Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Great Gift from the Sign-In

After becoming familiar with the system, Rikuya Kazama finally stood up and took a look at his surroundings.

He found himself locked in a cell made of iron walls on three sides, with the fourth side made of thick metal bars.

Even though this was only Level One, the Crimson Hell, the air was saturated with a heavy stench of blood.

From the memories he had just received, Rikuya already knew what was coming—a life-and-death battle awaited him soon.

Ever since Roger's execution, pirates all over the world had gone mad because of his final words. Countless pirates flooded into the seas, chasing dreams of treasure and freedom.

As a result, more and more prisoners were being thrown into Impel Down.

Due to its unique location, there was only one Impel Down in the entire world. Expansion wasn't an option. As the number of criminals increased, the prison quickly became overcrowded.

While Magellan and the prison's higher-ups were troubled over what to do, the sadistic chief warden Sadie, who enjoyed hearing others scream in pain, came up with a plan.

Her suggestion was to let the prisoners kill each other.

According to her proposal, each floor's inmates would be forced into regular death battles. Everyone would be assigned a number, and each day, two numbers would be randomly selected for a match.

The rule was simple—only by killing your opponent could you survive.

But it didn't end there. If you wanted to live, you had to keep fighting. Even after winning, you might be chosen again the next day.

This system was, in theory, designed to drastically reduce the prison population. After some discussion, Magellan reluctantly agreed to Sadie's proposal.

After all, most of the prisoners locked in Impel Down were irredeemable criminals. Magellan had no sympathy for their lives or deaths.

However, he imposed one condition: prisoners from Level Six were strictly forbidden from being selected.

Clearly, even Magellan feared those locked in the deepest level.

Impel Down consisted of six levels in total.

The sixth floor was the dreaded Eternal Hell. It held monsters and pirates so dangerous they were erased from history.

These were criminals sentenced either to death or life imprisonment, infamous figures whose crimes were so heinous the government had hidden the truth from the public. Even newspapers were forbidden from reporting about them.

It was from this floor that the legendary Golden Lion Shiki once made his escape.

And according to later events in the anime, even the monstrous crew members of Blackbeard's pirate crew were imprisoned here.

The former head jailer of Impel Down, Shiryu of the Rain, was also locked away on this floor.

Naturally, Magellan would never dare to unleash those monsters and let them participate in any fights.

Once he gave the go-ahead, Sadie and the other officers of Impel Down immediately began organizing these brutal death matches.

Today, the unlucky number drawn was Rikuya's—Number 55.

To make each match more entertaining, the wardens would allow both selected prisoners to enjoy a full meal before the fight, so they could perform at their best.

Looking down at the so-called "execution meal" placed on the floor, Rikuya scoffed, "I'd rather starve than eat this garbage."

About ten minutes later, the same warden returned to his cell.

"Hey, you done eating yet? You've got thirty minutes. Hurry up!"

"Just about!" Rikuya replied, shoving a chunk of meat into his mouth.

Half an hour passed in a flash, and Rikuya had finished his meal.

After all, it was a bad idea to fight on an empty stomach.

Right on time, two wardens arrived, opened the cell door, and pulled Rikuya out, his wrists and ankles shackled with thick chains.

As he walked down the narrow, cold stone corridor, the chains around his ankles dragged against the floor with a chilling, clinking sound.

The sound echoed eerily.

On both sides of the path were rows of prison cells. Inside, countless inmates pressed up against the bars, watching with twisted glee as today's "lucky one" was taken away.

"Oho, bro, you're dead meat. Your opponent's Number 38, the guy who's already killed five in a row!"

One prisoner popped his head out of a nearby cell and shouted with excitement.

"Shut up! Keep talking and you'll be sent in his place!" the warden snapped fiercely.

The noisy inmate immediately backed off, but the way he looked at Rikuya was as if he were already a corpse.

It was clear—everyone expected Rikuya to die.

Soon after, Rikuya was led to a circular arena set up in the center of Level One.

Around the edges of the arena stood dozens of guards, all eagerly watching as spectators of the upcoming bloodbath.

Seated in the viewing area above the arena were a few notable figures.

A short, stubby man with a trident and two horns on his hat stared directly at Rikuya.

The moment he saw him, Rikuya immediately recognized the man—it was Saldeath, the Chief Warden of Impel Down.

Saldeath was also the commander of the Blue Gorillas, the beasts in charge of guarding the Crimson Hell.

Standing on the arena stage was already another figure.

Though wearing prisoner's clothes, the man's massive frame and deep facial scar made him look absolutely terrifying.

The moment his eyes met Rikuya's, a surge of killing intent radiated from him.

"No wonder he killed five already... This guy's killing intent is intense," Rikuya muttered under his breath.

"Get in there!" the warden behind him gave him a hard shove forward.
