One Piece: Start by Saving Roger, I Was Invited to Join the Crew

Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Contact Garp

Ten days later.

In a room, Roger, Whitebeard, Marco, Rayleigh, Jabba, and Reid—six people—sat together discussing the upcoming journey to Wano Country.

Reid had just revealed his medical abilities to Whitebeard and Marco.

Rayleigh and Jabba both grinned. They had known for a while—after all, how else could Roger's illness have been cured?

"Reid, I didn't expect your medical skills to be this incredible. This is the first I've heard of it," Marco said, looking at Reid with newfound respect and inward shock.

Whitebeard was also amazed. "Truly impressive. With Reid around, we never have to worry about our family's health."

He glanced at Roger, feeling somewhat envious. He had always focused on protecting his crew, and with someone like Reid around, injuries and illnesses wouldn't be a concern anymore.

"Hahaha, Whitebeard, don't even think about stealing Reid from me," Roger said smugly, raising an eyebrow.

"Hmph, I'm not like you," Whitebeard shot back with a cold snort and glare.

"Whitebeard, let Brother Reid give you a treatment," Roger grinned. Part of this meeting was indeed to let Reid treat Whitebeard's condition.

"Just stretch out one hand," Reid said.

He originally intended to call him "Big Brother Whitebeard," but realized that would undermine his own presence—especially since Whitebeard was technically on the opposing side. So he addressed him plainly.

Whitebeard exchanged a glance with Marco before extending a hand.

Reid placed his hand on Whitebeard's for just a moment before smiling, "Alright, Whitebeard. Try feeling it."

"That's it?" Marco said in shock, noticing Reid had barely touched him.

Whitebeard, too, was stunned. He clenched his fist and suddenly stood up in excitement.

"I really can feel it—my body's free of its burden. I feel so light."

"Whitebeard, you're a Tremor-Tremor Fruit user. I'd recommend not using that power unless absolutely necessary. Everything in this world has a price."

Everyone present was startled. They hadn't expected Reid to say something so profound.

"A price for everything, huh? I've learned that lesson today. Gurararara!" Whitebeard laughed heartily.

"Reid, what you said makes sense. But our old man's condition wasn't caused by his Devil Fruit. He just doesn't take care of himself. He gives all the good stuff to us instead," Marco said, resting his chin in his hand with a mixture of guilt and gratitude.

Reid paused, deep in thought.

"So maybe Whitebeard's illness wasn't due to the Tremor-Tremor Fruit… maybe Marco's right. Whitebeard lived to 72. If it weren't for the Marineford War, he probably could've lived a few more years."

Although he was still unsure, Reid didn't argue. Whether it was caused by the fruit or not no longer mattered.

Roger, now serious, spoke up.

"Whitebeard, Marco—everyone here now knows that Reid is a doctor, but no one else knows just how astonishing his skills are. You must not tell anyone else—not even your own crewmates."

Roger didn't mention that his own crew already knew. He just didn't want Teach to find out. Though he could easily kill Teach, Whitebeard would never allow it without cause.

"Don't worry. We won't say anything," Whitebeard nodded.

"I understand how serious this is. You can count on me," Marco replied solemnly.

"Hahaha, great. Then let's set a time to head to Wano," Roger said as he poured himself a drink and downed it.

"Once your wife and child are settled, we'll leave immediately," Whitebeard said, raising his own cup.

Roger's smile faded, and his expression turned deep and serious.

The next day, Reid found Roger.

"Reid, that girl you mentioned—Nico Robin—you're saying she'll be a companion of Joy Boy in the future?"

Roger was so shocked that he nearly lost his balance, his expression wildly exaggerated.

"You don't need to be so dramatic. You're the Pirate King, after all," Reid said, a bit speechless, and then nodded.

"Yes, I just remembered that it's already the year 1500 in the Sea Calendar. Since I'm aware of this now, I was thinking—shouldn't we try to help her? Oden's life won't be in danger for another two years."

Roger didn't respond immediately. He thought for a moment, then looked at Reid with a grin.

"Hehe, Reid, Joy Boy's companions must all go through trials. If life is too smooth, do you think it'll truly benefit them in the long run?"

"Well…" Reid fell silent. Roger did have a point.

"Hahahaha!" Roger laughed, arms akimbo, his muscles rippling with laughter.

"Roger's right. If I interfere now, I might change the future. What if Robin doesn't end up joining Luffy's crew? Who would read the Poneglyphs then?"

Roger saw Reid deep in thought and didn't interrupt him.

"No… no, I am the Child of Destiny. Since I came to the world of pirates, I must do something meaningful. If it weren't for me, Roger and Rouge would already be dead. Now that I've remembered Robin, I should go and help her. As for the others, if I don't remember, so be it—their fate lies in their own hands."

With that thought, Reid looked at Roger with a serious expression.

"Brother Roger, I have to go," Reid said, sharing his thoughts with Roger.

After hearing him out, Roger's expression turned serious. He thought it over for a moment, then nodded and said, "Hmm, Reid, you've considered this thoroughly. That's definitely a possibility. Since you've made up your mind to go, then go."

Roger grinned as he looked at Reid.

"Hey, what are you two whispering about so sneakily?" Rayleigh walked over.

"Ah~ Rayleigh, you came at the right time. Reid wants to go to the West Blue," Roger said, explaining Reid's plan to Rayleigh.

"Oh? Then let's go. We can stop by Wano on the way," Rayleigh grinned.

"On the way?" Reid looked confused.

"You didn't know? Wano Country is in the New World, which is the second half of the Grand Line. The New World is roughly located between the North Blue and the West Blue."

Rayleigh looked surprised—how could Reid not know this?

"Ah... so that's how it is. Then it really is on the way," Reid scratched his head awkwardly.

"Oh right, we're currently in the South Blue. To get to the West Blue—"

"Hahaha, it's simple—just head there directly! Or grab a few Sea Kings and have them drag us along. We're not just some run-of-the-mill pirates," Roger laughed, clearly thinking Reid was overthinking it.

"There's no place in this world we can't reach. Heck, we could even swim there if we had to," Rayleigh added with a grin.

"Swim...?" Reid rubbed his ears, wondering if he had misheard.

"Hahaha, Reid, you probably don't know—Rayleigh does this kind of stuff all the time to stay in shape. Sometimes he'll even take out a few Sea Kings while he's at it."

Damn! Reid thought to himself. That actually sounds familiar... I think I've seen something like this before. Where was it again?

"Before we leave, I need to arrange things for Rouge and Ace. This island has been exposed. The World Government won't let my family live here peacefully forever," Roger said.

"What's your plan, Roger?" Rayleigh asked.

Roger looked off into the distance. "I've had something in mind for a while now. I said it once before, back when I was in prison. Worst case, I'll just say it again."

"What?! Wait… could it be Garp?" Reid suddenly understood.

"So it's him. Are you sure about that?"

"Yeah, compared to everyone else, I still trust that stubborn guy."

"I see. Do you want me to come with you, Roger?" Rayleigh offered seriously. After all, Garp was technically on the other side.

"No, that might draw attention. If we both go, Navy spies are bound to notice. I'll land on an island near Navy HQ and go find him alone."

"Wait, Roger—why not just call Garp with a Den Den Mushi?" Reid asked.

"Haha, so you've thought of that, huh? Unfortunately, no. That area's crawling with surveillance Den Den Mushi. We can't risk it."

Reid nodded. Now that he thought about it, he remembered those black surveillance Den Den Mushi too.
