Gun was too fierce. Shuzo had to defend heavily or risk being overwhelmed.

"Tempest Kick: Chaos!

"Soru!"

Refusing to remain passive, Juzuo unleashed a chaotic wave of vacuum slashes, closing in on Atlas with Soru.

"Perfect! Hahaha!"

Atlas laughed wildly, tanking the attack with Iron Body. Deep gashes appeared all over him, but they quickly faded into faint scars.

"...What?"

Sengoku was visibly shaken. Though he'd read about Atlas's monstrous healing in reports, seeing it in person was another thing entirely.

But Juzuo didn't flinch. He had seen this many times before. He quickly closed the distance again, aiming to strike while Atlas was recovering.

"Life Return: Iron Body—Martial God Arm!"

Atlas didn't dodge. Instead, his right arm suddenly swelled, bursting through his sleeve. The dark, metallic limb smashed into Shuzo's incoming blow.

This was the result of Atlas's training with Life Return. He had learned to pour his will into one arm—even if the technique wasn't yet complete, it was impressive progress.

The sheer force caught Shuzo off guard. Despite being coated in Armament Haki, he was launched backward by the punch.

"Good kid! You surprised me—Hahaha!" Zephyr roared with pride. Sengoku was speechless. Atlas had exceeded expectations by a long shot.

"The strongest justice, huh..." Sengoku muttered in awe. Maybe... just maybe, this kid could pull it off.

Marine Headquarters, Marineford Training Grounds

"Such terrifying power..." Juzuo slowly picked himself up, his expression complicated.

He'd lost count of how many times he'd said that after fighting Atlas. Every time, he was overwhelmed by the latter's raw strength.

"I lost… Congratulations, Atlas." Though a bit dejected, Juzuo still smiled with pride.

"Thank you for going easy, Instructor Shuzo!" Atlas replied humbly.

Without Shuzo's sparring, he wouldn't have improved so rapidly. There was no need to boast—this wasn't a fight to the death.

Understanding each other's strengths was enough.

.....

March, Year 1506 of the Sea Calendar — Marineford Training Grounds

A tall, determined-looking young man stood in the center of the field, nearly 2.8 meters in height.

His muscles were perfectly sculpted and gave the impression of a living suit of battle armor—intimidating and awe-inspiring.

Facing him was a dark-skinned, burly man with arms coated in glossy black Armament Haki. He was relentlessly pounding away at the young man in front of him.

These two were none other than Atlas and Shuzo.

Following Zephyr's suggestion, Atlas had shamelessly volunteered to be Juzuo's human punching bag.

Feeling the clash of Armament Haki and flesh, Atlas could sense his understanding of Haki deepening. He knew—just one more step, and his Haki would awaken fully.

"Alright, today's real-combat session is about to begin. Let's stop here." Juzuo retracted his Haki and addressed the smiling Atlas.

The second year of Marine boot camp focused on actual combat. The first year was for foundational training—sending recruits into battle too early would be suicide.

But coddling them too much would leave them unprepared. So in year two, the horrors of war became a regular lesson.

In the canon timeline, Zephyr lost his arm during one such mission, when he led Ain and Binz into the field and was ambushed by Whitebeard Jr. and Miss Bakkin.

Already weakened by asthma, he sacrificed himself to protect the cadets.

"Kehahaha... boys, we're almost at Sabaody Archipelago!"

A heavily scarred pirate with an open vest and a spiked mace stood on the bow of the ship, laughing wildly.

"OHHH! OHHHHH!"

"We're coming for you, New World!"

"Captain, let's dethrone Whitebeard first—Hahahaha!"

"Of course! Our captain is a Super Rookie with a 90 million bounty!"

The whole crew laughed heartily, believing their captain would one day become Pirate King.

....

Marine Headquarters, Marineford Dock

Rows of stern-looking Marine soldiers stood at attention. At the front was Zephyr, head instructor of the Marine boot camp.

"Recruits! Justice must be forged in blood! Today, I will personally lead you into your first real combat training mission of the year. This is no drill—this is the real battlefield!"

Zephyr scanned each face before continuing.

"Our target is the Mad Dog Pirates. Their captain, Dias, is a Super Rookie with a 90 million bounty. First mate Karlos is worth 55 million, second mate Buhara is at 50 million, and the rest vary. That's all the intel I can give you."

Under Zephyr's lead, the recruits set sail toward Sabaody.

"Zephyr-sensei, are we going to Sabaody Archipelago?" Atlas leaned against the railing, grinning.

"That's right. According to intel, the Mad Dog crew plans to get their ship coated at Sabaody and head for Fish-Man Island—straight to the New World. Classic pirate behavior," Zephyr chuckled.

"Any other details on them, sensei? Hahaha..." Atlas asked with interest.
